"yay Veola pl- oh dammit main plot again"
Update 14: Fort Galga

Music: Inferno

This is the reward I got for getting however many items for Lector, making this the only time I have to reference Lector in this entire update! :)

I decided to try my hand at smithing again before I run off to the fort. We'll have to do a lot of fighting and I'm poor from all the money I spent on synthesis items, so I thought maybe I could simulate a new weapon by doing this.

Hmm, this might be okay...

12 def, 15 Mana. Not bad at all. I think I'll keep it for now.

Okay, people, there's more to life than the deadly odor thing.

I decided to zip through the fairy's house so I could revisit the fiery death path to get that Growloon I didn't kill before to raise my rank, since I only need one more. On my way through...

Of course. You can use those stones to create explosives.

Wow, how'd you know that, Delsus?

There weren't any cute girls in my geology class, so I had to pay attention.

That's good news. I don't suppose you could collect some legien stones for me. I need five of the same color. Try to bring me the best stones you can find. I'll give you a reward based on the quality of the stones you bring.

Unfortunately, this is a formal sidequest, and as I just learned, the game can only allows one sidequest to be active at a time so I really need to do this as soon as possible. I do have more than 5 Red Legien on hand, but...you know, I bet Hute could sell me some more Silver or Gold, and she's near the fiery death path (can you guys tell I've forgotten the proper name of that place? it's Valiant Path by the way )

Huh? What are you guys doing here?

Um...What are you doing here?

I heard about this ruin while I was in Arcose...so I wanted to check it out. There may be a sanctuary beneath the lava flow...I'm not sure why it was built, but it seems dangerous experiments were done there. But then, the volcano erupted suddenly, and it was all covered in lava. Unfortunately...not much can be done about that now.

Lava, huh? If only there was a way to freeze everything.

...That's it! You're a genius! We just need to make a lot of Ice Bombs!

Rurona runs out of the area.

...and there she goes. Is she really going to do that?

...I don't know.

She must really love ruins.

I made my way back up to the place I got blocked off last time, and...the Growloon was gone. I wondered for a second if maybe I killed it and forgot, but then I realized that maybe it didn't load properly because of Rurona's cutscene at the beginning. So I left and came back...

...and it turns out that the Growloon is still alive, but there's an invisible wall that prevents Destruction Blast from hitting it. Yeah, gently caress you too, game.

Okay, I also wanted to visit Hute for some Legiens. Are you guys ready for one of the more surreal moments in the game?

Music: Dota!

What!?

What do you mean, sold out? You have stuff right there!

If I say we're sold out, we're sold out. Bother someone else today, okay?

… …

Are you really Hute?

Of course I am! Can't you tell by looking at me?

Why's Hute smell like cigarettes, meow?

I know who you are...

Huh!? Two Hutes?

Which one's the real Hute?

Why are you doing this again, sis!?

Aww...you're no fun, sis. Why'd you have to come back so soon?

Why do you keep doing this?

What? It's fun.

Fun!? You're annoying my customers!

I'm not hurting anyone! Besides, they're your only customers, lately.

W-Well, I usually have more!

Fine, fine...I'll think about stopping.

...That wasn't the first time?

No...it seems like every time I leave, she comes in to harass my customers. There's gotta be some way to get even with her...

Huh?

What is it?

...Nevermind.

Guess I'll talk to my sister about it. Later.

... … … ...I can't make this stuff up, folks.

Aaaanyway, Hute has just enough Gold Legien and I have just enough money to get 5 total. Back to the blacksmith!

...Hmm. I'm not sure if that was really worth the money and expending semi-rare items for. Oh well, at least the sidequest is done.

I went back to Kavoc, got sort of confused, and headed to Veola's because that's always a good place to be, and triggered a new cutscene...

:siren:
Music: A Girl's Memories
:siren:

...That does not concern you.

Oh really? Well, I say it does. You're causing the Chamber of Commerce a lot of trouble. This place stinks, it's loud, and those random explosions...

Those aren't related to the Chronolex.

Hello!? I don't care! Finish up your Chronolex and get the hell out of here!

I -

I -

you -

you can't just -

I hate you

...Did he just come here to hurt her feelings?

That's what it looked like.

I have other customers. If you don't intend to buy anything, please leave.

Ha! You're helping customers now? That's a laugh! You know what? Just keep it up. You're better off blowing yourself up, anyway.

This guy better thank his god that this game doesn't allow me to kill NPCs. Thankfully, he leaves the shop at this time.

...I'm sorry you had to see that, Mr. Klein.

Who was that? He didn't seem like a customer.

He wasn't. He's a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He's got a reputation for verbally abusing people around here.

Sounds like someone I know. What was that, uh, Chronolex thing?

...It doesn't concern you.

C'mon! I'm trying to show interest. Can't you tell us what it does?

… …

...Alright. The Chronolex is an ancient device.

Uh huh...

...Nevermind.

What!? Come on!

If I told you, you'd never believe me.

You might be surprised.

Please, just leave me alone...

I was only asking -

It has nothing to do with alchemy! I don't have to tell you anything!

Well, THAT was depressing...on the plus side, we're finally starting to get into the meat of Veola's story. I'd forgotten how long it takes for her arc to really get going past the initial “Veola starts to more or less tolerate Klein and Lita's presence” phase. But that's part of why I love her.

Speaking of meat, we're also finally ready to take on the “real” content of this update, Fort Galga! I stocked up on some alchemy items (nearly burned through all my Spirit Elements to make 9 of these but they're worth it and I can always farm more), so let's go!

Music: Popcorn Strategy

By the way, between this update and the Puni God stuff, Pilke has become a strong contender for the status of being my favorite non-shopkeeper NPC.

Hold on just a second. Are those chickens your “boys”? What are you tryin' to pull?

Relax, I've got it under control. They're not here yet.

Perfect...just perfect.

Besides, there's some stuff you guys gotta do for me, first. See those cannons all around? You need to take 'em out. Even we couldn't survive a hit from those bad boys.

So all we have to do is knock out those thieves, right?

There you go, toots! Then there's nobody to fire the cannons.

What's to stop them from firing as we approach?

Chill out, geez. We'll be distracting them while you approach.

It's worth a shot. Let's go.

Get on your knees or get outta the way!

Vile Man: What's with this guy? He thinks he's gonna take us on.

Ohhh, you better believe I brought backup!

Evil Man: You tink yer funny! I'll murderize yer face!

Live Man: Ha ha ha ha! Dance!

Yaaah! A little help here!

Yep, I'll get right on that.

Right after I check the monster log.

SUPER PUNI

Music: Ferocious Drive

This is the first really combat intensive section of the game, and I remembered it being hard but it's not really all that bad. Most of the enemies are three different varieties of thief, who are somewhat fast but don't hit all that hard. They can also use Herbs for a decent heal, but that's more of an annoynace than anything.

The worst thing about them is sometimes they get a “Quick!” action, which as best I can tell means that sometimes they just get an extra turn. Even then, they aren't that dangerous.

They also drop Falcuttas sometimes. I kept Arlin with his poison sword for now, but I'm sort of intrigued by this other weapon as well. I'll probably just forget about it until Arlin gets a weapon that's better than both.

Klein can ELE EXTRACT power and stone elements from these one-way arrows, like the ones in Iris' Resting Place...

And I can also extract elements from my human foes! Most (if not all) of these enemies turn into stone elements (?) which aren't exactly rare so Klein's usually better off using Flame or Ice Bomb or whatever instead of using his weaker standard attack.

Speaking of which, there's an alchemy item in one of these towers! This is Aeroangel, a decent wind-based mana item. I'll try it out on the boss. Oh yeah, I was supposed to try out some of my unused mana items here, wasn't I?

The ladies are archers/gunners, and the most dangerous enemies here in my opinion. They have relatively powerful attacks, and they like to use delayed attacks (they fire into the air and the attack hits a couple turns later). I usually go after them first. The knight/merc guys are just standard physical fighters, stronger and sturdier than the thief type enemies but slower.

