Another thing I liked about this show was that it seemed to purposefully set up situations that would play out brutally on a show like Oz. Like the screwdriver going missing, or getting locked in an industrial dryer. But then they turn the screwdriver into a dildo not a weapon, and getting locked in the dryer doesn't mean horrifying burns, it's just a super huge inconvenience for the characters to deal with. I liked that there were never any really huge stakes raised until the final scene of the final episode.

The different tone is pretty much due to how the Oz setting was in a maximum security prison with genuine murderous psychopaths such as Adebisi or Schillinger.

I did catch that! But Let's is a common prop "brand" of chips - it was seen in Arrested Development as well. Community is the only show that actually made Let's a thing, instead of just a prop. You can see a bunch of the prop brands here.

It's a somewhat hard show to follow tone wise since it seems to stray from different things such as the soul crushing experience of prison life but then quickly switch over to slapstick comedy with the wild booty dancing scenes/Pornstache one-liners.

I want to know what the joke about the penguin, the farmer and the eggplant. It starts with "a penguin and a farmer walk into a bar" and ends with "He's not an eggplant he's retarded." The elude to it several times like during Red's flashbacks and during the Christmas Carol tryouts.

Does anyone know the joke???

Yeah, he's quite the sniveler. His rant :qq: at the sexy bartender was especially great. At first I thought they'd make him charming/sad and he'd get her sympathy, but he just whined and she was totally turned off. It's like he wanted her to make the move so he'd feel less guilty about cheating on his fiancée.

My favorite line of the series was when the big boss (Figueroa - is she the warden?) came down on Healy for his anti-lesbian bullshit and he should "get some loving help". Wonderful.

She's the warden's aide/personal assistant/executive secretary/chief embezzler (or something along those lines). She mentioned her role in like the first episode, but I don't recall exactly what it was. I don't think we've ever met the warden.

I liked this show. But I hate hate hated both Jason Biggs and Laura Prepon. Jason Biggs because Larry is a huge rear end in a top hat, and Laura Prepon because I think she is a bad actor and this didn't convince me otherwise. Gosh she's annoying.

My favorite part of the show is the Taystee/Poussey interactions. They're just the perfect bffs.

I literally raised my fist in excitement when the screen faded to orange. You be monster everyone wants you to be, Pipes!

Do we have any casting news on whether Biggs is returning? The character's story seems completely done, and I don't think his two scenes an episode outside of prison are an important part of the show.

His father is still her lawyer. Besides, I'd imagine that they'll keep him in the cast since he was/is the main POV outside of the prison.

Red is definitely a big softie who gives a lot of tough love. You see this later in the series, even - when she discovers that Tricia was still on drugs, she kicks her out of the "family." After Tricia's suicide, you hear her say that she never meant that she was out forever, she just needed to learn her lesson.

That scene, and the scene where she tries to sabotage the kitchen and ends up getting someone badly burned, has me wondering how her character is going to change next season. Maybe we'll start to see her losing confidence in herself and backing down from confrontation more often.

I don't get it, we're not spoilering stuff?

Seriously, the character of Porn Stache is great. He's a buffoon, a pervert and a laughable sadistic rear end in a top hat. He makes the show for me.

I was also surprised and saddened that the counselor who I thought was a decent person turned out to be the one clear rear end in a top hat in the administrative staff.

Healy was a straight up rear end in a top hat from the beginning, within the first few episodes, he made multiple references to how Piper was "not like the other inmates" and how he "gets her". Also he wanted to segregate the butch women into their own wing, and got super creepily interested when he thought someone harassed Piper sexuality, and was deflated and disappointed when she said she was fine.

Dude was a creepy hosed up douchebag from the get go.

He's so well acted as well. Between the stache and what a good job the actor is doing, it took me a few episodes to realize that he's the same guy who played Nick Sobotka on The Wire.

I like the actor and the character is good as a plot device, but I thought he was a bit too cartoonishly evil. Although, in retrospect most of the non-main characters were pretty one dimensional so I'm not sure if it breaks up the consistency of the show or not.

Yeah it's creepy interest especially since Healy is stuck in a failed marriage and sees Piper as some sort idealized replacement wife.

On the subject of Healy, that actor also played Steve Fields in Deadwood, aka the white racist who jizzed on Bullock's horse, took over the livery, and eventually got kicked in the head and became a vegetable. I wouldn't have recognized him without some serious wikipedia help, and now that I know I can't un-see him as his Deadwood character. But to go from that role to this one shows that the guy has range, if nothing else.

I agree that he turned into a weirdo pretty quickly, but in the first few episodes I took him to be a pretty nice guy as he said nice things to Piper, lamented about the broken nature of the justice system, and then bribed Tastyee with candy to get the real scoop on how Piper was doing. I even felt bad for the guy as Caputo, the head of the prison, called him a bunch of girls names and shat all over him, though after he got out the dresses and got on the anti-lesbian train he was pretty thoroughly revealed as a creep. However, I think that was the overall point - Piper went in, thought the fellow inmates ala Red were the bad guys and that the system ala Healy would watch out for her, yet it turned out to be the exact opposite. Hardly a deep analysis but then again it's hardly a deep show.

Well it's a somewhat realistic part of the show, prison officials are always looking to recruit prisoners to rat out things such as hiding cell phones and other contraband.

It's also why another real-world aspect of prison survival is to avoid talking or getting friendly with the prison staff.

I just finished the season a couple of days ago - WOW. This show is loving amazing. I mean, on the one hand it's kinda sad that it takes for a show to be set in a women's prison for there to be this wide a variety of women represented in such an open and complex way, but still, it brings me such joy. When I started watching, I thought Piper and her lame rear end fiance were gonna be the main focus through out - well, they kind of are, but I love how much of the stories of the other inmates you get to see. Ms Claudette's arc? Brilliant and loving heart breaking. And Pennsatucky, what a great villain - she treads the line between ridiculous and laughable, and unpredictably evil and deranged. At the same time you also see her humanity and the complexity of her character, as you do with the rest of the inmates (and prison officials, to an extent).

Yeah was amusing how they set up Larry and Piper to be the main characters.

However they end up not being as interesting, sympathetic or developed as the supporting cast such as Sophia.

Yes, Suzanne is the best. I didn't realize this until the Bora Bora Bora episode, when she was trying to scare the kid by yelling Shakespeare at her. Also Bora Bora Bora is the funniest episode in the entire series, between the scared straight stuff and Pennsaltucky trying to cure the girl in the wheelchair.

I finished the season, I must be really shallow since I really enjoyed the show. I didn't have many expectations beyond a casual recommendation from a friend. Plus, a dramedy with tits does not seem like the place to explorer racial tensions in America and the penal system. It makes sense for a lot of that to be ignored.

I found Jason Beggs to be the worst and most loathsome of the characters and am definitely rooting for Alex and Piper to work out their differences and be happy together.

Here's hoping this show doesn't go into Weeds territory.
