not been dootin for a while, got new kittens and they keep me very busy. they love the synth and sit on me whenever i make a noise. tonight i patched up a drone and just sat with cats on me for something like 30 minutes, unable to touch the rack without disturbing their enjoyment.

I was messing around with generating melody sequences by feeding gates into mixers with the faders set at random levels, then into a quantizer. I had an oscillator going into a wavefolder and straight to the output mixer. I put a bit of slow modulation on the wavefolder and waveshape controls on the oscillator. While I listened to the result, it kind of had the sound of bagpipes to me. In particular, some of the notes sounded like grace note trills, so I cobbled the rest of a voice together from a rough idea of what pipes sound like, and vague memories of having looked up some pipe music. Anyone know what pipe tuning is supposed to be? I guess I could look it up again, but I went with A Major, 4 slightly detuned drone oscillators, tuned up 1 and 2 octaves from the chanter, and using the same slow modulation on their waveform controls, so I get a changing timbre on the drones. I wanted to get the vocal sample to sound like it was being spoken softly just behind each ear alternating left and right if you were wearing headphones, but I don't have the audio engineering skills to figure out how to do that. I might go back and try a chorus effect instead of auto-pan and monkey around with it a bit more, but probably will just end up making it worse, so at least I've got it somewhat there. I was also thinking about maybe adding a 303-esque bass line in the middle section. |

Nysthi has a bunch of modules in vcv rack for free that do spacial and temporal things with the stereo field if you want something to try processing that stem with. There are a number of sample players and recorders, so you can play a wave into a chain of fx or whatever and record the output as a new wav. They make it pretty simple, no need to know specifics, just plug and tweak. i made an oscillator out of an Arduino Nano a while back, but I stopped using it because i have plenty of other oscs. also it was a bit fucky, the pots are lovely or something. so last night i wrote new software for it so now it's a really crunchy noise source. this is not a doot so much as a journey into nasty sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAND1-NH6Xo (recorded with telephone for extra crapness)

I went to a synthesizer store in Seattle called Patchwerks today. It was like the Wayne's World guitar store scene. Almost everything you could want to play all hooked up and ready to play. It was awesome to check out stuff in person and get hands on with stuff only previously seen in youtube reviews. Some stuff that looks cool is actually lovely to play, and some stuff that I thought might be kind of meh was like ohhh right, this is actually really useful. It took a great deal of self control not to walk out several thousand dollars poorer, but now I have a priority list and Christmas wish list for Santa. Things that are awesome: Erica Synths LXR-02 drum machine. For a total noob to drum machines, I was instantly able to make really good sounding drum sequences. It is very intuitive and small enough that it could live on my Virus and midi sync to it. Number one on my wishlist. Moog Subsequent 25. Fat as hell and easy to use, makes great noises. I think it needs an external sequencer of some kind so you can play a loop while knob twiddling. ASM Hydrasynth. A little complicated, but once I got my head around it, the workflow was pretty straightforward and intuitive. Really great arpeggiator. Yamaha Reface DX. Looks like a toy, but super easy to fiddle with and make cool FM synthesis sounds. Better than you'd think it is. Things I didn't like so much: Everything by Elektron. Awful clicky buttons and you can't just look at it and figure out how it works. Roland stuff: lots of flashy, colorful, blinky LEDs which appeals to me, but then you try and use it and it's like 'this is garbage'. There's loads of modular stuff there too, but that's not my bag so I didn't fiddle with any of it. |

I hear yah about elektron stuff. Doesn't make any sense to me, and doesn't look like the way I want to make doots. But, modular on the other hand.... I have a lot more fun plugging in patch cables than playing keys.
