I had a co-worker who loved Nirvana and the bands that followed them in the mid 90's. I blew his mind when I played Helter Skelter for him. He agreed it was it was grunge twenty years before grunge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWW2SzoAXMo Anyways, some classics, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEXoQbxy8sI Light My Fire isn't great because of the lounge lizard lyrics but for the amazing instrumental that dominates the song. It was initially released in a short version until people got ahold of the album and said "play that" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_2D8Eo15wE Black Betty was an old blues tune cranked up into a legend. The band is about as redneck as you could could get but the song itself was a slick, powerful snake of a tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxIWDmmqZzY Another song with a long instrumental. These guys are the reason that calling out "Free Bird" at concerts became a thing. It became a thing because Free Bird was an amazing song. A marathon ran at a frantic pace it builds from a vocal crawl into an instrumental that just builds and builds and gets faster and faster. About half of these guys were dead a month or so after this concert.

Whole lotta stars and bars in that "Freebird" video lol. On the beatles debate. I'm a big fan of RAM by Paul McCartney. It sort of falls outside of "classic" rock as its an independent album made when he was completely free of any other Beatles creative direction. Its certainly one of the best indie albums ever made and a classic in that sense.

Styx-Come Sail Away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5MAg_yWsq8 When you think "classic dad rock" these guys will immediately come to mind.this one starts with classical touch but then woo boy does it take you for a ride. Deep Purple - Highway Star https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr9ie2J2690 Then you have bands that shifted, changed, band members left, band members died, band members returned.quality remained.they're still putting out albums! whichever year, there's always a song that loving rocks. Ac-dc - Back in Black. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAgnJDJN4VA Of course, then you have the giants.the simplest , dirtiest riffs. The powerhouse performances.that loving voice.that loving riff. Simplicity is a difficult thing to master.

from the perspective of learning chord theory on piano or guitar Beatles are fuckin canon. A/B/C song structure, borrowed chords, making poo poo resolve...can't say I listen to a whole lot of it anymore but especially their early catalog has some songs that when you write them out...the changes are quite beautiful.

~Coxy posted:Thank you. Correct. The Beatles were obviously hugely talented and revolutionized pop/rock/whatever music. They've also been played to death on classic rock radio for 35+ years. Even within the context of classic rock there's a ton of material that never gets played except at 2am for the DEEP CUTS RADIO HOUR. Instead we hear the same what, 50 classic rock songs over and over again. Since the BadCo guy died i was going to say i'm sure we'll hear more of them but i dont know if thats even possible

It's embarrassing but I keep getting Billy Joel and Billy Idol confused, not being very familiar with either of them, though there are a few Idol hits I like. One time at a party I was half drunk and talking to a guy who said he liked Billy Joel. I said yeah that song Dancing With Myself is pretty good, and I was surprised that he didn't seem to know it
