I never seem to be able to sing all the way through Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt without choking up a little bit.

And then this song.

I think it might be the lyrics, or what happens in the story during the song, but it's just so triumphant and so drat tragic at the same. "Climb to the top of the world and as you stand tall, you will see that as you fall, you will fall from a height most men will never reach." ...Except what he did ended up being worthless and he died for basically nothing. :qq:

Lots of songs about cancer here. :smith:

Here, have another one! :gbsmith:

My mom died of cancer a year ago, so I can pretty much never listen to the Verve's "The Drugs Don't Work" ever again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToQ0n3itoII

I also can't listen to Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" without crying, since that was my mom's cellphone ringtone and she was glued to her phone so if you spent more than a half an hour with her, chances are you'd hear this song. We played this at the end of her memorial service and a lot of people simultaneously burst into tears.

Neutral Milk Hotel's "Three Peaches" (written for a friend of the singer who had made a suicide attempt, and who a few years later after this song was recorded made another attempt and did die) is really powerful
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFFlyNzvAeY

Stuck in the middle with you.
I absolutely cannot listen to Hero of War by Rise Against without getting all teary-eyed, mostly because I was a soldier working in my post's Casualty Affairs office when 9/11 happened and we invaded Iraq, and I knew a lot of guys and gals who had exactly this "I'm gonna join the Army and defend my country" attitude, and came home all sorts of hosed up from the things they saw and did, and committed suicide. I never hated a job so much as when I would have to go in at three in the morning to receive a report about something like that, and have to send an officer to knock on his family's door and give them the news, and then sit down with distraught, crying and often hysterical families to work out benefits and funeral details the next day. Every time I hear this song, it dredges all of that back up and brings it all right back to the front of my mind.

edit: RA is my favorite band, and when I got to see them live, I bawled like a big baby in the middle of the crowd when they did this song; they had a group of disabled vets from the Wounded Warrior Project with them, and it was just too much for me.

Dropkick Murphys' version of "Green Fields of France"

Tom Waits, that magnificent bastard, always gets me with "Never Let Go"

Seanan McGuire's cover of Talis Kimberly's "Still Catch the Tide", last verse in particular:

So you and the sea have had a fine and a fitting vengeance
I’m no more capable of leaving here
Than I left you able to return to your sea dreams
Well I’m sorry now – I’m sorry now, do you hear:

(Chorus)
I never thought that I could hold you forever
Always knew deep down you’d have to go home
I can be grateful for these bright years together
And I know you miss the salt sea foam
If you hurry, you can still catch the tide, my love
If you hurry you can still catch the tide

It's not even necessarily the lyrics (though they aren't terribly happy), but more the melody. The semi-gibberish of the chorus may be grand and sweeping but holy poo poo does the lead singer sound depressed.

THUNDERDOME LOSER
Billy Joel - And So It Goes
I first heard this one lying in bed with my ex. I'd been through a pretty rough year in the wake of some other girl and was in a pretty hosed up place, only beginning to open up and deal with some trust issues. "You can have this heart to break" just hit me.
That was a long time ago, but that lyric sticks with me. The calm, measured pace of the words and the iambic tetrameter and the lyrics make a melancholy that just hits me.

Procul Harem - Whiter Shade of Pale (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7AUdVfbc90). I want to say it started when I saw it in something sad, but I don't remember what that thing was...

Whereas Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah was definitely used in the sad scene in Shrek, but that's not why it makes me feel teary to the core. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIw0ewEsNHs

And Moments of Pleasure by Kate Bush (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5P0v0kGauc) chokes me up.

I've been listening to this all day, and crying:

Les Miserables (Anne Hathaway) - "I Dreamed A Dream"

The broadway version is good, but the way it's portrayed in the movie with Fantine, broken upon her bed, caked in dirt and tears, her heart empty except for this song lamenting the failed dreams of her childhood....
Gah, I can't even finish that sentence. It's absolutely gut-wrenching.

I'm Your Moon, by Johnathan Coulton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3kfZnpbKWU

I don't know why, but it just makes me sob every single time. I'll think, "Oh, I'm okay. I really like this song, I can listen to it now, I'm not emotional now." and then, boom! I'm crying.

It's one of those songs that means more than it does, you know? I mean, yeah, obviously, it's about Pluto, but it's obviously about feeling devalued and maybe a little bitter. It's about trying to keep your head up, and maybe mourning a little, too. There's a lot going on.

And then I think about poor Pluto sitting out there, all alone and feeling left out. It's dumb, but sometimes I kind of cry about the literal meaning, too, 'cause Pluto is one of my favorite planets (it'sstillaplanetshutup).

Ah, I'm tearing up again, now!