First mana item display; the Sleepaid. The sleep regulator will regulate your sleeping. It has a decent area of effect, too, so it can be handy for groups of enemies (such as here).

Incidentally, Norn also has a sleep spell, but it's a double type move, while Sleepaid is instant. I'm not sure if there's really any reason to favor the spell over the mana item.

The Love Gem inflicts Charm, which is kind of like what paralysis or stop is in most games – the afflicted character just doesn't get to do anything until the status is removed. Pretty neat, but as I said, the Love Gem also is kind of expensive (10 Wood Elements and 1 Evil, and the latter has a x3 multiplier from Plua).

I might be a little drunk with power. Extracting elements is just too fun. First the square, then my fellow humans...only when I have extracted the entire world will my extract-lust be sated.

(that would be a much more compelling villain than the one we actually have)

Once we kill all of the enemies on the left and right sections, Pilke's syndicate shows up.

Nice job, guys! Now it's our turn! Let's show 'em how it's done in the PF! IT'S PARTY TIME!

The fairies proceed to throw themselves at a huge metal gate.

Looks like we're even, playa.

It works surprisingly well. Also, I'm not sure if Pilke is addressing Delsus, Klein, or us.

This is a book, and quite possibly the best titled book of all time. We'll give this to Yach and eventually Veola someday. Be sure to get it!

Okay, next up is the Obake Bag. I thought maybe it was a status effect (or several). Well, as it turns out...

it forgoes that and just does HUGE damage. I'm gonna have to make some more of those.

Oh yeah, Lita learned a new ability. As I recall, this is one of those abilities that ejects enemies from battle. I should have tested it out here.

Instead, I had her drop a rock on her enemies. I love Stone Blast.

Lita also powered up right after using it, so she's good to go for the boss fight.

Unholy Water just inflicts bio. It also has an area of effect and it's surprisingly easy to mass produce, but so far I haven't really needed poison to help me win randoms. The Herbal Drop is kind of nominally useful, I guess? I think one of Norman's drinks cures Sleep, too. Whatever. And of course the Mark of Courage sounds super cool but I forgot didn't want to waste one on a fight here.

Once we kill everyone in the central left and central right areas, we can proceed to the boss.

Video: The Bandit Boss

Music: Duke of Stratosphere (new boss theme!)

Mr. Brigand: I'm impressed that 5 people had the skill to overcome the fort of 100 men. Of course, it also takes great skill to command fifty thieves.

Fifty? Oh shoot, meow...We came to the wrong fortress, meow.

Mr. Brigand: No, you stupid cat! That was the trick! Forget it. Finish them!

So he scared people away by lying about their numbers? Lame.

Mr. Brigand: I didn't come this far just to give it up without a fight.

You should have just accepted you were a loser and moved on with life.

I can't stand people like you. You're not just a murderous thief...you're also a liar!

Mr. Brigand: Oh please, spare me the sermon. It's time to die!

The final battle still isn't too bad. Most of the trouble is getting rid of his minions quickly, since their combined damage can add up pretty fast.

Lita drop kicks the ladies...

Klein blows up the wolves...

Aeroangel does solid damage (just shy of 200) and has knockback. Unfortunately I'm pretty limited on Air Elements as well right now, so I won't get to use it much more for a bit.

Eventually the leader can summon new allies, but falcon hawks really aren't a big deal right now. He goes down quickly enough...

...And Norn continues pulling her weight for the team.

Klein nabs Pass Item, which expands Mana Item's area of effect in the opposite direction of Wide Item. Also worth having.

...And we're done for this update! Next time we'll see what lies beyond Fort Galga and hopefully reach this Nelvia place.

I remember Norn's Telekinesis being more effective than it appears to be here. I probably just put more points into it.

Veola suffers the fate of the genius: being mistreated by assholes that don't understand that progress isn't something that you can get without experimentation and a couple of explosions.

Does Klein actually learn anything from those books, or can he only copy Mana items?

Klein only gets Mana items from treasure chests or a few plot scenes (like getting Ether Bulb from Zeldalia). The books are for Yach and Veola's benefit, I don't think Klein can do anything with them directly. They probably also count towards Lector's item list.

Update 15: Spare Change

Now that we've dealt with the fort, we can check out what lies on the other side, and perhaps find this Cleft of Nelvia place.

Of note is a cliff just a little bit south of the fort. We can go through this little one-screen area to reach Arcose and Poto's Forest (we can also use Deimia's step-stool property to get back up this way, meaning that our foray through the fort was secretly not necessary but it was fun so I won't complain).

If we head north, the path will split east/west (though both paths meet up at the north end of the map, so it's just a big circle). On the west side we have another cliff area with some Growloons...

Music: Whistle

...and on the east side we have this odd little abandoned building. I feel like this must be important for something but I can't imagine what. Anyway, there are Growloons here, too, plus a neat and uncommon music track.

Music: Crack in the Earth

Wow...I can't even see the bottom.

If I said don't look down, that's the first thing everyone would do, so...um...look up.

… …

What's wrong, Norn?

I'm s-scared m-m-meow...of heights...meow...

Funny...I thought cat girls always landed on their feet.

Meow! That's CATS, meow! Hiss! There's a difference!

Don't worry, Norn. Just hold on to me.

You'll hold my hands too, meow?

Of course. Come on...good kiddie...

Thanks Klein, meow! You're the sweetest!

Hmph! The ~sweetest~, huh?

What?

Never mind.

Yes, Lita, Klein is in fact allowed to be nice to other people. clingy bitch

There's not a whole lot to say about the Cleft, really. I actually kind of like the notion of climbing down a steep cliff face, but at the end of the day it's still just a mostly linear path. There are a couple of points of interest along the way, though.

This area is largely pig-infested. The standard pink ones aren't so bad, although they have a burrowing ability that's a bit annoying because it makes them impossible to harm between when they start the attack and when it executes. There are also pig casters (???) who aren't nearly as annoying as their Puni caster cousins, but if you try and attack them directly then another pig (assuming any are still alive) will take the hit for them. Fortunately, thanks to most people's large area of effect attacks, I can target a pink pig and still hit the caster pig. Pigs pigs pigs.

I'm trying to be good about using Turn 2 Candy. I think I have a decent stock of 10 or so assorted pieces. Anyway, the golems here have good HP and not much else.

A bit into the area we come across a house, and we can either go through it or take a side path. The side path is very important to check out first, because...

*yawn* Finally, it's my turn...Oh, are you the ones who released me?

Who're you?

Silwest...the wind Mana?

Yes. I can control invisible currents of wind in the air! By the way...How come you can see me?

I'm an alchemist.

Whoa, no way!...I'm kind of tired of this place. Mind if I tag along?

Are you sure? I mean, we'd be glad to have you.

Cool! It's a deal!

And just like that, we have our sixth Mana! No tutorial this time – Silwest didn't bring a new power with her, she just has the same Barrier ability as Nymph.

Silwest is the first Mana we have who can handle Lightning (albeit at a hefty multiplier) and as the Wind specialist can handle that element much better than Nymph. We can give her waters as gifts, so I wooed her with well water and foul water because I am a charmer.

...Now that I think about it, she accepted waters as gifts but Nymph did not. Weird.

Anyway, Popo got Klein's ELE EXTRACT powered up pretty far, so I had Klein equip Silwest instead (she boosts both Pass Item and Wide Item for him, plus she offers an excellent +20 speed).

Okay, now it's time to head on through the house. There are a couple of people living in this area, but none of them seem to have much of note to say.

There's a second house a bit further down that has a save point in it, if you need to rest up.

There are also invisible pigs. Maybe I just got lucky but they didn't seem to dodge as often as the invisible Puni do.

Music: Konkon Fountain

Yeah, supposedly you receive one wish if you toss something valuable into the spring.

