I'm old af and find it incredibly hard to keep up with the massive wave of video games that's coming out these days, anyone feel the same? I mostly look at active threads in this forum every few months to see what's out, if they're active enough, often the game is good. (as long as it's a genre that interests me, that is) Then I get the game and never come around to actually play it more than for half an hour. Then when I actually have the time, I often end up playing old games I've been playing already for years. How do I get out of this

i wish we actually got new games with all of these new loving releases. the best we get is elevator pitches along the lines of 'it's like X, except with Y"

"New" games are exactly that. Games build upon previous games and when you reduce it down to its bare minimum then that is all you have because at that point all you're doing is saying "this game is in an existing genre."

"It's like Doom except you have a crowbar!"
"It's like Mario except you're a blue hedgehog!"

Every so often you get something that creates a new genre but even then it's very rare for it not to be inspired by previous games just taken in new directions. This is also true for films, books and other media. You don't get 'new' things out of thin air except in the rarest of occasions.

Like that game 20 years ago you liked, just incredibly bad

To be fair there are a few creative ideas in between, what annoys me more is that nothing is ever finished or gets (more important) finished. Lots of half-baked stuff out there that could be good with the right amount of effort.

Should I play Mass Effect 3 or World of Final Fantasy over the long weekend? I'm about an hour in on both and haven't ever finished either (despite repeated attempts on the former)

(edit) Or should I sit down and finally play Bloodborne for more than an hour and a bit

In addition to playing Odin Sphere, I also booted up the Mega Man Legacy Collection I got with the coupon that was with that PS4 humble bundle and I've been playing Mega Man 3, which was always my favorite of the series. I'm honestly not sure if I've ever beaten the whole thing considering the last time I played it (in the Anniversary collection) I played through with a friend and we switched off on levels. Even now I'm using save states and it's weird that I feel kind of bad even doing that, especially when you consider that when I was a kid I used to cheat like hell to get through the game with the second controller trick. Still, I'm well on my way. I've defeated the initial robot masters and I'm now at the awesome part of the game where you have to fight all the MM2 robot masters in remixed version of some of the MM3 stages.

Hey oddium congratulations! Whatever you do don't worry about anyone else's opinion on names. My other half's mother hated our daughter's name at first and told us so; my partner was devastated but we stuck to our guns. Her mum got over it totally and we know we would've regretted giving her a traditional name to keep other people happy!

I am playing Dishonored and another game which are not quite happy but at least allow me to stop lovely people from being lovely and at the moment that's the kind of escapism I need.

I appreciate DIshonored has you offered superpowers by a strange being with black eyes and you're allowed to go "Nah, fam, that's okay" and play the entire game without superpowers if you want. I'm curious what impact it has on the story.

By "Dishonored" do you mean 1 or 2? Because if I didn't know that you could refuse the Outsider in 1, if so that's awesome, it not then it's awesome that you can do it in 2
