Real career advice needed here:

I make good enough money in construction right now, and I really like my company, but I want to be welding so badly. I'm so close to taking up one of those traveling, temporary welding assignments.
The only thing holding me back is that I want to have my welding degree in hand, but I won't have that for another year. I have enough credits for an associate's degree in "general studies" or something like that if I take one more writing class. My fiance is down for it because the money is amazing enough for a house downpayment and then some, my favorite instructor told me to do it if I need a job and wanted fat cash, my brother in law who did these types of jobs on oil rigs is encouraging me to do it if don't piss my money away, and I need some welding experience on my resume somehow, but I'm still apprehensive about the whole thing
Two of the presentations I've heard say that they'll certify you on location, but it sounds sketchy as. Maybe wait until late spring so I can get my first level welding certification and an associate's degree, then drive off to Kentucky/Texas/Utah/wherever they send me for 6-9 months of +$40 an hour work? I don't know what I should do

I'm going to have a real discussion about this with the missus tomorrow, but I need all the advice I can get

You don't necessarily have to go off-shore or on oil rigs or some poo poo, despite what everyone says about "no jerbs in 'Merica" or whatever, there's plenty of manufacturers where welding is needed. My friend has been at the same places for like five years or so now. All he had to do was not gently caress up, fail drug tests, start fights, or be a jackass, and now he's pretty much the shop lead and he just pokes buttons welding machines or laser cutting tables for buckets of money.

The thing is with the LS is that tires make such a huge difference with the car, it can dramatically change how the car drives from one tire to the next, cheap tires generally do not do well on these cars, so I'm probably just going to spend the money and get Michelins.

I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric All seasons on my LS460, and I've been very happy with them. I thought about summer tires (F1 Asymmetric 3), but the LS460 is such a pig (~1000 lbs more than my LS400) I was worried I'd trash them in no time. I have the same tires on my GS430 and I have no complaints there either.

Got my Brother HL-L3290CDW color laser printer/scanner today.

Hooked it up to my wlan pretty much effortlessly, W10 automatically located it on my network and installed it seamlessly. Printed test pages from both mine and wifes' PCs, looks great. It's so nice having Windows actually do something easily for once and not need to install the OEM bloatware to actually print/scan anything.

I am not missing anything by not installing the Brother bloatware... am I?? :ohdear:

So far so good, thanks for the recommendations for Brother.

No offshore for me, but basically all of these companies are building oil pipelines or massive infrastructure projects that don't happen in my state that's withering on the vine. It's the fun circle of "no experience, no job" unless I get certified for most of the Chicagoland area. But even then, the pay for a level 2 TIG welder is worse than what I make starting as an unskilled laborer in construction, or even what I made as a server

Applebee’s; for tires get the Continental DWS; you might be able to get just the DW (DryWet) version since you get no snow. They were so good on my Mazda6; incredibly good on our Ecoboost Flex.

To the goon referencing the PS4S. Those are high performance summer tires. The mileage life out if those is not good; but they are incredible tires. I have them on my M3 and they are the most perfect summer street tire.

You won't be able to initiate a scan from the printer itself, you'll have to do it from the PC. May not be able to do duplexing without the Brother drivers either, but that part is foggy.

You can change a lot more settings with the software installed, from the PC anyway (you can change them via the web interface or the control panel, it just takes a lot more digging). The Brother software is pretty unintrusive to be honest.

But yeah - really no reason in this day and age of cheap, fast storage and memory to not install drivers and utilities from a reputable manufacturer.

Imagine driving a 458 with a manual gearbox, it would be a miserable experience. Even a 430 with a manual is a chore to drive and and the automated manual 'F1' box is a huge improvement. As cars get faster and faster you have less and less time to think and carry out what you need to do to get the car around the track. Most people, including me, are not hotshot racing drivers and freeing yourself of one of the tasks necessary to driving the car makes the performance so much more accessible to the average user

I could also believe a loose connection.

I don't have the electronic climate control, just aircon in mine. Mine has a couple of bulbs behind the knobs that don't always light up immediately when I start the car. but usually kick in by the time I get out of my road. If I hit the panel a few times after turning it on they will start working properly. After a daily beating for the last year they now sometimes work properly for a week or two.

I wonder if the same technique will work on my stop/start that also doesn't work. Perhaps I should remove the battery sensor and try dropping it on the floor or just hitting it.

I'm just not that bothered about having the optimum performance over having something involving/interesting to drive. Modern autos are really good, but it's still disappointing when there's no option given.

Yeah, I'll have a look at the weekend if I can. I had a similar issue back when I had the Jeep, it was a known problem on those that the max current draw to the fan would melt the electrical connector plug to it!

As much as I will not own another Italian car in my life again because of the rest of the the garbage around them, coming in hot and banging down 5-4-3-2 with a proper double declutch and heel / toe is a goddamn experience no loving flappy paddle gets close to. People are funny about manuals. I cared about it more when I was younger but don't feel that it adds anything to my driving experience when I just get on the highway and go to work 99% of the time. :v: It's going to do the job better and faster than I would, and I don't need to take a hand off the wheel to get it done. On a racetrack that's never felt particularly great (taking hand off wheel) even if you're braking and downshifting in a straight line, but you have to upshift through curvy stuff at times. I'd take a good DCT any day. It's the best of both worlds, IMO. :colbert:

I will say however that I don't like the auto in my Odyssey as I can feel the torque converter locking and unlocking frequently and it drives me a little crazy.
