   someone correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding of this one is that the gram-schmidt process is an algorithm that simplifies calculations involving vectors by producing an orthogonal basis to those vectors. In the case of a Hamiltonian this would be done to simplify the calculations involving the energy of a quantum system, because the set of possible energy measurements in a quantum system is expressed as set of eigenvectors and corresponding eigenvalues.     Cauchy (left) had beef with earlier mathematicians (like Euler on the right) who applied the rules of algebra to areas where they couldn't be shown to be valid, such as with infinite series. Even though it works.