Really, meow?

It's just a story, y'know?

Why don't we test it, meow?

What the-

HEY! That's my wallet!

Norn chucks the wallet into the spring, and...

:geno: I am the spirit of the spring. Have you donated one of your possessions?

She dropped my wallet in there!

:geno: ...People are always dropping junk in here. How come I'm the one who has to fish it out? Well, if you promise not to dump more crap in here, I'll return your belongings. So...Was it this jewel! Or did you lose this stone?

Look, lady, I just want my wallet...

:geno: Look, don't sweat the details, guy. Just pick one.

Uhh...I wasn't really expecting to get a choice here. Let's pick what Delsus doesn't want. (This is one of those secret non-choices and we get the stone either way).

We'll take the stone.

:geno: Here you go. Thanks for stopping by...

What the hell!? You traded my wallet for a stupid rock!?

I can feel powerful Mana inside it.

So...what? Do we break it open?

Hey, wait...It's a mirror.

I can feel strong Mana radiating from it.

Yes, Klein, you said that already.

DO you think this is one of the Henmil's Gate mirrors?

Well, it's a good thing I tossed my wallet in that spring, eh?

And just like that, we've stumbled upon one of the two mirrors we need to get to Avenberry. I'd almost forgotten we were working towards something that kind of resembles a goal. Anyway, we can throw more stuff in the lake but I'm too scared of pissing that spirit off to bother. Maybe later.

These plants hold the semi-rare Life element, so this is a decent place to stock up on those.

The Buffer Ring is pretty cool. It's a perfect fit for physically oriented characters, which given my party setup means Lita. By the way...

Check out Lita's stats when she's in full-blown Murder Mode. God drat. I kind of feel silly for praising Arlin's stats now because Lita is completely trashing him and everyone else. I mean, yeah, she's got good equipment and this is all at the expense of her HP and MP, but still...

Finally, this is also my main spot for farming Stained Grass. We can find quite a bit of it here, even a few different varieties (normal Stained Grass and Pretty Stained seem to be the most common, but I think I've seen Glow Stained respawn here as well).

We can also exit to the world map here, but we're immediately blocked from going further. I guess we'll have to try again later. Meanwhile, when we exit back at the top of the cliff...

Music: The Name's Beggur!

There may be highwaymen in the fort. Find them!

The knights rush off, and a couple return with a thief who managed to survive our wrath.

Sir, I've located some bandits who may have been living here.

You there, what happened?

:saddowns: Some kids attacked us outta the blue. There was five of 'em. They destroyed everything! You gotta believe me.

Just five!? It must have been Klein and his friends. Grr...Why won't he join us? No matter! Now that the thieves are gone, we can claim this fort in Alkavana's name!

Brilliant idea, sir!

Bwa ha ha ha! Oh, I know! Enough goofing off! Call in support troops to get things in order!

Right away, sir!

Hmm. I feel like I should be worried about this, but...nope, not really. This does actually have one moderately annoying effect, however.

I wonder what they're up to.

I don't care. Let's stay away from Alkavana business...

You're probably right. Let's get out of here...

...we can't go back through the fort. We just automatically get ejected.

It's really not a big deal, since teleporters exist and we can get to Arcose pretty easy from here. Let's see what's going on around town there, shall we?

Music: Fun Shopping in Arcose

…!! Ack! I'll never do it again! I'll buy the bread from now on!

What?

Oh, it's just you...You really startled me. Didn't anyone teach you to knock before entering a girl's room? You're a gentleman, aren't you?

It's a shop...Why would I have to knock?

He's right, meow! It's your fault for being so jumpy!

I agree. You're the one with cake crumbs on your chin.

YOU'RE criticizing ME for eating dessert!? I was sampling product. It's an important part of my job. Duh.

Then why were you so surprised?

Well...the owner told me not to sell anything except bread. Nevermind, less talk, more buying. Did you guys need anything?

Well, I'd like to make new stuff, but it looks like that scene didn't trigger anything. Hmm. Let's run around the greater Arcose area and see if we can get anything else to happen.

You seem happy today. What's going on?

Oh, it shows? Ha ha ha...well -

Hi, Villa. What is it this time?

YOU did it, didn't you!?

You deserved it, after what you did last time.

It wasn't that bad! What kind of sister are you?

What kind are you? Look who's talking!

What!?

Oh, you wanna fight now!?

Let's just come back later...

I wonder what she did.

Whatever it was, we should probably leave them alone.

Sisters shouldn't fight like this...

I dunno...They're related. I think this is kind of normal.

Hmm. I really don't remember if this Hute and Villa stuff ever really goes anywhere or what. I know that at least one of them is important to Blaire's arc, though, so I guess I'll keep checking on them.

Hey, Blaire has customers now. Still no new scene, though. Hmm, what else can I do? I think there's a third store in town, maybe I can check that out...

What's wrong?

:catholic: I found this old painting while I was cleaning the warehouse. But I can't find it on the record. I wonder where it came from...

Why don't you just decide on a price and sell it?

:catholic: I can't do that! Customers trust our accuracy. The day prices can be arbitrarily decided is the day our business dies.

We don't know much about art, unfortunately.

:catholic: Do you know any antique experts?

MEOW!

What is it, Norn?

Meow? Oh, meow...it's nothing...

Nothing!? You just shouted about... … ...Do you just not want to tell us?

Meow, no! I'm fine. It's not like I didn't want to mention her... …!

That's right! Lector might know about it.

No, no, meow! We can't talk to her!

:catholic: DO you think your friend could appraise this for me?

Hey...this painting just looks like a bunch of monsters.

:catholic: Yeah, it's pretty weird, huh? But look at those brush strokes! Ahhh...divine! I'll reward you depending on how much the painting's worth. Good luck.

Ugh, why does this game keep making Lector involved in things? Oh well, to the Collector's Caravan we go...

Nooo, meow!

Well, I suppose we can play later, then. Did you have a new item for me?

We're actually here for a different reason...

Oh, so you want me to appraise your painting, huh? Let's have a look see...hmm...Where'd you guys get something like this?

Why do you ask?

Because it's dangerous! You guys must be out of your minds. Just get rid of it, okay!? ASAP!!

Uhh...that's not really where I thought this was going, but okay. This guy is a common encounter at some point or another (I forget how far along, but not terribly so). I thought about fighting him normally, but Lita's still got that six MP, and you know what costs six MP?

Sure enough, it's an eject attack that won this fight in one move. It also has a weird animation that makes Lita's frames act all weird so I get extra goofy shots from it like this one.

By the way, does anyone know what K.B. Is supposed to stand for? All I can think of is killing blow.

...but it shouldn't have escaped. Seals are usually tighter than that.

You seem to know a lot about these things.

Oh, yeah...My cursed item collection is quite extensive, actually.

So...you have a bunch of these things.

I've got stuff that makes this painting look like a toy. For example, I've got a bottle with an evil spirit in it that could destroy the world.

Uhhhh, gotta run!

I always did like evil art in video games. I don't really know why. Anyway, I might as well turn in my items while I'm here...

Hiss...

Don't worry. I gave up trying to touch your ears.

I don't believe you, meow.

I'm serious. Don't worry.

… …

… …

… ...Are you sure, meow?

Of course.

… …

… …

… … Meow...you swear?

I swear. You can trust me, Item Collector's honor.

… …

… …

… …So you really aren't-

That's enough, Norn.

Okay, meow. I believe you.

I'm glad we could put all of this behind us.

What changed your mind all of a sudden? You really wanted to touch them...

I realized how selfish I was...I had no business touching her ears. I don't want Norn to hate me over something stupid like that.

Yup, me-

Besides, if I use my imagination, I can touch them whenever I want to.

Hey, that's not...meow? MEOW!?

Is that...

See? This Norn lets me touch her ears all the time. Are you jealous? This way I can stay friends with the real Norn, but still touch fake Norn's ears!

