I imagine it must be a poor 90s kid hobby. Even though I always thought fancy gym shoes looked stupid, I wanted them because all the cool kids in k-8 had them, and so it was intensely embarrassing that my mom was buying me the Big Lots poverty specials. I can imagine someone who never moved past it getting his own money and being like “Now I can have ALL the stupidest looking footwear!” thinking he can fill the hole in his psyche with DJ Khaled Air Jordans or whatever.
