I've been making motion graphics for the weather channel for the past 3 weeks, and my third video (launched yesterday) is the Video Of The Day today. I built it using Photoshop and Manga Studio for the drawings, imported the 2D pngs into Blender3D. I tried using After Effects but holy poo poo it takes so long to get an idea of what I'm doing in there. http://www.weather.com/video/sponsored-video/3-secrets-to-beat-mosquitoes-52077?collid=/news/video-of-the-day

Alrighty! With a little help from Travakian, I've created a script for the circles thing. And I've updated it loads, so there's a whole mess of options and parameters to play with. Check it out at https://www.othercubed.com/store/circles , and again if you just want to see the new little promo video I've made it's here: https://vimeo.com/105895957 Just put it up last night and it's somehow gotten pretty popular on VK (which is apparently a russian social network), so it'd be cool to see it shared around a bit in a language I can understand! Whoops, yeah thanks for fixing the link! I'll amend it. If anyone makes anything cool with it I'd love to see, think it'd be cool to make a little trailer of other people's stuff. It's getting a lot more downloads than I expected in the first 24 hours, if anyone knows any cool blogs or whatever that might be good to send it to let me know!

I just went through this thread out of curiousity and I'm blown away by the cleverness, skill, and creativity of this work. Definitely want to get into this sort of thing, although the closest I've come is Camtasia-based software demos and static infographics in Autocad/Illustrator. Keep up the good work so I can bookmark this thread and see awesome things now and again.

Two questions! a) Anyone going to f5 fest in NYC this April? b) What scripts do you guys generally use day-to-day? Was checking out CreativeDojo's post on different setups/layouts/approaches-- http://creativedojo.net/after-effects-workspaces/

I feel like I'm doing it wrong because I use one of the default layouts and don't really use any plugins apart from duik/particular. I'm only on motion graphics work like once every few months though so I've never felt a huge need to optimise my workflow. Can you give me some examples of absolutely essential plugins I should be using as a motion graphics professional? Also I tend to shy away from things like ease and whizz because I inherited someone else's file once where all easing was controlled by expressions and it was a nightmare to work with. Duik btw, for anyone who hasn't heard of it, is a plugin made for rigging 2D characters in AE, but I use it mainly for parenting puppet pins to null objects. That way you can parent them to other things and link them to expressions and stuff. It's very handy.

Can you give me some examples of absolutely essential plugins I should be using as a motion graphics professional? Yeah, other people's files are always a landmine. The things i've seen... Plugins: Particular is probably the most handy. It's not for just particles, you can use it to populate scenes and do other stuff like make fake crowds. It's quite worth it, most companies I've been at have it. Denoising stuff like neatvideo or Red Giant's one are good if you use a lot of Dslr footage or shoot in low light. FilmConvert has sweet film grain. Not essential but it's way faster than AE's grain. Used at one or two companies. Element v2 from videocopilot looks very interesting -nothing you couldn't do with c4d lite or even normal c4d. Colour vibrance from Videocopilot is kind of handy when compositing stuff on black and for VFX. Free. Scripts: Ouroboros is really handy for motiongraphics. Sure, you could do it yourself but I feel like the script really speeds up this kind of stuff and leaves it editable. Great for multicolour lines and that sort of thing that i'd previously do with set matte or shape layers. Link here:" http://www.sandervandijk.tv/blog/ouroboros BGrender from AEscripts is one I like. I've never liked that you can't render without using the whole CPU which slows you down. Sometimes, you just want to render something using 30% of the RAM and CPU in the background while you keep working. Only bad thing: if you have a big project file, it needs to save it first. I've used it before Media Encoder was around and it's still my preferred way. Media encoder is good, but more for spitting out the final renders and files for the web. BGrender opens a terminal window and you can even close AE if you wanted. Media encoder is better if you have a huge list of comps to render out fast. Reposition Anchor point from AEscripts is one of many reposition scripts. True Comp Duplicator duplicates the comp exactly and any elements in it. Handy if you need a depth map.(AEscripts) 3D layer distributor quickly moves layers in depth and opacity etc. Free I think (AEscripts). PT_multiplane is good (I got it when it was free) as it allows you to move elements in 3d space without making them bigger or smaller. Saves you a lot of time if you do a lot of this sort of thing. Particularly good for photo/real elements. Check the demo vid on AEscripts for a better explanation. Motionboutique just put up 3 scripts on aescripts that I use very occasionally for free. They released them a while back. One makes layers fold quickly. I forget the name. For those not in the know, there's a lot of "name your price" scripts on AEscripts - probably worth having a dig and seeing if there's some that work for the sort of work you do. You can write whatever number you want. Some scripts I've come back and bought because of how good they were. Most of the scripts also have a trial period too. the_lion fucked around with this message at 05:35 on Jan 25, 2015 |

