You ever have that feeling like there is meaning in words that you can't quite arrive at? There's something like that at the end of A Scanner Darkly where Donna brings Bob into the new path clinic and the nurses working there call him a loser so she retorts "It's easy to win, anybody can win." and every time I arrive there I feel like there's something there I can't quite see. I could of course interpret that line all sorts of ways, it's not like I'm saying it's unintelligible, but I never feel like I've fully arrived at an answer. I guess that's life, right.

I think the answer is to put the book down and keep quiet about it, because what's a grown person doing reading books designed to trick children into being christians?

Orwell loved fighting the good fight and being man of the people and all that, but if you ever read his collected papers it becomes readily apparent he couldn't stand actually being with common folk. Also, a genuine hatred of the gays. Would still suggest a read though.

Ok, class. We've just finished our discussion about racial stereotyping in Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days, now everybody get in a circle so we can all pat each other on the back for not being racists because we're drat sure not going to do anything else with this information. Thank goodness we've all reassured each other and ourselves that, although we consume, enjoy and encourage the distribution of media with racist elements, we are not racists and thus superior to the ignorant, benighted people of previous generations who didn't know any better.

I'm guessing Kurt Vonnegut is considered extremely problematic nowadays since he was a huge proponent of humanism. Everyone knows it's not right to try and treat everybody equally and with compassion, we've got to separate people into strictly divided racial and cultural groups so we don't accidentally end up appropriating or erasing them!

Uneducated Reader: Man, those swarthy Southrons in Lord of the Rings sure are bad... Makes me kind of wonder about the swarthy foreigners in my own hometown. Could they be allied with an evil sorcerer? Smart Liberal Arts Major: Actually Tolkien's decision to portray the only dark-skinned humans in his setting as allies of the ultimate evil was problematic and almost certainly based on his personal prejudices. Newly-enlightened Reader: Oh! Well thank goodness you told me when you did, before I turned into a racist!

They fail to understand that the orc his simply a characterization of how British conservatives view anybody who disagrees with them.
