I'm like 95% certain that The Monster is going to be humanity or something stupid. Also, the subReddit dedicated to the 10CL ARG just fell apart. It's at the climactic moment of the ARG where it starts meaning something, and two of the players were just given a phone number and a set of coordinates. The users that received them are keeping them secret so that they don't get "flooded with people" ah ha ha ha ha "Don't worry guys we will post everything we learn though"

Lol. The director did an AMA and confirmed that the "Cloverfield universe" is a universe and not a timeline. People asked what the heck he meant, and he said it's like how every Twilight Zone sketch takes place in the same universe (Rod Serling's room), but not the same timeline (the last-man-on-earth with glasses could never meet the gremlin-on-the-wing guy). Also confirming that the Cloverfield monster does not appear in the movie and its rampage of NYC is not mentioned or alluded to. The Cloverfield monster deserves success! Looks like I'm about to finish my long over due ending to my Cloverfield monster story... Basically ends like

There has to be a little bit more connective tissue than just the name, I mean Twilight Zone had Rod in each episode. What I am saying is the Cloverfield Monster is going to introduce this

So it's a cash in is what you're saying
|
# ? Mar 8, 2016 23:43 |

There might still be like some strong thematic ties or some poo poo that makes it seem like its not but yeah they probably just attached the name to this to get in making that sweet sweet cash. But that is OK, it looks like a good movie still and I could see them saying "well this looks like its good, nobody will probably watch it though which is a shame, oh throw this name on it"

I dunno, I am all for doing franchises that are just connected by theme instead of a shared universe or whatever. Like that might actually be a way to help movies that wouldn't be made now cause studios are focusing on the big blockbuster everything is connected movie.

But they should have tried to clue people in on this way earlier.

The idea of a thematic connection is neat but Cloverfield is so identified by the monster rather than the themes that billing itself with the Cloverfield name is just gonna set expectations that can't be met.

# ? Mar 8, 2016 23:56 |

I mean I think there's roughly a zero percent chance this won't be better than the original Cloverfield but then I thought the original sucked and so far the only two things we know about the movie - it's not found footage and it has John Goodman - are steps in the right direction

Yeah, really this. What exactly are the themes of Cloverfield that could be carried over to a movie like this anyways? Fear of something just out of sight? ARGs that were completely dropped? Shakycam motion sickness? We don't know enough it to really assign it much of a theme. This is now a 'maybe when it's on netflix or something' movie.

No longer seeing it in theaters out of spite. If they hadn't marketed it as connected to Cloverfield , I definitely would have went because it does look like an interesting film outside of its cash grab title.

I'm at least not seeing it until I know there ties - or lack thereof - to the first movie, because gently caress this annoying purposely confusing marketing.

Im gonna go see it as a double date this weekend. Basically, the only way It can live up to any hype is if all the trailers are the first 20 minutes and the remainder of the film is her running away from horrible monsters on the surface, i.e. Lisa Simpson on Monster Island

Hey guys, I'm pleased to announce my new film 26 Godzilla Avenue. It's the thrilling story of a group of strangers who find themselves trapped in an elevator during an earthquake. What, you're upset that there's no Godzilla in it, and no monster of any kind? Well, I never said it was a Godzilla sequel, you moron! The two are obviously connected because they're both thrilling and scary! See, we're building a new universe of Godzilla films which are totally unrelated but are connected by being thrilling and scary, because how would you know the story is thrilling and scary otherwise? Hope you enjoy the film!
