For shits and giggles I compiled all the Yokozuna with 9-6 records or worse since 1990 (excluding missed 0-0-15 basho, there are a ton of those)code:

So, generally after someone wins the basho, they attend a big press conference the next day. This time Hakuho didn't turn up to it. He also refused any interview after Day 14 Kakuryu There was a big to do about this as while this presser isn't required, its pretty much expected. People were really on his case about it, including members of the Association and Press. Now, it turns out his wife had a miscarriage 5 months into a pregnancy, and Hakuho found out after Day 13. http://ameblo.jp/hakuho-69/entry-11871576460.html

Jesus, that's horrible. Really hits home too since we're almost 5 months pregnant and are supposedly in the free-and-clear zone as far as miscarriages go. That would loving devastate us.

Oh wow that is some pretty harsh news. Definitely understandable to skip out on optional interviews after something like that.

In some more positive news, Shohozan got married to this hottie: This month was the 'official' wedding though they got secretly married in March because of a pregnancy (this seems to be like 90% of sumo weddings though)

Nagoya 2014 Banzuke is out:code:
Biggest mystery is why Tochinosan wasn't placed above Goeido. It doesn't really matter that much, but its weird. Promotion watch: Kisenosato Apparently only a top quality 15-0 will get Kisenosato considered for promotion to Yokozuna this time. I'm not sure what a weak 15-0 performance would look like. Goeido A 13 win season would get Goeido to Ozeki. I haven't seen much pre-basho news so I assume everyone is pretty healthy, so it'll be tough for him to reach this. Tochinosan Needs 14 wins somehow. Ikioi Has never been above Makuuchi before. Honestly, the top half feels pretty stacked this time. Demotion watch: Kotoshogiku Will be demoted from Ozeki if he doesn't score 8 or more wins. Its pretty clear he still isn't the same since his injury. A 9-6 (which includes 2 freebies), a 8-7, and the last 5-10 doesn't bode too well. He's been training without his shoulder all taped up though. Gagamaru Could seriously be back in Juryo if he puts in another performance like last time. Juryo: code:
Ichinojo This will be only his 4th season, took the championship last time, looks to move up to the top league. He's big and strong, but many question his agility to really perform with the upper crust. Tochinoshin Still on his rehab tour, has won 14 straight against worse opposition. He's an upper-half Makuuchi guy so it'd be nice to see him back soon. Probably won't get out of Juryo unless he goes 15-0 which is unlikely. Basho starts July 13th.

Can't wait to see how Osunaarashi does in the upper ranks. He will most likely go make-koshi this basho, but I'm pulling for him.

Over the past weekend the yokozuna and ozeki have been visiting other stables for training and warm-ups for the tournament. Hakuho, Kakuryu, and Kisenosato all look about 100%. Kakuryu has had hardly any downtime since the last tournament, spending a lot of time in the gym for weight and cardio training. Hakuho has refused any interview with the press for 5 days now, almost all his quotes coming from overhearing of fan interaction and discussion among other wrestlers. It seems like there is still some bad blood there about how the media handled his absenc Harumafuji is training normally but still has his ankle and elbow taped up pretty well. Its hard to see him winning especially if Hakuho has his grip back. Kotoshogiku news has been very sparse, is apparently absent from any kind of preparation. The general feeling on the chance of getting a winning record to maintain his ozeki rank seems to be low. In other news, Ichinoji is aiming to beat Endo and Oosunarashi so that he is accepted into the ranks of promising young wrestlers.

Oosunaarashi closed fist to Kisenosato's nose was a real bummer. Let's say that it had won him the fight, would he then have gotten disqualified? The only offenses I've seen getting called out were hair pulls...

He didn't strike with the fist though, he struck with the forearm... something he did all last season too. I'm going to bet the Sumo Assoc. will have some input later on about this. Let's not forget, either, that Hakuho made that move famous. I can't remember who it was sometime in the last year that he dropped as soon as they collided, but it made Oosunaarashi look like an amateur.

A slow start to the day but there are some great bouts in there. Goeido's escape from Tochiozan was great to see, and holy hell Osunaarashi! In Juryo, Tochinoshin is 5-0 on the return from injury tour. Hopefully a strong result (especially if he wins Juryo) would have him promoted straight back up to Makuuchi without having to spend another basho in the lower leagues. If he could get a third back-to-back zensho it would be silly to keep him out of the top division, surely?
