It was nice of Tom to let Richard Blais know that Mei's dessert was the best he's ever had, since he said the same thing about Blais' banana scallops a few years ago. By the way did you guys know Mei works for Voltaggio and Gregory had a drug problem? Can't fault the ending, Mei seemed like the winner and it was probably not that close. Still, a good set of competitors this season, only 1 rear end in a top hat and a bunch of really classy, talented people. Rumor is next season will take place in Nashville, TN. Eater has good pics of the 8 plates if you were curious http://www.eater.com/2015/2/12/8024659/top-chef-boston-season-12-finale-winner-recap

It's too bad this thread has died. I thought that was a great finale, and as soon as the blonde got the axe, a great season. Maybe not on par with 6, but the talent at the end was very, very strong. The sudden death quickfire gimmick was terrible, but then, I am so glad that George got a second shot; he was my early pick. No bullshit challenges and a ton of judges' tables that were like, "Crap. They all did well. This sucks." It's has just been a blast to watch.

I really enjoyed the finale as well. I disliked Mei right up to the episode where she cooked with her brother, and then her demeanor/braggadocio made a lot of sense to me. I enjoyed the facade dropping as soon as she was named winner. Her menu is also the one I'd prefer to order, if going in blind to the resultant quality of cooking... although I wouldn't say no to Greg's short ribs any day.

I'm still enjoying this show, and thought the finale was great, even if the thread is a ghost town. It's just nice to watch talented people do things well!

I'm a little disappointed that the thread wasn't more active, but I chalk that up largely due to people who stopped watching during the Texas and Seattle seasons, and hadn't really got back on board after the end of New Orleans. I also liked this season overall, but haven't been keeping the OP updated as well as I should have been (in part because I wasn't always current with the show myself). I'm glad that Mei won, but would have been happy with any of the last 4-5 winning, really.

I think there also wasn't a lot of talk because there was so little drama. This season really was just a lot of really talented chefs cooking really good food. There can't be a whole lot to discuss beyond, "That all looked tasty. These are really all talented people acting like professionals."

Decent season since fratbro and blondie both got the boot relatively early. A shame that Gregory messed up on his second and third courses, otherwise I think the finale would have been a lot closer. It was pretty clear that Mei had won despite Tom's obligatory "Oh man this is a really hard decision" comments. The lack of thread activity is understandable since the Texas season was terrible and last season was pretty bad as well. They seem to have taken some lessons from that though, and there weren't many dumb gimmicks this season besides Doug getting stiffed with the ant eggs. I think Mei earned the win. Maybe her parents will acknowledge her existence now.

Grantland's solution to fixing Top Chef: Add that vainglorious melodramatic flatbiller piece of poo poo Roy Choi to the judging lineup. http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/how-wed-fix-it-a-four-step-recipe-for-restoring-top-chef-to-glory/ I think the most notable thing about this season is how invisible it was. Not just on here either. It has stopped existing online to anyone but the most dedicated viewer and the viewer that does not care at all but wants to stare at moving pictures. There is zero buzz. shadow puppet of a fucked around with this message at 23:09 on Feb 13, 2015 |

I stopped watching after Double Voltaggio vs. Goon. Did it ever get better than that season?

marsisol posted:I stopped watching after Double Voltaggio vs. Goon. Nope. The Texas season had Paul--possibly the most skilled contestant the show has ever had--but that was brought down by the entire season being primarily comprised of idiotic bullshit challenges. Chipping ingredients out of blocks of ice. Multiple catering challenges for hundreds of people. Riding a bike aimlessly around a city trying to beg a restaurant owner to let them borrow kitchen space. Private-cheffing for self-help book-writing, giant-gummy-bear-loving bougie manchildren. That kind of poo poo.

Yes, there is always going to be those dispshit celebrities like "Gronk" flirting with Padma, Zooey some-perfume-last-name with stupid dietary restrictions, etc. But gently caress that guy. "Yo, dude, you tried really hard but being from LA I know seafood and this wasn't up to par." "Yo, homie, I appreciate the attempt, but even though you are from Mexico, this isn't al pastor. I know, because I am from LA." "Girl, you know this french cuisine isn't right, I live in LA, just a short drive up to SF where some of the best French-trained chef's reside, and they wouldn't like this." "You know what, contestant, I am going to act all hard, and ghetto, hence this m'loving hat, and poo poo on whatever you do, ROY CHOI! BITCHES!" gently caress that guy,

Texas kind of killed the show for me. Even though this season was Boston I only kept it at arm's length. Maybe watching a bit here or there. I just got tired of the bullshit.

I'm just glad they stopped with the SWOOSH transition between shots of contestants. That grated me to no end.

If Roy was challenged by a contestant or Hugh he step to them, micro-lats splayed and ask "Did I stutter?" Padma would have to step her critique game up at judges table or risk Roy challenging her speech patterns. Something needs to shake the show out of its American-Idol like death spiral. Lots of Roy Choi/Poochie could be the ticket.

For me this has been one of the strongest seasons so far. I liked both Mei and Gregory and they all did a fantastic job, although the few mistakes Gregory made were more serious and this is what cost him the title. However, I think Gregory pushed the boundaries more in the finale, going native with the ingredients so respect to him in that regard. Relatively little drama, strong chefs, good challenges, excellent food. This is what Top Chef is all about.

I just wish Food Network Canada (Top Chef isn't on Bravo Canada) would air the show same day as it does in the US. oneof27 posted:I think there also wasn't a lot of talk because there was so little drama.
