14th amendment says that she's going to be shut down, hard. "No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States... ...or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof." She was literally found guilty of aiding the enemy.

I'm for whistleblowing in general and think Chelsea's punishment was gross and overzealous but I never really liked her as a person because she didn't have and rhyme or reason in the stuff she leaked and instead just released a bunch of stuff that could jeopardize innocent lives into the wind during a temper tantrum. Like if there were a concrete goal or situation she was trying to shed light on I'd be more sympathetic but it really looked like she was just generically upset with her superiors and did a bunch of dangerous stuff that could have potentially affected a bunch of unrelated people when she was lashing out like a child. Whether or not you agree with him snowden at least was trying to expose something specific and not just making it rain with classified documents.

Chelsea Manning is an American hero. Whistleblowers are the only true way we can preserve what little transparency this government has left. If you want a free press, you want to support whistleblowers, because that's how the actual news gets broken.

Given that, smash-and-grabbing as much as you can and leaking it to journalists to sort out is a reasonable thing to do, especially considering her chances of leaking it without being caught were nil anyway I guess that's fair, the reality that she knew enough wrong was going on that an indiscriminate approach was reasonable is a p good argument. I guess i just find something distasteful about going into it blindly over personal squabbles that makes me not want to idolize what she did, whereas something targeted with clear goals is an idea I'd completely support. Motives are imo an important part of judging someone's action. basic hitler posted:her motives matter little, nothing could possibly justify what was done to her in retaliation. win or lose, chelsea running for the senate is a significant moment in american political history, and, whatever our political persuasion, ought to be recognised for her bravery. but we should also not forget chelseas forebears in the suffragette movement, but for whose courage, determination and sacrifice chelsea would not be able even to cast a solitary vote, let alone run for public office.

I support the hell out of him. Manning? By all accounts Manning had a bad day and send some classified poo poo as a gently caress you to her bosses, not some ethical move in an impossible situation that pretty much ended her life. I am all for whistle blowing. I think it's important. But so are the reasons and everything I've heard about Manning's reasons and how she handled it screams rear end in a top hat, unlike Snowden who screams "well thought out crisis of ethics." I don't know how anyone could want Snowden's head on a plate while OK with Manning running for Senate and a lot of people sure as hell won't be down with that, just on that one issue before anything else.
