Nier Automata is a game about two races of artificial lifeforms constrained by their programming to fight for eternity pursuing goals that can never be accomplished. The different ways groups and individuals deal with the inherent futility of their existence is one of the main themes of the game. That's what Snak means by existentialist science fiction. If that doesn't interest you then there's not going to be much else the game has to appeal to you.

Just turn the difficulty down. I'm a pretty big defender of Nier: A because of the story, but I don't think the gameplay is very good. It's basically just boring. There are a few parts that are really cool if you play them when you are the right level, but if you are over or underlevelled, they are boring. Considering it's an open world game where you can do side quests in any order, that's a pretty big failing of the overall design. A big piece of advice that people give is that, because you unkock chapter select eventually, you can do all the side quests later. Sure, you can, if yoy want to oneshot every enemy with your eyes closed. Doing sidequests where it's literally impossible for enemies to hurt you but you still have to fight a few dozen of them isn't interesting. Also, while the machine enemies don't scale to your level, the wildlife does, so while the enemies that you face as part of the quest can't hurt you, a moose can kill you in one hit.

Look, I hate overly anime poo poo and I like Nier. It's a fun mindless hack 'n slash RPG with an intriguing enough story. If you absolutely detest anime and a dystopian world, you probably won't like it. It's not without its issues. That said, if you're 45 hours in and waiting for it to pick up, it's a safe bet you won't come to like it. Not all goon word is the last word, if you're not into a game you're not into it, you don't have to dump 25 hours to decide if it's good or not. Wipe your hands with it, sell it, and move onto the next I'm looking at you Persona 4 you dog poo poo of a game surrounded by hype from creepy obsessed anime peoples
