Would be cool if you could pick what upgrade you want. Full flightdeck, half flightdeck, no upgrade, ALL THE AAA upgrade.

Japanese AAA was quite bad, and I'm not talking about the lack of proximity fuses and such, like the guns themselves were poor at tracking, reload speed, etc.

Desperate for something interesting, I go for a play in Milne Bay. Manus is the target for massed strikes today. For you, the war is over. My god, action somewhere that isn't the DEI! It's an invasion! Let's hope it a little more competent than the last one! We have another good day in Burma. An actual, honest to god invasion! It's more New Zealanders....... To be fair – they have a chance here, I've not been able to get supplies down here in months. I do love the constant stream of ships sunk during failed invasions of Truk.

I think the Allied AI in this game has something personal against the New-Zealanders. In my own game they keep launching them into suicide invasions too, and it is somehow even more pointless than in the Greyverse: about 4/5 amphibious TF gets hits by my land-based planes, and after taking severe losses they...turn back. Making the losses in shipping and personel pointless.

They kinda support their invasion of Luganville. There is a carrier near Guam, but I've upgraded the fighters there since their last attack. Down comes a Liberator. They've been cut off at Truk for months, and I outnumber them. But they are all tanks, and there for I am powerless to destroy them. A good day, apart from the combat system being the combat system – but I thought it was worth a go after all these months. a couple of claims today.

This might be entirely stupid, but can you knock out tanks with naval gunfire? If so then perhaps just put a wee force in Truk and have it hit them every day until their vehicle numbers are sufficiently whittled down?

Or I guess try to maximize their disruption with continuous daily bombardment attacks? They have no disruption(-) indicator right now. And I guess they're smelting tank shells on the beach using seashells and black sand, since they have no supplies.

Still wow on that air combat. Like.. 16 kills? And no losses? That's some nice flying. Also ow on Truk. Like, is there any reason you just can't ignore them? Have your dive bombers harrass them each day for expeirence, occasionally rotate a ship in to bombard them - since apparently it's completley impossible to attack them, is ther eany reason you just can't ignore they exist and use them to pick off supply ships?

I have not looked it up but I'm gonna take a wild guess and say: they're each different solutions of the overall compromise between top speed, max altitude, max range, armor/survivability, carrier capability, and firepower.

Engines produced by the factories and role (in theory). Really for coverage you'd want carrier-capable fighters, interceptors, long-range escort fighters, heavy/night fighters, ground attack and maybe some general purpose.

A lot of late war Japanese planes get really bad service ratings, which means they can’t fly every day, some only every few days. Generally they tend to be less well armed than allied planes, and less armored as well. The best late war planes that are typically researched are the Ki-84R Frank, the Ki-83 Heavy Fighter, and the A7M2 Sam. Because of the fun interservice rivalry thing some planes only go for Army air groups, some for Naval, so the Sam is the best navy fighter and the Frank/George are army planes. Japan even gets a few night fighters, some of whom even get radar. I’ve mentioned this earlier but one of the biggest gently caress you’s in the research system is you advance plane and engine research but can’t control radar systems, so you could advance the Randy night fighter by a year (spending a ton of supplies to do so) and be unable to use it with radar until mid 1945 anyway.

The 'Poor showing' during the initial Kokoda campaign was determined to be a lack of a will to fight by the Australians and there after all the lovely jobs went to the ANZAC forces with all the 'glory' going to the US forces. It was so endemically lodged in the HQ mindset that it contributed to enormous unnecessary casualties when the ANZAC forces assaulted Buna attempting to regain some reputation as an elite fighting force. That's a great way to handle some of tnhe best light infantry in the theater. loving MacArthur.

Tonys, Franks, and Tojos belong to the Army, while Georges and Zeros are Navy fighters. Georges are better than Zeros, but (unlike the Zero) are not carrier capable, so you need both. Tonys, Franks, and Tojos are varying in performance, but all use different engines. Since engines are a major bottleneck in Japanese production, you get more fighters out of the available engines if you make all three types.

I can't believe I'm defending Imperial Japanese inter-service rivalries, but different planes to accomplish the same mission for Army and Naval aviation were common at the time. The US used generally the F2A, F4F, F6F, and F4U as naval fighters both from carriers and land over the course of the war. (The F4U had great difficulties in carrier landings, and was initially used as land-based naval aviation only) Concurrently in the Pacific, some combination of P-39, P-40, P-47, P-51 were carrying out the same types of missions but for the US Army Air Corps. The few exceptions, where land based aircraft were converted to carrier aircraft (Seafire, Me-109T) were pretty poo poo.

MacArthur is one of those guys where it's hard to decide how to feel about him. He screwed the pooch a lot but he also was right about a lot of stuff. He was notably not racist compared to his contemporaries, so that's a point in his favor, and he didn't like the idea of level bombing cities (because it was stupid, wasteful, and useless) and was gentle with civilians, so that's another. He handled the occupation well. But, he was a shameless self promoter and he constantly tried to end run the president which is a big loving deal. He was audacious and willing to take risks, but those risks got him into trouble when he ran away with himself.

He also wanted to drop nukes on China, violated direct orders from the President, botched the defense of the Phillipines, was called 'Dugout Dug' for a reason by folks who served under him.. The best thing I've read baout him that gives credit is he was very successful with the occupation of Japan, but beyond that some of the things he tried to do in Korea are.. Yeah, MacArthur is still the exemplar par excellence as to why military leaders don't get to make political calls in the US. Also, while he wasn't super racist given the time he happily moved in those circles without much concern. (e.g. his being good buddies with his "pet fascist," Major General Charles Willoughby). And trying to nuke the hell out of China takes away any credit he gets for being gentle to civilians.

Add the routing of the numerically superior Bonus Army to the long list of MacArthur success stories. The man knew how to play the political and perception games better than anyone. The LBJ mission, for example, would be proof of him being politically clever. But then again one may make the arguement the importance of those qualities increase with the stars.Grey Hunter posted:

"Routing the Bonus Army" is code for "using actual military equipment including tanks and gas to 'rout' a bunch of peaceful protesters." It's not like it was a military engagement, he was running over disabled vets camping in a park with tanks. That's one of the shittiest things he did, not a success.