...What do you think, Norn?

Imagination is dangerous, meow.

Well, that sure was a character arc. Let's head back to Arcose and wrap things up.

Well, it's hard to say...

It sort of burned up...When we sort of fought this demon...That sort of lived in it.

:catholic: It's GONE!? I thought we'd get a lot for it.

It had a monster inside, man. You couldn't very well have sold it.

:catholic: I guess you're right...I wouldn't want anyone getting hurt. What a bummer. I guess that's life. Thanks anyway. You can take this for trying.

He hands over a Black Mana. Ehh...not really worth having to talk to Lector.

And finally...

Atelier Blaire: Cats Will Eat Anything

Cough, cough...

Are you okay?

Looks like I failed yet again...

Huh?

…! Not again! I didn't realize we had customers...Ugh, they saw me screw up...

It doesn't matter if you failed – are you alright!?

You guys again...? That's like the third time you've walked in on me!

It's the third time you've messed up when we walked in...

You guys would make horrible housekeepers...I've got no privacy.

...Housekeepers?

Hey! Stay away from that!

*chomp, munch* Failure, nothing, meow! It's super yummy!

...Huh?

I'll add this meow recipe to your list.

Don't! You're not allowed to do that!

Hmm, I wonder what this could be?

I just want to draw your attention to the “soul breaker” review. Harsh, but pretty much acceptable in this context.

I love how pissed off Blaire is that we're making her do this.

This is a joke, though, right? Nobody's ever asked me for leftovers.

No joke, meow! They still look delicious.

And that's it for today. I don't really know what's next, so I guess it's time to head back to Kavoc. We'll do that next time.

Klein and Lita

I always felt that Klein and Lita is one of the weakest aspects of this game, even before factoring Veola's presence. For whatever reason, I just never find myself rooting for them like I have with couples from other games. Plus, since the game is essentially about Klein and Lita (or more specifically, Klein trying to save Lita's life) their relationship is inextricable from the game overall.

Then again, I at least have to give the game credit for not taking the relationship completely seriously, and I feel like some of their more obnoxious moments are almost self-parody (such as just about every time Lita gets mad at Klein for directing attention at Not Lita). Even then, though, I still find myself just kinda mashing A through their moments because time spent putting up with their bullshit is time not spent synthesizing.

Thanks. Knock Back also makes sense. I just thought maybe there's some wrestling move or something that shortens to KB that I don't know about.

I have vague recollections of getting more events after getting shop ratings high enough, might be worth a try if you're ever digging for more.

Oh, and while I'm a bit late on this; if you're short on cash you can sell Dark and Blue manastones, they aren't used in anything good so there's no real need to hang on to them.

This game is really an atelier iris game mashed into a standard jrpg, but the two halves don't really mix. Obviously, gathering ingredients and crafting ridiculously powerful weapons is the better part. When I played it, I had no idea what the atelier games even were so I was kind of confused that there were all these neat systems that were completely unnecessary to going through the story.

Update 16: The Other Wind Mana

Music: To Each Their Own Way

Yeah, what she said. I'm gonna hit the hay.

I think I'll get to bed, too.

… …

Klein, can I ask you something, meow? Meow...could you sleep in my bed with me? I get so lonely at night...meow...

What!? You always slept by yourself before!

I try to be brave, meow...But it's too hard. Zeldalia always slept next to me, meow. Can't you at least try?

Meooooow...Can you at least hold my hand 'til I fall asleep?

Okay, I guess that's not so bad...

What was that!?

...Zeldalia!?

That's right. I can communicate through Norn's body. I don't do it all the time...But I like to watch over her as she sleeps.

So what's going on?

Norn's still a child. When she's alone, it reminds her of the past. She was lost in the mountains when I found her. Yes...she's a mountain cat.

!?

I personified her when she was very young. She doesn't know anything about it, though.

Why are you telling me this?

Because she seems to like you. She's a good kid, you know. Take care of her.

… …

I really don't like the idea of someone being able to hijack my body in my sleep, even if it was someone I trust. I guess as long as it's just talking then maybe it's not so bad? At any rate, going home just triggers that scene, but when we try to leave...

Oh yeah, I found pants in the house. Weird. Okay, actually leaving this time.

Music: Looming Crisis

Meow! I'm worried about Zeldalia!

:eyepop: You should steer clear of the forest until we figure out what to do about the monsters.

Kleee~iin...!

We should make sure Zeldalia is okay.

Oh meow, Klein. You always know what to say! Purr...

She's our friend. We should help her out.

:eyepop: There's supposed to be a ton of Growloons, so just let Norman know when you get rid of them.

Oscar's still hanging around the town square. Sadly, I still can't make either of his recipes (they require fairly rare items, such as Frozen Rain and Palm Fish). I bought this nifty dragon tongue from him, though.

Do you have any others? I'd love to read 'em!

Hmm...Well, I have this one.

Huh...? “My, Myself, and Bombs.” Hey, that sounds great! Thanks!

(Fade out/in)

That book was da bomb! See you later!

Oh no, Yach, that pun was da bomb. Okay, let's zip on over to the forest.

Music: The Forest Where the Witch Lives

This bit isn't too bad. The enemies in the forest are the same, so they pose basically no threat at all. We just have to find the four or five Growloons hanging out here and kill them. Easy.

As you can see, some of them are floating pretty high so you need to keep some of the environment intact as a means of reaching them. Also, there's something seriously wrong with the, um, spaceboxes of these stumps that made it nigh impossible to do what should have been a very simple jump. Oh well, I got them anyway. Once we kill the last Growloon, we automatically move on to Zeldalia's house.

Music: Cute Witch

Zeldalia! Are you okay, meow?

Ouch...it's just my back...

What's going on out there?

Oh...the Mana of Wind is just being a pain again.

SILWEEEEST! :argh:

It's been like this for awhile. I'd go do something, but not with my back acting up.

Just leave it to us!

Don't underestimate it. Nothing's more dangerous than a Mana gone wild.

Our party walks out, but Arlin stays behind for a moment...

I can't stand by and do nothing.

I know you're anxious, but now is the time for patience.

I wish I had more time.

… …

You've got plenty of time, Arlin. Isn't your best friend a clock or something?

Music: Ferocious Drive

Oh, it's not Silwest, it's just...uh...I don't actually know what I'm looking at but there's a pig involved because this is Atelier Iris.

This guy is actually pretty nasty. Physical attacks don't work, so Lita has to rely on Force Blast (and if you let her MP bottom out then she can't even do that; fortunately, I reset her MP back at base).

The Jin Rider generally does 30-40 damage per hit. That SOUNDS manageable, and I guess it really is if you're on the ball, but I wasn't so much.

I decided to cycle around my characters a bit before ultimately reverting to the usual Klein/Lita/Norn setup. Delsus' Dark Arrow is pretty mediocre here, and again it's really the only thing he can do to damage this boss.

Anyway, the reason this boss is so dangerous is that it frequently gets extra actions, so you can basically count on it getting two attacks per turn. Furthermore, even with a decent equipment setup, Klein is still kinda slow and so Jin Rider sometimes gets two turns to Klein's one (so up to four attacks).

I tried to paralyze it, but no such luck...

So yeah, this is the sort of battle that can go to poo poo very, very quickly.

Fortunately, the game allows you to swap out knocked out characters for battle-ready ones, so I got Lita and Delsus in for Norn and Klein.

Things got kind of dicey without my healer, although I have plenty of healing items around if I need them, too.

Ultimately, I was able to overpower him before he got to off any of my other characters, and Delsus and Arlin got delicious boss EXP!

Hey, it looks like Arlin is finally rounding out his skill set a little. Good to see.

Whew, glad that's over. We should report this back at the bar.

Wait, did you see that? I think it's another mirror!

How convenient.

It has a similar aura to the last one we found.

This must be the other half of the Henmil's Gate puzzle.

