Don't what all this poo poo is about some webcomic, I'm just enjoying a promising Dadnime dealing with complex parenting issues.

I'm quietly optimistic about this - Log Horizon tried playing with the MMO schtick by having someone break the game's systems, but I think the whole villain/final boss thing is an equally interesting angle.

I really liked how brutal that death knight was, and it was a lot bigger then I expected when I saw it fighting those knights. In the book the magic mirror scene lasts a bit longer cause he's trying all kinds of random hand movements to try and get it do something else. Also you get a bit more world building with the village chief and our Undad Overlord talking about various things.

All in all though I quite enjoyed this episode.

Here is the appropriate quote from the light novel regarding death knights:

This was one of Momonga’s special abilities, the creation of undead monsters. The Death Knight was one of Momonga’s favorite creatures since it was very useful as a shield.

With a level around 35, its strength would be equal to a level 25 monster, but its defensive power was very good, comparable to a level 40 monster. For Momonga, a monster like that was very useful.

However, the Death Knight had two very important special skills.
One was the ability to attract the attacks of an enemy. The other one could be used only once, but it would always survive one lethal attack as long as it had a certain amount of HP left. Because of these two special skills, Momonga enjoyed using Death Knights as a shield.

The creation of zombies from enemies it kills is not an 'important' special skill it has for momonga. To him, the defensive properties are why he uses it.
Another thing is that YGGDRASIL gold is more valuable than kingdom gold by over twice as much.

All spells in the game are on a 1-10 ranking system. In the light novel, Momonga says that he never uses any spells at a level less than 8 when fighting opponents with levels close to his.

Another scene from the village chief talk in the light novel that is interesting is that momonga realizes that they are not speaking Japanese based on how their mouth was moving.
The appropriate quote from the light novel:

In conclusion, it appeared the people of this world once ate some kind of food called ‘Translation Konjac’. It was just that there was no idea who fed it to them.
It seemed like the languages of this world would be translated automatically before it was transmitted to the other person.
So, if everyone was able to understand each other, then it should be possible to speak to other species as well. Such as talking to dogs or cats. The only problem was that nobody knew who made it this way. But for some reason, the Village Chief didn’t think that this was strange in any way.
As if it was something completely ordinary.
——In other words, this was the common sense of this world. Thinking calmly about it, since this was a magical world, the fact that there would be a completely different common sense wasn’t strange at all.

Another part omitted is during the funeral, the 'invisible monsters' that Momonga requested before he left arrived, and a representative one comes to speak with him for further orders:

Ainz looks around him. The villagers do not seem to have noticed. For now let’s disregard Albedo. If you saw such a Magical Being, even if you were in the middle of a funeral, it’s still something you would normally stare at.

But then he suddenly remembered that Eight-legged Spiderblade Assassins belonged to the kind of Magical Beings that were able to render themselves invisible.
"He wanted to pay his respects to Ainz-sama, so I brought him over."
"It is a great honor to meet Momonga-sama——"
"——No need for courtesies. You are from the back-up troops right?"
"Yes, apart from me we have prepared four hundred servants to attack this village."
Attack? How did it turn out like this? Ainz couldn’t help himself and thought—— Sebastian really has no talent for delivering messages.

"... There’s no need to attack, the problem has already been resolved. Who is commanding you?"
"Aura-sama and Mare-sama. Demiurge-sama and Shalltear-sama are on alert inside Nazarick, and Cocytus-sama is patrolling the area around Nazarick."

Well it looks like Sebas will feature heavily later on. But when your main character is the end boss you can't really just focus on him for everything, it'd either be too easy or he'd be fighting with other end bosses ad nauseum.

In so far as the two settings have a very similar basic premise (RPG Mechanics make up the rules of world) it's certainly appropriate to bring up and reference, you're being very silly by freaking out over it. If we really want a webcomic that's maybe even more apropos there's also 8-bit theater with Momonga being very Red Mage this episode in trying to figure out how powerful he is.

That mask is a good mask. The content of this episode was a little cleaned up in a good way so I have high hopes for the rest of it getting a good treatment. I was worried everything would be toned down, even the completely appropriate violence, but it was suitably brutal.

