My friends Josh and Gabe run Breakaway Records on North Loop. They have everything but specialize in soul. I think End Of An Ear is closed right now while they relocate. Edit: I guess they're open? I heard they were supposed to close this month though... Dogen fucked around with this message at 01:56 on Aug 26, 2016 |

E: ugh I guess it was just a hold on my credit card as it's not appearing there anymore. Nice of them to tel me though, no idea why there was an issue. My billing address and shipping address are different but there's space for both and it said successful next to transaction. EL BROMANCE fucked around with this message at 21:18 on Aug 28, 2016 |

Pretty good video testing "how much tracking force is too much?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPc5frU8IQQ I hope that some day the "cheap record players will literally destroy your records" rhetoric will die down. There are plenty of good reasons that people shouldn't buy something from Crosley or Ion or whatever, but people shouldn't be scared into dropping at least $300 on a turntable because that is the only way to protect their investment.

You want something with some weight and the less plastic the better. Same goes for turntables.

idk just get either of the popular Audio Technicas (LP60/LP120), they look great, sound good, have replaceable needles, are popular enough that if something goes wrong it should be easy to find support, and don't require an amp. the LP60 is $100 and the LP120 can be gotten fairly easily for $200-250, and at $300 really isn't that bad at MSRP I don't know why you'd get something used unless you just really like the aesthetics of old turntables or have some special requirement like something to DJ with.

Been a while, here are a couple of recent finds. Monsta Island Czars - Run the Sphere 12" I've been on a Monsta Island Czars kick lately and picked this single up for cheap. Such a good loving song. Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain OST I'm mostly stoked to have found a record story that carries Finders Keepers releases. This is some good -- but ever so slightly pretentious -- poo poo. And finally... Stephen Arnold Music 2016 sampler That's a transparent cover with a blue face with a transparent dust jacket with a yellow face that will combine and make a green face over a transparent record. Who is Stephen Arnold, exactly? The perks of working at a TV station I guess. The marketing director gave it to me on account that she had no turntable to listen to anything. Basically it's music that sounds like something popular you'd hear on the radio, but is nice 'n cheap as far as royalties go. If your favorite CBS sitcom features a scene where that lazy millennial son living with his parents is rocking out to something that kind of sounds like Pantera when he really should be looking for a job, then congrats, that's track 8 on this record. It also features a song dedicated to the New Orleans Saints, for some reason. Bonus screenshot from the program that was on the USB card in the first photo:

It's in its inner plastic sleeve in that pic, the actual record is plain old transparent. I then thoroughly sterilized the sleeve to remove any smudges and fingerprints.

So Dot Wiggin is doing an autograph signing in my area and I'm wondering if it's hosed up to go to that because the whole thing with the Shaggs is like "Hey, I love this because it's terrible and also everyone is laughing at you because your dad was a dick.".

stay depressed posted:if she thought it was hosed up or that people were laughing at them she probably wouldn't be doing those things so i don't think there's anything to worry about Well I figured that. And people do genuinely love the album. I sure do. It just feels weird since it's popularity is based on people being like "Holy poo poo, what the gently caress!?". The first pressing has already sold out on pre-order on the LITA site (you can still pre-order it elsewhere, I got mine from Music Direct with 15% off with the promo code: EMERGENCY). So people are excited about it.

I'm still on the hunt for a decent local used record player that's not $250+, but I was able to get one of those cheap suitcase players from work for free to listen to a few of the 150 records I bought for 30 bucks. It's definitely not great, but it doesn't sound any worse than my mom's hundred dollar player she bought a few years ago so that's a bonus. It also runs on battery or USB power, so I can disconnect it from the mains to avoid any miniscule 60Hz hum like a proper audiophile It has built-in speakers, which are disgusting, but sounds decent through my receiver and Polk towers. I no longer need to look for a player with 78 capability, as all my 78s play terribly. There is some minor noise with 33s, which is to be expected with a badly-stored collection and cheap player, but the 78s just sound awful. I really don't see a reason to get a decent player for those, as they are so beat up, warped and scratched. This cheap-o player is plenty good enough for those. E: I visited a nearby record store when looking for a reasonably priced entry level player, and goddamn I might blow a lot of money there over time. They have a tapped keg in the basement so you can have a beer while browsing the collection, which is stereotypical for Madison but still pretty cool and indicative of the "yeah, hang out and listen to music old-school" vibe of the shop.