But what was it doing here?

It probably has something to do with that ring of stones. It's obviously manmade, so someone must have hidden the mirror here.

This game is notoriously lacking in resurrection items, and even now I only really have this one. I have the elements to make more, but I don't have a Mana who can handle the Life Element, so they'll have to wait.

Now that I look, it seems I have some of every element except one. I wonder what else there could be?

What are you looking at?

… …

Right, then. Let's report to Norman and then head off to Henmil's Gate.

Music: Town Where the Bells Chime

Everyone appreciates it. Here's your reward. [1,200 Cole]. I'm starting to think maybe these Growloons are a sign of things to come.

Really? Well, it means more work, and more money for us. So it all works out.

Ha ha ha...that's the spirit.

Hey, between the reward for the quest proper and the extra money from advancing in ranks, I'm suddenly well-to-do. I wonder how quickly I'll burn through all this money on items.

I'm not doing an Atelier Veola proper today, but this is some setup for the next update.

I'm here, too!

What, did you follow him inside?

…!

Oh, I almost forgot. You two travel a lot, correct?

Yeah, I guess we travel a lot.

Could you do me a favor? If you find a book on your way, can you bring it to me?

What kind of book?

Any kind will do. When I read new things, I think about creating new items.

So you're just stealing other people's recipes?

...That's a little rude. At least I'd read the book instead of hitting someone with it.

What's that supposed to mean!?

So if we give you new books, you can make new items for us?

I believe that's correct.

Then get ready for books, Veola.

Yessss, it's finally starting. Okay, lets talk to her again.

You asked for books, right? Here you go.

Magic in 7 Days...

It's a book for beginners, so it's probably ideal for you.

That wasn't nice, Lita.

… …

...I do not want it.

Look, we dragged this all the way back here for you!

I said I don't want it.

It's heavy! I could have thrown it at someone's head! Take it!

… …

That's enough, Lita!...I'm sorry, Veola. She's really not a bad person...I'm sure we'll bring a better book next time. I'll leave this one here, even if you don't need it. It's pretty heavy, and I'm tired of carrying it. We'll see you later.

Y'know, as oblivious as Klein is when dealing with Lita, he's surprisingly on the ball on how to interact with Veola. That's all for Veola this update, but I see quite a bit of synthesis on the horizon...

You certainly look happy.

Oh, you can tell? Well, it's because I finally found the Flawless Marvel!

Way to go!

I was just about to leave, actually. It's pretty far, so I won't be back for a while. I'll bring you back souvenirs!

Yaaay, meow!

It's time to head east – toward the ruins!

Okay, well, have fun! I wonder how long it will be before I wind up having to go there myself for some reason or another.

Oh yeah, sometimes when we talk to Yach he'll give us a random item, as a sort of reward for letting him read our books. This time he gave me a Stained Grass.

Music: Spirit's Hometown

...Hmm...Why isn't it working? Whoa-

…!

What power? THE power.

Your legacy...? Who are you?

However, the power alone is not enough to open this gate. The final requirement is that you must understand the heart of Mana.

The heart of Mana?...

You must be welcomed into the Eternal Land of Mana. Once you understand the heart of Mana and have gained their trust, the gate will open.

Wait! Who are you?

The woman vanishes.

It was a recorded illusion. She wasn't talking directly to us. That makes things a lot more complicated, doesn't it?

She mentioned the Eternal Land.

That sounds familiar.

Where the hell have I heard that before...? Well, I'm bound to remember eventually.

Think harder. You have to recall it.

Yeah, I know. Let's get moving.

Well, I guess this is a cue to head back to the base. But as soon as we enter Kavoc...

Music: Bullfight

No way...You can't even use it, anyway.

:hist101: Maybe a little pain will change your mind...

Hey, Delsus, isn't that -

Delsus charges forward ahead of the others.

Guys, guys...Ganging up on a lady is pretty low, even for scum like you.

Y-you...!

:hist101: Hey, isn't he one of Klein's friends? This must be our lucky day...

Well, it's a surprise battle against some decently dangerous enemies. These guys can also deal around 30-40 damage to one or two characters, and with six of them that can add up. Fortunately I'm still healed up and Klein and Lita were able to off three of them before they got to act, so it's all good.

Norn also picked up a new skill that boosts defense, which I suspect I'll be using rather liberally in the near future.

The knights retreat...

Delsus, you idiot! You can't just run off like that!

Listen, sweetcakes, when a girl's in danger, I help her out. It's policy.

I think you've “helped” her quite enough already!

… …

Look, about last time...

I appreciate the help, but I still can't forgive you.

Marietta storms offscreen. I wonder what she stole, anyway?

drat...I must have really pissed her off...

Gee, I wonder why!

While Delsus and Lita argue, another familiar face pops up behind our party...

Music: Beat of the Rumbling Earth

drat, Arlin, that is the goofiest angry pose I think I've ever seen. Also, I like how his hair ribbon looks like bat wings from that angle.

I've been watching you, Klein. I must say, I'm impressed.

...BASTARD!

You've done well too, Arlin. But I'm not here to fight. I've been far too busy collecting the Mana you released.

Mull! I'm not finished with you!

Relax, Arlin. Soon I'll grant you the battle you so desperately crave.

Mull teleports away...

Who is he, Arlin?

...He's my enemy. That's all you need to know.

Music: Hot or Cool

I'm assuming it's some place with a lot of Mana.

Yeah, there's a lot of 'em...

Huh? What do you know?

Er...I didn't say anything.

I heard it too, meow meow!

You'd better not be hiding something from us, Delsus.

...That's convenient. How do we know this isn't one of your tricks?

Why would I lie? I'd be wasting everybody's time.

Well, there was a door in that cave that wouldn't open...

Standing around is wasting time. We should investigate this door.

You seem pretty certain, Arlin.

Yeah, why's everyone on my case when he's talking like that?

It probably needs a key or something...

Let's just head back to Arcose. Someone there might have more info.

And we'll do that in a bit, but before we go, let's have a base conversation with Norn.

What are you studying?

Important things, meow.

Here, let me see...What's this? “The Illustrated Guide to Delicious Food”. You're studying a cookbook!?

It's not a cookbook, meow! It's alchemy!

...Right.

This is great, meow. I can use salt and water to make stew!

How's that even possible?

Look, see? I told you it was about alchemy, meow! Zeldalia will be really proud once I master everything in this book.

And that's an update. I can't help but feel like this Alexia Cave thing is a dubious lead, so join me next time as I ignore that in favor of a very special update. See you then!

Atelier Iris in a nutshell:
"yay Veola pl- oh dammit main plot again"
Update 17: Books

Atelier Veola: The Rubber Band Trick

Music: Fun Shopping in Kavoc

What do you have to apologize for?

It turns out...The book is quite useful.

See! I told you!

However, I maintain that the argument was Lita's fault.

My fault!?

:allears:

I'm just glad you could use the book.

Um...

Yes?

This is for you.

Can I get a “Hell, Yeah!”?

Are you sure?

Yes, please take them.

C'mon, Klein!

Okay, yeah...Thank you.

You're welcome.

Thanks to her research, Veola has six new recipes to try out. Let's get started!

We can make a new kind of medicine from the old stuff. The recipe calls for some flower I don't have, but...

...Raflesia works just as well, and I found several of those back at the Cleft of Nelvia, so we'll just substitute that.

Please tell me you didn't name it Medicine That's a Bit Stronger.

Of course not. Goodness, what do you take me for?

Well, then...What's it called?

Farewell, Pain.

… …

So, what do you think? I stayed up all night trying to think of a name.

...You really aren't very creative, are you?

We can also power up our Blue Bull into something better...

I wanted to make some stronger medicine, but I used the wrong ingredients and made an energy drink, instead.

...I'm almost afraid to ask, but did you name it Some Stronger Medicine?

