In the US, I know that if I go to a see a specialist for a checkup/procedure, I'm billed by the physician in question, the hospital it took place in, and any department whose services we used (x-ray, urinalysis, anesthesiologist, whatever) separately, with different bills from the different companies/organizations. Is the same true of going to see my general practitioner for a simple checkup? Or will the practice just bill me all at once? Thing is I just got this bill from my GP's practice center for a few of the visits I've had in the last couple months and I'm just...not...used to seeing bills this small. I'm wondering if I've got more coming for me from other places? Anyone familiar?

If all you did was go in for a check-up, or get a new script, then yeah, that's probably all you'll get billed for. But if you had blood drawn or anything like that, in theory you should be getting a bill from the lab. But it all depends on your insurance. Some just have a flat fee of $X for seeing your primary care physician, and it could include basic lab work, too. If you're in doubt, just call your GP and/or insurance provider and ask them.

It's just a bunch of chatrooms. IRC consists of networks like Rizon, Undernet, EFnet, freenode, etc. Each network has servers. You connect to a server to join a particular network. Once you're on the network, you can join any channel (chatroom) in the network. Channel names are always prefixed with a hash, like so: #gooniestgoonroom. Channels are unique to networks. Just because a channel exists on Rizon doesn't mean it exists on any other network, and vice versa. Common channel names (#help, etc.) are often on every single network, but will have completely different people because of this. If you want to join a channel, you need to know what network it's on and what the channel name is. Use something like xchat or mIRC.

I have two unrelated questions: 1) Is there a twitter program or web app I can use that stores my feeds until I've read them (and as a bonus, has cloud synching)? Basically what I do now is have my twitter feed open, but when I'm out or turn off the computer, the tweets I've missed I have to manually go back to them or just miss them. 2) Is there an artist that creates music like Girl Talk that's good for upbeat party background music or any artist/group that's just generally awesome like Girl Talk?

It doesn't look like it at the moment. Find a buddy with HBO and see if they will start having GOT parties every week?

I honestly don't see how that would be different than pirating, unless you have some technical issues with that. I mean financially for the entities involved, there would be no difference if you can't wait for the iTunes release and unless you're allowed to share your HBO password?
|
# ? Apr 9, 2012 02:42 |

It's different from piracy in the sense that it's not illegal. If mods disagree I'll glady edit that out, but it's certainly the easiest way to watch HBO without paying for it.

No, it's nothing you said. What I was saying is that if his buddy gives him his HBO password, then he's watching HBO without paying for it. And if he pirates an episode, then he's watching HBO without paying for it. It's really just a frustrating distinction that I was commenting on. The end result is the same (unless HBO allows some password sharing, but I doubt it). vvvvvvv Yeah of course no company would ever tell you not to watch socially unless they want to commit PR suicide. I think it's more enjoyable to watch in groups for sure. Dudebro fucked around with this message at 03:25 on Apr 9, 2012 |

Same thing would apply if someone watched it at a friends house. I see where you are coming from though. I think years of lawsuits and weird gray area involving piracy have conditioned us to thinking we are doing something wrong if we enjoy any form of entertainment without shoving quarters into some corporations mouth. I actually watched GOT at my brothers house last week since he has HBO, and for a split second my brain actually thought "wait, am I allowed to do this?" Either way I am gonna edit my original post because I don't want to seem like I am promoting :files: veni veni veni fucked around with this message at 03:14 on Apr 9, 2012 |

How do you (in your head) convert betting odds into percentages? Will it always add up to 100, or are there exceptions? I'm mean like British sports betting odds, like on William Hill etc. 13/10 9/4 15/8 Can it be done quickly in your head?

Elphiem posted:How do you (in your head) convert betting odds into percentages? Will it always add up to 100, or are there exceptions? Oh man, this is way too complicated to explain here, but odds are never based on actual percentages. They represent a distribution of the betting pool based on who is betting on what competitor after the track takes out their 25% commission. Google "Parimutuel betting" and wade through all the "INSIDER GAMBLING HELP!" crap, or Here's a site that explains (at least horse racing odds) better than I ever could even though it's trying to sell you handicapping. The only difference is that it uses the decimal system, which is easier to understand the ratio. The British system is different, the slash means that, for example in your first odd, if you bet $13 you would get $10 for a total of $23. You can adjust that fractionally to suit your bet. Long story short though, there's no way to work it out percentage-wise unless you're actually trying to figure out what percentage of the pot is being bet on which horse, which is essentially what the odds are doing for you anyway. edit: substitute "horse" for "sports" anywhere in my post and the information is pretty much still the same, except the vig on sports betting is a lot smaller. haveblue posted:Speaking of which, is there any way at all to watch GoT season 2 that isn't subscribing to HBO or pirating it? Season 1 is on iTunes but it doesn't look like 2 will be there anytime soon. It's probably been around the internet so much that it's become a cliche, but it's so very very true: http://www.virtualshackles.com/207 Functionally, there is zero difference between watching it with your friend on his HBO and you downloading the ep and watching it yourself. It was paid for once, and two people are watching it. Since the function is completely the same, I don't see why the morality probably isn't the same either. So the question is, do you care about the illegality? Or, more to point, are you afraid that your IP will be seen on a public tracker and you'll receive a cease and desist from your ISP? These are the concerns. Not morality, not legality, but simply, can you get away with it. If you obsess over the morality and legality then that's your choice, but I think I demonstrated they're ultimately irrelevant. Note that the same argument could be made for pirating games - why buy a used game when I could pirate it? The developers get the same amount of money either way. And if you say I'm robbing Gamestop of a sale, that logic is out, because if I buy a used game at Gamestop, I'm robbing Best Buy or Amazon of a new-game sale. So, to answer your question: Famously, no, the only way to watch recent GoT episodes is either illegally or through an HBO account. Period. They don't seem interested in selling it to anyone else yet.

I'm well aware of all of that, I watched season 1 on borrowed blu-rays, which changed my willingness to pay for the content, which led to that question. It's not "obsessing" until I make a long, detailed, multi-paragraph missive about the moral and legal implications of my stance, much like all the posts that weren't mine.
