Them getting to whine about Big Hollywood oppressing their box office totals and then also getting to blame poor BO performance (that they will recoup in bulk video sales to mega churches 100x over) is a marketing angle as well as adding to that weird persecution fetish they all have. "Buy the video Hollywood didn't want you to see!"

Major release christian films have enjoyed fairly decent success in recent years. I was watching some youtube docs gawking at bad christian movies and I came across one that was an actual Christian arguing that they're not only bad from a religious perspective (he gets into a little about the production side as well: basically preachers aren't screenwriters) but also that they're just bad movies. I thought it was an interesting perspective.

So elections are coming up in Houston, apparently. What would be resources I could use to find out what's on the ballot? Would the League of Women's Voters have anything? Is there any DSA resource that would help me know how to vote?

The muni elections are in November and the fields are still not set. I'll do an effort post at some point regarding the various candidates. The official endorsements won't come until the fall and DSA doesn't (or hasn't, in the past) endorse half-baked candidates (e.g, wont endorse the lib who refuses to identify as or with DSA).

The big issue at the moment is the firefighters prop which has created strange bedfellows (e.g., Houston DSA alongside Tony Buzbee, a Trump bundler and Rick Perry's lawyer).

It is already out of sight and out of mind, though it did pop up this week because the DA dismissed a few dozen charges on people arrested by the involved cops.

Literally the only local politics story getting any real and long term coverage is firefighter pay raises.

I thought HPD was going to be fined or have some sort of procedural change over no-knock raids as a result of that? Did that end up not happening?

And what's the deal with the firefighter pay raises thing? It's a vote to raise firefighter pay raises to the same level as police, right?

Just listened to the tribcast episode from last week and realized the senate still hasn’t even passed a school finance bill yet

zoux
Apr 28, 2006

They're supposed to pass it out of committee this week, it's not that far off of the House's proposal so, if they can get it off the floor, conference should be pretty easy. House hasn't done the property tax cap either, I think each chamber is kind of marching forward holding their important bill at gunpoint ready to execute it if the other chamber kills the bill.

Also Seliger and Watson did some tribune thing a couple of weeks ago, and Seliger said something about the reason Patrick was wiling to go nuclear over SB 2 was because Abbott was saying that he won't call a special if they don't get ed finance/prop taxes done so

poo poo, isn't that the one with the lower teacher raises?

zoux
Apr 28, 2006

AFAIK it still has the $5k raises in there, the House is the lower one, $1600 I think? The Senate includes a merit pay provision modeled after the DISD system, and merit pay is one of the teachers' unions/trade groups major objections.

Anyway if it passes it'll be somewhere between the two.

It's elections for bonds (no City of Houston or HISD bonds though) and smaller municipalities in the area (e.g., West U, Bellaire, Humble, Pasadena, South Houston etc...)

quote:

And what's the deal with the firefighter pay raises thing? It's a vote to raise firefighter pay raises to the same level as police, right?

There is a lot to be said about it, but the crux of the issue is after the Mayor got the state leg to cut firefighter pensions in the 2017 legislature, firefighters wanted a raise. Negotiations with the Mayor broke down and they got a petition on the ballot to grant pay equity with police officers (police officers have taken pension cuts for pay raises for more than a decade, while fire chose the opposite). This would be a 25-30% raise. Houston also has a revenue cap where revenues can't increase more than 2.5% a year (or in relation to population growth if larger) which makes large scale expenditures hard. The Firefighters did not include an exception to the revenue cap on their petition, so they have to find a way to pay for it out of existing funds.

Throughout the process, the Mayor said if it passes, there would have to be layoffs without a phase-in process. It passed 60/40 and now the Mayor said ok, but there will be layoffs to pay for it unless you do a 5 year phase in (400 layoffs for immediate phase in). The firefighters are now complaining that there will be layoffs because they want immediate or no more than 3 year phase-in.

It's a stupid fight and the Firefighters are in the wrong. I voted for the prop to increase their salaries because they wanted a pay raise, and seemingly understood the context surrounding how it could be paid for within the statutory budget constraints.

While she's better than the last guy, she's still basically just a Republican.

This was her like hours before that - at a small business round table with BP and ConocoPhillips, noted small businesses. She also wrote an op-ed for the Friday Chronicle trying to walk back the Green New Deal, saying it's too heavy handed with government regulation.

It would make <1 oz of Marijuana a class C offense (punishable by up to a $500 fine only [no jail]), mandates deferred adjudication for that offense if no other weed charge in the prior 12 months, provides for early expunction of Class C weed charges, bars officers for arresting someone if the only ground is possession of <1 oz of marijuana or possession of drug paraphernalia (unlike virtually all other Class C or traffic citations), and eliminates some collateral consequences like the 6 month DL suspension that occurs for any other type of drug offense.

Someone posted about it yesterday I think. The firefighters put up a proposition to give themselves a raise but didn’t include a funding mechanism and also won’t allow it to be phased in. Also Houston has a revenue cap. So either you fire them or fire other city workers because the City is now legally required to pay for it.
