I...don't comprehend why someone could be mad about more programmers making games about it - the genre is the least saturated one in the world, compared to things like shooters or punchers.

John Walker is the same guy who also wrote how Half-Life "killed" the first-person shooter genre, so I wouldn't put too much faith into his opinion.

Shadows of the Empire is probably worth a few dollars for the first 3 levels (before the on foot sections got terrible) and the last level.

If you're already stuck playing a 2D platformer then it's not like the game being bad is going to qualitatively change your experience that much from if the game was 'good.'

Or maybe I'm just jaded from years of awful gameboy games, IDK. 2D platformers: your 2004 flip phone's built-in suite of shovelware games, the genre.

Pretty much. I still read it and it's been irritating me a lot less than it has in the past. Maybe he's writing less articles, I can't say I really pay attention to who wrote the thing I'm reading most of the time.

Eh, Alec comes off like a something of a sad sap these days and most of the other staff regulars are just kind of "there." Jim Rossignol, Kieron, and Quintin were the writers that really drew me to the site and they've all left, so nowadays I pretty much just use it for news. I do really like their Ridealong series, but that's pretty infrequent.

Kieron writes pretty good comics.

Also, Steamworld Heist was a fun game. Could have used some more variety in equipment beyond the occasional "rare" item being something that isn't really basic, but I finished it before I finished XCom 2, and it was probably about just the right length.

And then 2016 came around with the best year for FPSes in a long time.

Also the biggest draw for CoD has never been the single player but a mix of multiplayer and zombies with many people not even playing the campaign. Battlefield is also an exceptionally pointed counterexample to the "Scripted spectacle events killed the FPS"

Most of the time people link a Walker piece it's in the mold of crotchety contrarianism with poorly-defended theses and fuzzy logic

I didn't. That's why I put quotes around "killed."

What's interesting is that in the comments of that article, people argue that it would be more accurate to call the RTS genre 'dead' than FPS games. I admit, I don't know a whole lot about RTS games, but outside of Total War and Starcraft, I personally can't think of many other RTS games that have come out recently (or at least any that were considered major releases).

There's also this comment from Walker:

John Walker posted:

I don’t think “click-bait” is fair. It’s certainly a title that’s intriguing, as it seems to suggest the opposite of what is usually said of Half-Life, but I think I go to great efforts to argue why the title is accurate in the text.

You can disagree with the premise, of course! But the title isn’t, “You won’t believe how Half-Life ruined my life.”

And then, even ignoring all that, WHAT IS WRONG WITH A TITLE THAT CAUSES PEOPLE TO WANT TO CLICK?!?!!

Ahem.

Hello Steam thread,

I come to you with a cross-forum interest check. I am running a somewhat large game of forum-based Mafia and I need an extra 6 players to fill the remaining spots.

If this sounds like something you would be keen on trying out you may have a look at the setup below!

I promise you will have fun, especially when the :murder: starts!

This is a 'non-standard' Mafia variant, but the mafs community would love to see some fresh faces and I will be running a more traditional style game immediately afterwards.

Come play m'lord.