So far there's been no concrete spoilers outside of spoiler tags and I hope it stays that way. There's no novel/manga thread though, so I'd be a bit worried.

Volume 5 may be a drag so far but I had a bit of it spoiled for myself so there's at least going to be a little bit of fun and some important world building. The translator keeps a consistent pace, though, and he's sped up considerably from doing 1-2 parts of a chapter each week to entire chapters, so I'm okay with it.

If it's just the light novel readers filling in extra facts and stuff from the novel as the episodes come out, I'm totally cool with it. They're pretty interesting! They just can't get ahead of themselves and start posting a lot of spoilers before the events air in the anime.

Yeah, I like hearing what went down in the light novels as long as it doesn't get ahead of the anime, I doubt I'll ever check them out and it's interesting to hear what was included and excluded. This show is definitely right up my alley with its nerding out about the details of currency conversion, and I'm also trying to crack a story that would involve a really powerful character and the more overpowered crazy stuff I can see while I do so the better. It's fun to see a mix of ReMonster and Log Horizon around, I'm looking forward to seeing where it all goes.

So yeah, more summaries of what changed in the adaptation please, and if you want to put stuff from later in the light novels in spoiler tags I don't see the problem.

Ditto.

I really like the idea behind this series, and I'm a huge sucker for MC's who theorize and experiment on their new powers in depth. So far the only thing I think is lacking is the interaction between Momoga and the rest of the the cast, he's kinda isolating himself by trying to act like a leader to them at all times, and in turn they're idolizing him as infallible and unapproachable, and both of those are boring. That wasn't so bad the first two episodes, cause those weren't the only kind of interactions they had, but it was in this episode and I'm hoping that it's the exception rather than the norm.

Very minor spoilers: Yes/no on the isolation of himself thing. He feels like if he doesn't lead them then they may grow dissatisfied/be left adrift in a world that's not their own. They interact a lot when they're together but its more like he's trying to keep his family strong while (potentially) conquering the world. They never stop idolizing him but none of them are paper cutouts, they all have distinct(relatively robust too) personalities and times when they shine/have the limelight.

Eh, I think just Albedo tagging along was perfectly fine. All he was going to do was test if his powers still worked against a relatively small group of mere human knights. Bringing along the whole retinue would be just throwing gasoline on the fire and tip his hand to everyone who witnessed it. Not to mention trying to keep them all from probably razing the village instead of rescuing it.

I also liked that his mask was just some dinky cosmetic holiday reward :allears:.

It's probably a aggro-reset spell. Everquest is a good example of a real life game where such a spell would be useful since you can attack any NPC, even ones in your home city. But in this "real world" it does more.

This is like how in the Forgotten Realms novels when Mystra died (again) and magic went from 3.5e to 4.0e all the various Wizards spent some time trying to figure out how their spells were different (the ones who didn't get the spellplague anyways).

A lot of asian MMOs have a mind/soul manipulating caster class. Illusions, status effects and straight up controlling mobs tend to be common among them. Add that control undead is a super common thing in fantasy and it's not a completely insane thing to be threatened by.

Crowd control, aggro reduction, I can think of a number of spell types that could be characterized as memory manipulation. We already know that spells have changed in various ways with whatever happened when the servers shut down so it's not exactly a stretch to think that some spells will have changed to better fit their flavor text and such.

Could also be a thing if the game has any Dark Souls like elements like perma-aggroing NPC characters by attacking them (although in that game it's handled by another NPC). I was really glad that game had a way of resetting NPC disposition after I hilariously managed to accidentally stab Solaire in the loving back.

Since this MMO seems to be sort of like Second Life with less dicks and more fantasy mixed with D&D or maybe a bit of Neverwinter Nights (seriously, since I played on persistent worlds in that game, I notice a ton of parallels in how the anime operates and how you could program your own worlds into NWN), it could be that the spells were given written effects, so crush heart would be a save versus die spell and memory wiping would be a DM-level spell to reset faction reputations to prevent shop keepers from attacking you and the like.
