Commander Keene posted:Yeah, it's kinda like the difference between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess; WW had a very emotive Link which was great, especially with the art style in that game, while TP's Link was very stone-faced. Here we have DQ8's Hero, who was expressive (maybe not to the level of WW Link though), while the Luminary is very stone-faced. It's a shame, because Rab's voice actor really sells the scene.

DWM was my first too. For some reason, the tree stump monster sticks out the most in my memories. Maybe because I was playing that while shopping for a desk at Wal Mart in the year 2000. I don't think I'd play another one until IX. I really wanted to play VIII when it came out, but I never owned a PS2. IX was brilliant and I was hooked. I got IV not too long after and then eventually got more or less the rest of them in one form or another. Minus X, anyway. (I don't like it when MMOs get mainline numbered entries. They should have called it Dragon Quest Online or something.) Here's an amazing reaction gifable moment. Somewhat spoiler if you haven't made it into act 2. https://twitter.com/Tomenheimer/status/1179969545928204289?s=19

Replaying XI is just making me want to play through the whole numbered series again. What was X like? It's pretty clear it's never going to come out in English and I don't know enough Japanese to ever justify buying it, but was it one of those really grindy MMOs or was it fairly approachable for casual players. How was the story, if anyone in here has played it?

I played like an hour of it but I can't really remember the finer details. I had a weddie martial artist and she was cute though.

I did it comfortably at 19 at (maybe 20), but I also had gotten the 1-handed sword from the casino and had forged the best armor I could at that point.

Dizz posted:What level should I be during the martial arts tournament because I'm just getting crapped on I think most agree that 20-21 is a good point. If you have Hard Monsters on you might want to go sword and shield, a few fights are gonna come down to waiting for one person to run out of MP and the extra defence helps

Greatsword guard can help quite a bit if you're using one, though sword and shield still might be better in those fights.

I managed to do it at level 18 and was 19-20 when fighting the spider. Cutting Edge with 2x Oomph and sapped enemies was good. Also acceleratle and decelerate helps a lot as well. I'm considering swapping Erik for Veronica

I wonder what crazy stuff they're gonna do for XII. Aside from hopefully making Definitive Edition features standard going forward. Summons? Combo attacks? NPC assists? A female hero?

XI was actually the first game in a while where you had to play as a Male Hero. Also I was kind of bummed we didn't get the female IV Hero in Smash, I think she's got a better design then the male one. But then again I am kind of a sucker for that 80's anime "flouff" hair

Female Hero in 4 is the only legit choice imo, that anime afro owns and the male MC looks like a douche and stock DBZ character (yeah I know that’s kinda a series thing for most of them but it’s even worse with him).

And on the flip side, I prefer the Male Hero's design. I usually play as Sofia anyway, though, because of course a lot of the best armor is female only.

The only problem with playing a girl in III NES is that most(?) of the dialogue still used male pronouns.

In what translation? If it's on the original NES that really won't surprise me. It obviously wouldn't be an issue in the original Japanese.

I also had a question about the metal slime family. Will they be easier to find? I managed to only find one in the Ogre fights, which kinda sucked because Ogre hurts like gently caress while you're trying to focus down a slime before it runs away.

I've made it decently far in the game and I haven't seen any Metal Slimes(not counting Metal Slime knights and the like) on any map yet. They've always just been along for the ride in other fights. That might change even later in the game/the end game, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Nah, they figured out how horribly exploitable onscreen encounters are combined with metal slimes after Dragon Quest VII and made it so they only ever accompany other monsters. There IS an exploit to farm them in the postgame you can google tho.

There is actually one place in the game where you'll see metal slimes on the map. It's during the dragon chase in the first chapter
