Kaka didn't though? The card for #7 is fine, the card for Kaka for messing around with his friend is stupid and a bad refereeing decision. To be fair this isn't anything wrong with VAR, it just makes the refs decision that much worse because it's painfully obvious that they're just playing around.

A system that puts even more decisions into the hands of MLS refs is a bad idea

Any concacaf refs really, but other leagues are too lovely to apply it reliably.

This decision without VAR would have been bad but understandable, with VAR it's beyond bad.

Oh, apparently I didn't watch the video long enough to see that :downs:

VAR shouldn't be used for subjective calls, except maybe fouls in the box on goal scoring opportunities. When you slow the speed down and flatten to 2 dimensions it's hard to tell the impact. At the very least the criteria for subjective calls should be shaded towards the extremely obvious.

It works in rugby so why can't it work on football too?

Rugby already stops play (and the clock) all the time, and afaik still only uses VAR for tries, when it's pretty important whether a team scored or not and play is stopped anyway. Football is a much more free-flowing game where a foul not being called can lead to a goal being scored within seconds, or play not stopping after that call for several minutes. At what point do we let refs stop the game in the middle of a play to review video and see if something was a foul or not?

I've had the same argument against VAR the entire time it's been discussed:

At what point do you draw the line? If there's an offside fine. But what if, 5/10/30 seconds before that there's a foul in the box? Or a red card? Or down the other end of the pitch there was a foul the other way. Football isn't a game of possession (like rugby or NFL). There's no "passage of play" that you can use the VAR for. Until Fifa make a decision about what can and can't be reviewed, VAR will not work in football.

this argument would have more merit if players didn't crowd the referee after contentious decisions

Rugby uses it for dangerous play/violent conduct too and usually retrospectively go back to those incidents after the current passage of play is over.