I'll have you know I thought up a much more creative name for it. I brainstormed with words like “atomic” and “super duper”.

So what was the final verdict?

I named it Crazy Bull!

… …

So...? I spent more time coming up with the name that I did making the drink.

I pity your utter lack of creativity.

I think the most important part of the name is the “!” following it.

Since when does punctuation affect the final product?

Don't listen to Lita, Veola. I think the exclamation point is perfect.

Unfortunately, I cannot synthesize Liquid Emptiness right now (I wonder what it does, anyway?). It requires some form of Glowgrass, and I don't have any. I think we'll get some reasonably soon, but I don't remember for certain.

The Comet Jewel requires a Comet Stone and some form of powder. I used Baking Powder because I thought that was funny (Wax is expensive, okay?)

It's beautiful!

You'd better enjoy it...My arm's sore from carving it. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to round a stone like that.

Maybe you should just exercise more often.

I just wanted to show off that Veola has developed a new facial expression. It amuses me that some characters have portraits just for sticking out their tongues, especially when they are almost exclusively directed at another character.

You're just jealous!

Oh, please...

The Metal Pipe requires some sort of pipe and a Sylph's Kiss. The pipes are both easy enough to find. I have two Sylph's Kisses and I cannot for the life of me remember where I got either of them. So, um, here's hoping I don't need too many I guess.

Little sour...?

Your Metal Pipe's ready.

It's just an ordinary pipe.

Hollowing out a solid metal rod is a fairly difficult task. However...if we alter the ingredients slightly, I could make something useful.

Uh...huh? Well I don't have anything that makes Veola give me the “secret new item” prompt, so we'll leave this alone for now. Time for one of my favorite inventions!

We take one quite thing, and we combine it with another cute thing (actually I think any fish will work), aaaaand...

It's StretchyStretchy! :buddy:

(I like that “too puniesque” review)

StretchyStretchy is ready.

Another strange name, as usual. What's this loop for, anyway?

It's remarkably elastic. Here Lita, hold this end.

Like this?

Yes. Hold on tight! See how far it stretches?

Lita starts moving backward.

Hey, that's pretty cool!

And now, I release it.

OUCH! What the heck!?

Now use it responsibly. You should never do that to a friend.

Ooooh...I'll get you for that!

Think of it as a prank.

A prank!? We'll see how you feel after I “prank” you!

(...That looked really painful...)

This is pretty high up on my list of excellent synthesis skits.

I think most of the stuff we made this time is actually stuff for even later synthesis (Veola does that a lot). I think I heard somewhere that Comet Jewels are a decent way to make money, since they sell for a decent chunk of cash and the ingredients are semi-cheap, so I may try that if I find myself running especially low on funds.

But wait! There's more! Let's leave and return.

You look tired. What's the deal?

None of your business. However, I was thinking of how you said I didn't have fashion sense.

I said that?

… …

What?

At any rate, you'll be pleased to know I've begun studying fashion design. I've created some new designs. Please try them out.

Two new synthesis recipes have been added!

I wonder what kind of outfits she'll create this time.

If the clothes turn out well, I'd like Klein to model them for me.

Huh!?

If they still look outdated, you can try them, Lita.

I guess that means I'll be wearing a lot of clothes.

What'd you say?

Hey, Lita actually got a decent burn on Veola for once. This cannot stand.

All right, let's make some fairy clothes. We need a swimsuit (the red pants I found in the base last time also work), cloth, and...a fruit? Some of Norman's fruit cocktails even work.

I made some Fairy Clothes.

Wow, nice sewing job.

Why, thank you.

But...your fashion sense could still use some help.

These are actually a pretty decent equip. But there's another thing we can make out of this recipe...

I don't understand how “a lot adults only” morphed into “uninteresting”.

Hmm...These don't look much like Fairy Clothes anymore...

Wh-What is that?

Is that a bathing suit?

I guess it could be! I'll call it the Blue Swimsuit.

Seems appropriate.

I think it might look good on you, Lita.

What's that supposed to mean? I don't like it at all.

You don't have to like a swimsuit for it to look good on you.

...Heh...If you say so.

Of course. It's all in your skeletal and muscular structures.

EXCUSE ME!?

… …

Did you say small breasts...?

Why are you so upset? It's the truth. You're still attractive – just ask Klein.

Wha – me!? Er...um...I guess...

Klein, you big jerk!

L-Lita, wait!

… …?

I like how sometimes, when Veola manages to really piss Lita off, you regain control right outside like this. Anyway, let's assume some time passed for Lita to cool off and head back inside.

The other clothing synthesis recipe calls for these three specific items. Hollow Pumpkins and Star Pieces are both semi expensive but not too hard to find.

The Gogo Suit is ready. This is the pinnacle of cool. You'd be super popular in it.

… …

Is there a reason you're so outdated?

What do you mean?

If I wore that outside, I'd be laughed right out of town!

...I see.

Despite it's worth as a fashion statement, the Gogo Suit is still a pretty solid piece of equipment. It's also guys only so I threw it on Delsus because he's already the “cool but also a loser sort of” character.

Despite Veola's insistence, the Blue Swimsuit isn't really that great for Lita (though admittedly I have her with my best stuff right now so it doesn't look as good in comparison). Those stats are actually pretty decent for Norn, but I'm just too prudish to let her wear it. And I don't even want to know what that “Seductive” trait is supposed to mean.

Okay, time for a new conversation.

I dunno if I'd say it was “fun”, but it's never boring.

You have to watch out for thieves and stuff.

I see...

Were you planning on leaving? I don't mean to sound rude, but you're a little small.

Yes, I do lack your strength. It would be dangerous to leave.

You go outside, though, right?

I've considered it...But I do not want to. The only reason I would leave this shop would be to search for items and books.

Hmm...I know how you feel, being an alchemist. Why don't I look for items and books for you?

...What?

If there's anything you need, just let me know, okay?

But...why?

Why what?

...Nevermind. Thank you very much.

We're done here, right? C'mon, let's get moving!

Hey, whoa...What's the rush?

Let's just go, jerk! Hurry up!

… …

Why are you being so nice to her?

Huh? I was only trying to help!

Fine. Let's just go!

Yeah, let's just go...back inside, because I'm not done.

Uhh...I don't think that's a good reason to buy clothes. Honestly, the deadly odor thing would be a lot funnier if it didn't seem to end up in half of my items. Or maybe that's the point?

...For me?

Here you go.

“Me, Myself, & Bomb”...What a curious title.

It's better than the name you would have given it.

I doubt it. I'd rather not argue this time. I appreciate you bringing this; I'm sure it will be useful. Hmm...This Craft bomb should be easy enough...

And with that, we've got three new recipes! From a book like that, this should be some great stuff.

The Spike Bomb has some fairly basic ingredients – all three of these are easy enough to find. Let's start with the default recipe, and...

I used some pine nuts to construct a Spike Bomb. It actually damages the enemy more than once.

How's that work? Is it in several pieces?

No, it deals damage three times after it's thrown. First of all, the spikes actually hurt the person throwing it. Second, the spikes damage the enemy when the bomb makes impact. Third, and lastly, is the explosion. Naturally, that hurts the enemy.

Wait, hold on. It's going to hurt US!?

Just carrying it around might hurt a little bit...It's no big deal.

It's a huge deal! I don't want this thing!

Okay, that actually is kind of dumb. Funny, but dumb. Now let's check out this Craft thing...

All it takes is a Nue or Spoiled Nue, and Veola can turn it into a bomb. Cool!

The Craft is ready. It's a unique diffusion bomb.

So it's a bomb...but you named it Craft? That isn't like you.

The name was inspired by a famous person.

Makes sense...I knew you couldn't come up with a unique name on your own.

...Give it a rest. Anyway, it's much stronger than a bomb.

There's secretly a lot more going on with the Craft item than we can really see right now. I suspect I may even have an Atelier Veola episode focused entirely around it. But that's for later. Let's check out the last recipe from Me, Myself & Bomb...