So, a long time later, Vigoro has been released! If anyone still looks in here, it got its start as Circles (which is still available for free on my site!) right here on this very thread! It's a tool for creating offset animations in AE. I'm pretty proud of it, check it out! - https://www.othercubed.com/vigoro If you don't care, you can also just watch the release trailer here: https://vimeo.com/118480617 And there's also a shorter teaser! : https://vimeo.com/115976803

Yo, OtherCubed! I don't think you set up the 1.03 upgrade properly on AEScripts. Doesn't show up in the version history of my downloads and since it's not a name your price script, I can't upgrade for "free."

This year, I've started working full time doing motion graphics/animation, explainer videos, and stuff. It's not the greatest art, but I'm getting there. My first stab at some opening credits kind of a thing. Tell me how I could improve on this, please. https://vimeo.com/122807962 I wanted to make something abstract that could loop, maybe use it on my own website. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhbFlsAhiig This is a portion of a thing - it's in 3D but I tried to get it to look like vector lines instead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BBiUChuRMs

quick AE question, and it's a principle-of-the-thing kind of question, so I don't know where else to research it. WHY does AE not have an option to put layers into a folder? Like Flash, for instance. I've got a pretty long clip, and I'm making pre-comps as much as possible, but I'm still getting deep into layers. Is there a logical reason to this that I'm missing? Like - is it a way to keep users from making too many layers or something?

Nope – there are plug-ins for this now, as a matter of fact. I don't have first-hand experience with them, personally, but they sound pretty handy if your layers/precomps are getting out of hand! https://vimeo.com/121569449 I'm 99% sure there's another one floating around somewhere but can't remember the name.

Focus has been on the architecture rewrite though, and that's Big News.

I'm finally getting the hang of this whole easing animating thing in After Effects. But, seriously, how is this different from animating in Flash? (question for people who've done a lot in both programs. I did flash for over a decade before I got over to AE.) I love the results, but when I step back and look at it, it reminds me of stuff I did five years ago. I'm curious why there's such a resurgence in this kind of stuff? magnificent7 fucked around with this message at 02:32 on May 2, 2015 |

I think AE is just a lot more versatile. You can animate in it and also do compositing and color correction. Flash is more limited. Though if you're wondering why this kind of animation is back in fashion... I guess cause it looks good but isn't too expensive or super difficult? Did it ever go out of fashion or did the preferred program just change?

Anyone know a decent way to do light trails in After Effects? I typically do editing and color, and only touch AE to make lower thirds, but I've been voluntold that I need to learn how to use it. Which is fine, I've been meaning to learn more about it, I can get work to pay for some online courses and books, but I've also been handed a project that needs to be done now. It's mostly fairly simple, some vector graphics flying around in 3D space fading into a new logo. That part's easy, I've already animated all the objects, but they want them to have glowy trails follow them around that fade out. I've found a few tutorials, but they all use Trapcode Particular, which I don't have available (I will be requesting it, but finance moves slowly, I'll be lucky to have it in 6 weeks). If it can't be done, so be it, they know they waited too long and gave me this too late, but if it can be done I'd like to do it.

Video copilot from memory had a non plugin light streak tutorial that is very old. You can also use the echo effect but expect huge render times the nicer you make it look. Just make a shape, move it and add the echo. It's not the greatest by any means but it is easy to set up. I swear creative cow had a thing a long time ago using the Vegas effect too-before particular came out.
