I've been having a lot of fun with Shotel Warrior rushes as Ethiopians in ranked games recently. On any maps that are reasonably wallable, I go for a militia rush to slow them down then a fast castle with enough stone to immediately drop a castle in my base to help defend myself. I aim for ~20 Shotel warriors from the castle and keep them out of sight. Since they only take 8 seconds to make at first you get up to 20 in less than 3minutes. Get a couple of armour upgrades + arson for bonus building damage while they're massing, then try to sneak them out the back of my base and into the back or side of the opponents. Doesn't always work, but people feel pretty secure having houses or barracks as parts of their wall. The shotels are super fragile but very fast and have basically as much attack as an elephant. A small group of them can take out a house or military building in maybe 5 seconds and then I beeline straight for the town centre. If you get all of them underneath and start attacking before they even get villagers inside, it can easily be half dead before it even starts shooting and then goes down in under 10 seconds. When it works it's extremely funny and they can easily run down fleeing villagers, or some can split off and start taking out other production buildings in the base. They can't survive under castle fire, but if you find anywhere exposed it's very satisfying. Haven't tried taking out a castle with them, but if they don't have murder holes it would probably work too. This works great early castle age when people are expecting the usual crossbows or similar, but they're a good side raiding distraction any time during the game. Especially at the point where they create in 3 seconds down from 8, it's just not sustainable for too long with the cost.

This game's popularity has been going up slowly for years and the DE has been huge. My only con is that this game is difficult to play at a good level and multiplayer looks daunting to get in for many people, including me. I have an old man's arthrithic hands and I'm chronically bad at multitasking, so I'm content to just watch on youtube and twitch. EDIT: Although the problem with DE is that it has split the community a bit, some players just won't switch from the HD version because DE has pretty high system reqs. I'm in a similar spot. Watch the streams to chill, and while the game is really fun and rewarding to play it's also kind of stressful, so I am often not in the mood to play at all. Checked out C&C remaster, but IMO that game has not aged well at all in comparison to SC:BW and AoE2.

For the people that are stressed etc, seriously i would dip your toes in by just playing co op against the PC with friends. Hell, or even ONLY doing that. its still fun. theres no reason to go head to head with somebody just because other people enjoy it!

Yeah one thing about DE that has impressed me, taking it as a fresh game because I've never played AOE before, is that from campaigns to coop to scenarios, there is a pretty huge amount of single player content accumulated from previous editions to play through if you don't care for competitive multiplayer.

I can understand not wanting to play because of stress but anyone who refuses on account of fear should watch more Low elo legends. "This guy's 900 elo? Really?" is a great quote from T90 on the subject. Honestly you'll probably have a better win rate against bad players than the comp

Played my first online match yesterday. Map was Arena. I managed to punch a whole in their wall, but then the other player built an unbroken line of archery ranges up to my base, where they built a castle and a siege workshop that blocked one of my gates, then trebuchet'd me into oblivion. Predictable but not a bad time. Reminded me of the old Brood War tactic of building Protoss turrets in the enemy base.

I just watched a TheViper's game in his youtube channel playing Ethiopians and it was pretty great, jesus christ mass heavy scorpions with torsion engines are one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen.

Totally had no idea there was a thread for DE, the last active Age thread was in GBS and it's had a few years without any posts, glad to see other goons enjoying the game. Is there a goon group that plays together? Would love to play some ranked team games, I'm at 1500 TG ELO and 1100 1v1 ELO, I just don't play that often because 1v1 is still daunting as hell and TGs with randos is pain.

Glad to see they buffed condos as they are the most fun infantry (and team unit) to play with IMO. I missed the golden days of full power Vikings condo spam, especially when there was a miscalculation in HD that made Viking condos 97 HP instead of 96 which is actually really significant. Dunno if that still exists in DE though, never checked.
