why the gently caress would the "mainstream" not accept tarantino for making someone drive a car against their will (?? from what I gather the accusations are) when they're perfectly fine with a literal child rapist

Uma Thurman still likes Tarantino, so he'll be fine, even if he said some dumb poo poo about Polanski. Maureen Dowd just went after him a bit and some other people are piling on, but it'll blow over fast.

Filmmakers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision. It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him.

I really hope that a lot of the people who signed this did so because of the use of the event to apprehend him and not because they think a child-rapist should be forgiven because he makes good movies. It's pretty disgusting to see how many people have continued to work with him.

Aside from his art, I think the circumstances of Polanski's life probably made him more sympathetic to a lot of people than just some guy would have been. Surviving the Holocaust and having his pregnant wife murdered by the Manson Family certainly qualifies him as having a tragic backstory.

I'm not ignoring it; we all know who made the work. The art still stands on its own though. I wouldn't work with him or fund his projects, but I'm not going to feel personally responsible for his crimes if I watch one of his movies, any more than I feel responsible for Jefferson raping his slaves because I read the Declaration of Independence. I guess everyone gets to decide where they personally want to draw the line though.

I agree with that. I just think the conversation should be more along the lines of ""Roman Polanski is a great artist who deserves all the acclaim he gets for his art, but depriving ourselves of the future works he will create is worth it in the name of justice." The fact that imprisoning him, as is morally necessary, will prevent those future works from ever existing puts the lie to the "death of the artist" argument. I feel like trying to pretend like his works exist in a state divorced from the man himself only serves to obscure that central moral choice which we have to learn to make.

They all have the same loving excuse. It really annoyed me at the time they'd all defend him with this logic, so the fact that suddenly someone has been called out for it.. well I'd find it immensely amusing if the fire spread a bit. I'd be down for dousing it a bit with gasoline, even.

because he is an easy target. he is weird probably autistic rear end in a top hat who jerks it to feet, screams insanely at fans in public and makes well done violent movies that i tend to love. Polanski makes oscar bait and hosed a child in the rear end because he didnt have the decency to get gutted with his wife by the Manson clan. tarantino was already on thin ice for while and after thurman talked about how he was a weird autistic with her and led to her getting hosed up in stunt accident, people were looking for #metoo moment and they found him defending that degenerant like idiot he is. the other actors are "woke" and or liked enough so they arnt touched. personalty, Polanski should be gelded. and gently caress tarantino for defending him.

In a broad sense probably everyone deserves sympathy for being a person who's going to die, but specifically I think Holocaust survivors and people whose spouses are horribly murdered probably deserve a bit of extra sympathy, though again I don't think that means it should be a get out of rape free card. His victim obviously deserves both sympathy and justice, and would continue to deserve both even if she grew up to be a monster herself.

The odd part about like the Bowie thing is the girl in that case to this day insists she wanted it, and has fond memories of all that poo poo hosed up as it is. I think that's why it's easier for people to accept that as a "product of the time," but Polanski was like "Oh you said no? Here, have some drugs. Still saying no? Have some booze with those drugs. Can't say no? Oh poo poo, she woke up still saying no and begging me to stop. Who cares?"

It's a two layered cake of bullshit but I think what makes the difference to people is if the girl was 30, it'd been fine. If the girl with Polanski was 30 it'd still be hosed up super rape.