Once again, going with the basic ingredients here to create the least intuitive bomb ever...

Bomb Armor's ready.

I won't comment on the name this time. What's it do?

It utilizes flames to repel monsters. Enemies can't get close, because you're generating a fire.

Wait...wouldn't the person with the armor get burned, too?

Hmm...I suppose you're right. Well, I hope you'll take it anyway.

The bomb armor actually offers pretty decent stat boosts. I don't know if it's really worth being on fire, though.

Finally, let's try to make a Spike Bomb with some different ingredients. This Unue thing looks promising...

So, naturally, it has as stronger name.

Let me guess...Stronger Spike Bomb?

I'm not an idiot. Would you like to hear it? It's called...Spike Bomber. The “er” suffix implies additional power.

Um...I guess...

Well, that was a fun update, but I think we're about out of stuff to synthesize for now. But hey, let's have one bonus scene with another beloved character before we go.

I think someone's downstairs! Let's go – keep quiet!

*Yawn*...What's going on, guys? Could you keep it down a little?

Why are you sleeping here?

It's past my bedtime.

Oh, okay well – That isn't what I meant!

Meow, just let her sleep.

I meant why are you sleeping in my bed?

I chose this bed because it looked soft and comfortable. What's the problem?

Why would a ghost need a comfortable bed?

Ghosts are people too!...At least, they used to be. It's not a big problem, is it? I'd like to use this bed when you're away.

Well, it would be nice to have someone looking after the place when we're gone.

...It's still pretty weird.

I hope you all enjoyed this installment of Atelier Iris Veola! I guess next time we can do more main plot stuff.

And that's why Pamela is my favorite character. She's such a laid back troll.

I'm starting to think that with all the bickering Lita does with other girls, that she's secretly a repressed closet lesbo and tries to project her raging lust for women to a weaker out of shape dude like Klein.

Yeah, it makes sense that it would hurt the user, I'm just questioning if it makes sense as a weapon I would ever want to use.

Then again, it's probably actually really good in practice and I just don't know it because I hoard items even in games that revolve entirely around item creation. I really need to get over that for the LP.

Update 18: Delsus is a Jerk

Music: Town Where the Bells Chime

In preparation for something I know is coming and fear, I decided to do some upgrading. While doing so, I ran across an instances where I apparently matched a Mana to a type of stone correctly or something. This happened with both Deimia and Uru, and the result...

...is reasonably promising. I slapped this on Norn's weapon to help her not die.

Atelier Norman: The Right Way to Eat Buffalo Wings

I know this is a weird request, but...please keep visiting her. She's like a daughter to me. I know she's not good at making friends, so I worry sometimes.

Oh, she's definitely not the friendly type!

Heh...I hope you'll look past that. I'd appreciate it if you could be friends.

I always thought that Veola and Norman's relationship could have been expanded on a little more. They're allegedly very close, but it's really only this scene and the very beginning that I recall saying as much. To be fair, it's hard to establish a relationship between two NPCs who live in different buildings that they never leave, so it doesn't really bug me that much.

Anyway, I experimented a little bit with improving the item quality of stuff I've already made here in hopes that it might give me new scenes with Norman. I don't know if that made this happen or not, but a new scene did indeed occur!

Hmm...maybe you're right. I should create some new drinks.

Yeah, you should. In fact, I have an idea for you!

Really? Let's hear it.

Here's the thing...most of the drinks tend to be sweet, especially cocktails. Why don't you make a crazy hard sake or something?

Ah, I think I understand. I don't have a lot of sake here...And I get what you're trying to do. You want me to make more drinks you like, but have it seem like my idea.

Ha ha ha...you got me. I just want more manly drinks, y'know?

Alright, alright, I'll make you a manly drink.

Hmm, that's an interesting name. The ingredients are easy enough, although I went ahead and subbed in Red Peppers because I believe they're considered higher quality and even if they aren't we all know how Delsus likes everything as spicy as possible.

Here's Delsus' favorite, the Hell Soju.

Finally! This oughtta be good...Down the hatch!

Now THAT is sake. Right, guys?

I wouldn't know. I don't like alcohol.

It's kinda funny how that works out, really. Lita likes sweet stuff but hates alcohol. Delsus likes alcohol but hates sweet stuff. And yet they both frequent a bar that serves sweet alcohol. I guess they just can't resist Norman's raw charisma.

I also made a new variant of the Peach Cocktail by combining Tingleberry and Maple Syrup...

This one's called a Tinglecannon.

It would make a nice centerpiece, at the very least.

I'll have a taste of that...

I'll take some buffalo wings and a lando juice, please.

How can you drink juice with buffalo wings!?

What's so weird about it? They taste good! You're eating them with booze!

But that's normal! Buffalo wings were designed for alcohol consumption!

Well I think they were made for everyone to enjoy. I'll eat them how I like!

Let's just drop it, okay?

Well, that's it for Norman's bar for a bit. It looks like I got the public's opinion high enough that they're saying new things, so that's pretty neat. Anyway, let's head to Arcose.

Music: Anchor and Pickaxe

What a coincidence! Hey guys!

Why are you all the way out here, Pamela?

Tee hee...I don't really know.

...There's a shocker.

Something called me to this town. I feel like I'm...needed. So I guess I'll hang around until I figure it out!

Pamela floats away...

We should go find someone who has a clue.

Hey, don't be like that. :(

Let's see...Hute is probably the local expert on Alexia Cave, so let's visit her last and check up on Blaire.

Still haven't learned your lesson? Fine, let's go!

Who are you talking to?

You got here just in time!

Who, me?

Yeah, you!

Uh...the root?

It'd have to be! It's a potato.

Root, meow! I love potatoes!

Of course it's the root...

… …

Well then, it's unanimous. I win again. Looks like this week's bread is mine. Don't look at me like that. This is your fault. How could a potato grow from the flower, anyway? Everyone knows that's silly.

Villa leaves.

How...how come everybody knew that?

She's right...It's kind of common sense.

You were just messing with her, right?

I don't think she knew, meow!

Y-Yes I did! I'm not stupid...

...You must have lived a really sheltered life, growing up.

She sounds like a princess, meow!

...What do you mean, “like”? I'm from a very wealthy upper-class family. Isn't it obvious!?

...Upper class? The bakery?

Just because I work here doesn't mean it's my estate.

I come from a long line of merchants .We're well known on the east coast. But, you probably can't even remember my name, can you?

If your family's so rich, why would you work here?

Yeah, it doesn't make sense.

Hmph! It's not that complicated! I came here to train in the art of superior baking.

Superior baking?

That's enough talking for now! Go ahead and buy something, already.

I tried going for higher quality synthesis of Blaire's current menu as well, but no new scenes unlocked here. Oh well, let's see how Villa's doing I guess.

Hey, do you know anything about the Alexia Cave?

Ewww, no. I've never liked that nasty, muddy place. My sister loves caves, though. You should probably ask her.

She's stubborn, as you may have guessed. But she's not a bad person.

Oh, yeah?

She works at the bakery and pretends it doesn't bother her...but she can't forget about how she used to be rich. Sometimes it makes her really depressed.

So then it's true, about her family?

Oh, did she tell you about that? Hm...she never tells anyone about that. At any rate, she's good at baking bread. Be sure and stop by every so often.

Isn't it a little strange that you're worried about another bakery?

Ummmm, Delsus, Villa runs a grocery store. Big difference.

Anyway, Pamela is actually hanging out in Arcose now. Let's see what she has to say before we go visit Hute.

Huh? What?

Klein, who's that dreamboat with you?

Dreamboat? Are you talking about Arlin?

Arlin...What a strong name...

… …

Umm...Excuse me. Do you think we could go out sometime?

Wow, you don't waste any time at all, do you?

I've loved this man ever since I laid eyes on him!

… ...

Music: A Girl's Memories

Oh...Hundreds of years of growing passion were dashed...just like that!

What!? You've only known him for a few seconds!

Leave me be...my sadness is in full bloom. I'd finally found a handsome ghost, and now -

Ghost?

Arlin's alive, babe. Can't you see his legs?

...Really? Oh, that's weird. I could have sworn...

… ...

Okay. We can date after he becomes a ghost!

...It's good to have dreams, I guess.

Man, Arlin's going to be kicking himself when he dies and can't use the no time excuse to get away from her. Oh wait, he won't even be able to kick himself because ghosts don't have legs. :iamafag:

Hey, do you know anything about the Alexia Cave?

What do you need to know?

And yet another fade out and fade in

Actually, yeah. I heard that a long time ago, the cave was full of Mana. It's dangerous, though. You shouldn't go too far into the cave.

Why's that?

Well, there's actually more to the story. See, a fierce dragon once lived there. The townspeople would offer young girls as a sacrifice to the dragon. Scary, huh?

I saw a strange door in the cave. Do you have a key for it?

I do, but...You're not really planning to go inside the cave, are you?

I'm not a young girl, so it should be fine.

...Okay. I can't say no to you, Klein. Here's the key.

And just like that, we have the means of getting further into the cave. Honestly, I'd be pretty okay with taking Hute's advice and not heading that way, but sadly we kinda have to, so...

Here we are at Alexia Cave's unusual door. Hey, see this save point? Use it.

Video: Seriously, gently caress Delsus

Music: Frozen Lithograph

Brrr...It was so hot outside.

Look at that!

I don't like where this is going.

I suppose that's the dragon from the legend.

Poor bastard...his own cave was too frigid for him.

...I see nothing related to the Eternal Land of Mana.

Relax, we just need to look around.

Meow, it's too cold. I can't even move...

… …?

Why's the ice melting, meow?

MEOW meow meow me-eo-owwwww!

What's going on!?

Whoa...I thought all that dragon stuff was just a legend!

Prepare yourself. It's coming this way.

Music: Duke of Stratosphere

So yeah, this is a pretty strong contender for hardest boss in the game. To be honest, I really should have just opened with Arlin and/or gotten Lita into Murder Mode beforehand, and I might have handled the fight a little more, um, gracefully in that case, but...whatever, let's just get this over with.

To start off, I have Norn pop Magical Shield on everyone. This boosts all defenses, and we'll need all the help we can get there.

Klein is going to spend most of his time healing for this fight, but I try to get him to use the Mark of Courage when I can. Lita's the only one who really needs it since Klein and Norn spend so much time on the defensive, but I tried to get everyone at once via Wide Item when it was convenient.

The dragon (Elder Vilum) doesn't have a whole lot of attacks, but unfortunately all of the attacks he does have are pretty brutal. Flickering Flame is a Double Type attack (that is, charge then release). It does about 50 damage to a character with Norn's shield up, and about 100 to one who does not, which is to say way too goddamn much.

Thus, Klein's role as healer.

Tera Flame (not Terra?) is a little weaker but doesn't need to be charged, so he can just use this whenever and hit my people for 40-90 damage. I mentioned both of these attacks hit everyone, right?

The advantage to having refilled Lita's MP is that she can Jump Kick to her heart's content. I still should have let her MP fall further so her kicks would hit harder, though. Actually, this fight is making me think more about how to manage Lita's MP optimally. It's a real shame that, near as I can tell, the mana bath doesn't have an option to only partially restore her MP, besides perhaps deliberately using an element that you don't have enough of. I'll have to try that out.

As if his offense wasn't problematic enough, the dragon also has a ton of HP AND can inflict paralysis to make my characters' attacks weaker. Of course he nails Lita with this.

Healin', healin', healin'

Another issue in this fight is that my characters end up getting misaligned. I don't think I've really talked about this yet; basically, there are three rows and you can choose where your characters start in battle. Using physical attacks and some abilities typically moves a character forward (Lita), while defending and some other abilities will move your characters back.

The thing is, Tera Flame knocks everyone backward, but then Lita's attacks move her forward again, and so she ends up way in front of Klein and Norn, which means that she's now out of range of Klein's Wide Item when he tried to heal/buff himself or Norn, so I have to choose between healing/buffing my casters or my damage dealer. Of course, I can have Lita defend to move her backward, but then that's a turn spent not attacking, and I get a turn closer to losing my damage or defense buffs, and in the meantime Norn is burning through her MP at an alarming rate because she's using Magical Shield like half the time so Klein has to stop and refill her MP every now and then and what I'm saying is that this fight sucks.

One strategy I've heard is to synth a bunch of Veola's Bomb Armor and use it in this fight. You take damage every turn (10 I think) but your characters get a huge Fire Resist bonus so it's like having Norn's Magical Shield applied all the time. I believe this would get further amplified by Lita's Murder Mode bonuses as well, were she in that state. Sadly, it did not occur to me to try this until after the fight, but I might try it again to see if this makes things go a little better.

So anyway I couldn't buff AND heal Lita in time so she died.

I think I might have said this before, but Arlin's Double skill is not only powerful, it also seems to have a really high chance of Skill Breaking, which is a large part of why I would usually open the fight with him. Getting to override the occasional Flickering Flame is immensely helpful in this battle.

I seem to recall Jump Kick being good for interruption too, but it never worked for me here. Perhaps I was unlucky, or maybe I'm just misremembering.

I swapped out Norn for Delsus because at this point I basically had no idea what to do and I figured I'd try and keep Norn out of the fight a bit while Klein did damage control. Then Klein died.

Then I brought Norn back. Then Norn died.

...But apparently I managed to do well enough that once things started going to poo poo I was able to win a damage race. I am so glad that's over with.

Delsus also nabbed an ability that...well, I don't know if it's properly one of those “half of a double type attack” moves like Lita's normal attack, but the general gist is that using this makes Delsus' next turn come up sooner. I think it's about as powerful as his normal attack and 1 MP is a pittance even for him, so it's pretty neat.

This looks like some kind of mechanism...Hmm...I don't think is works anymore.

Awww...well that ~suuuuucks~. No Eternal Land here, after all!

Delsus! There's something you're not telling us!

I'm not hiding anything. Scout's honor.

Look into my eyes and tell me you're not keeping anything from us.

… …

It's crawling with Mana, right? And there's this little village, Duran. Supposedly there's a tunnel in Duran that leads straight to the Land of Mana.

Why didn't you say that earlier!?

...You didn't ask.

I believe she asked numerous times. In fact, there's probably more you're keeping from us.

...Whatever.

:sigh:

Well of course! Soju is great!

Okay, fine slight tangent: Lemon soju kicks rear end. It tastes like lemonade only with alcohol, so it's light and at the same time intoxicating. When I worked at my old job there was a Korean BBQ place which had one of those an it was amazing. I ordered a pitcher every time I came.
There's also yoghurt soju, which sounds weird but is also quite good. It's kinda like a milkshake only with alcohol. Not as good as the lemon, but also pretty good.

Using a mana type you only have a partially filled bar of works for the mana bath, or at least it's the only way I ran into that worked; though to be honest after I figured out there were no real negative effects for it I just left her bottomed out so she could keep Murder Mode up full time, it stacks rather brutally with Double Attack/Pierce/Battle Protect mods.

I never tried it myself, but I've heard Norn's Mana Shield stacks on itself. And each new stack refreshes the duration of all the other stacks on the pile. I've heard it can get quite silly.

As for Mana Stones, you don't always want to go by what sounds like the best combo; Uru might turn those reds into Fire Res better than another mana can, but Diemia can turn those into Spd+1, which are a lot more useful. I'd suggest some combos, but right now all the good stuff would involve a lot of mods you'd only have a 50% chance per stone of getting; there's a way to boost a lot of that to 100% later on, if one wishes to avoid tedious savescumming.
