Our Lync 2013 setup has been pretty great, and it even integrates well with our Cisco/Tandberg video rooms and IP telephony. The only real issues we have are when people are trying to do stuff that is theoretically possible but ridiculous, such as using their iPad on the other side of the world to run a Citrix desktop on servers here with us, and trying to video call from that Citrix session.

We are getting Lync now, but the old solution was Sametime, so I'm not sure it could get any worse. As long as basic IM works, it's about even. In case you don't know, Sametime is the IM solution in Lotus Notes. Which means we don't use Outlook, which means Lync bitches every time it starts about missing a mail application. Because who the hell would run Lync and Notes at the same time?

But the single sign on is unreliable, and any chance of doing a meeting with screen sharing, voice or video went right out the window after some bullshit IE update. And contact info gets updated only on request from the Address book, so if you changed your number or title, you will still be listed as Trainee Idiot forever for most people. Due to a buyout and integration we are now going to end up with Notes/Domino DBs, Sametime, Lync, Outlook and probably a couple of different document systems all at once. When one system is crap, add a few more crappy ones to the mix! On the other hand, we got rid of the Blackberries.

The place I work now uses a hosted Lync solution that ties into our hosted Exchange and we have no issues with it at all. It logs all of the conversations to Outlook, clicking links is fine, copying and pasting is fine. We don't use it for phone/video stuff but I don't understand how you guys have such massively hosed up installs of it.

Office 365 w/ Lync 2010 (don't upgrade to 2013 ever, it's terrible) works as it should. Logged conversations, links, etc. This has NOT always been the case, links were an issue as recently as a year ago, but it seems like they've got it sorted. One thing I love is watching service status with Office 365. Sharepoint is constantly in a problem/recovery state. Not even Microsoft can manage the beast that is Sharepoint.

We host Lync at my office. It has been a massive clusterfuck. As an internal IM client it is fine. However incoming/outgoing calls drop all of the time. And dont get me started on Lync meetings. Somehow any board member or executive loses half of their brain when they try to start or organize a Lync meeting. My favorite being when they double book a conference room, one as a Lync meeting the other as a normal meeting and then only see the normal meeting on the conference room computer and cant start the Lync meeting. Seriously gently caress Lync meetings forever. Now all that said, I'm sure patches have fixed a lot of the random errors that do occur. I wouldn't know though because I'm headed into my fifth meeting in the last 6 weeks to discuss why it's bad that we dont use WSUS or let any computer update.

There was an actual emergency in the warehouse last week and the first 3 times they dialed 911 they got a busy signal, which our super-helpful PBX handled by playing a recorded "This extension could not be dialed" message. The fourth call was a success. When it happened the person who made the calls filed a ticket and I looked into it ASAP. I don't like to do it but I had the tech support guy over in the warehouse test 911 on all the phones used in the incident and we couldn't reproduce the problem. The logs revealed the busy status of the first three calls, and I looked it up and confirmed that 911 dispatch returning a busy signal is unfortunately neither unheard of or entirely uncommon. I narrowed it down to the analog dialer used to dial 911 returning a 'busy' status to the PBX when it detects a busy signal, rather than playing it back to the caller. I told the user about all of his and he thanked me for looking into it and said it seemed like I was on top of it. Obviously the busy signal not being obvious is an issue and I'm fixing it no matter what. I've already ordered another dialer to test with to confirm the way it handles busy signals. I've confirmed 100% that 911 dialing works and the problem is very very likely to not be on our end. But then the warehouse manager filed a ticket about the incident 2 days after the fact completely furious, refused to read anything I wrote in response, and is now taking it upon himself to test 911 from every phone in the warehouse, 5-6 at a time each day. This is after I explained to him that we test 911 quarterly for each building. I asked my boss about it and his response was "I say let him test". Sigh.

We dial 9 for an outside line and originally '911' is all it took, but too many sales reps with shaky fingers triggered police visits (what is it with grown-rear end adults and straight-up hanging up on 911? gently caress) so it's been 9911 for years now. 9911 is an IVR that determines how to route the call depending on which building the caller's extension is in, to ensure that dispatch gets the correct address. poo poo, maybe someone was calling our analog line.

It did not help that many of these users were in foreign call centers but connected to US switches.

SubjectVerbObject posted:How many outside lines are dedicated to the IVR? Are they dedicated to outgoing 911 calls? Were multiple people calling 911 at once? Three; one line per building. The two satellite buildings have analog lines dedicated to 911, and the main building has a multi-channel PRI that handles it. Only one person was trying to dial 911 at a time according to the logs, so I don't think more than one person was trying to call at once. Even if they were, the first person to reach that building's dialer would have gotten through. The possibility of someone calling our analog lines is bothering me now, and I'm going to get call routing set up on those, if only so we can tell anyone calling those lines who isn't emergency services to gently caress off.

We have extensions that are 11XX. I imagine a lot of our misdials are people pressing 9 because they're retarded or by muscle memory, and then 11XX for the extension.

# ? Nov 24, 2014 19:49 |

People used to accidentally dial 911 when they were trying to make a long distance call (begins with 91) and hit the 1 twice. We changed it to/upper management mandated that it be 9911 after that because the people who get angry at learning new things hold all the power here. I wanted to make it 8 I did have a manager at one of the satellite locations ask me why the police visited about a 911 call once and found that a sales rep had dialed the obscure extension of that building's 911 dialer, then hung up, y'know, like an adult would. That was pretty awesome because it doesn't begin with 9 and isn't at all close to any other existing extension. I still have no idea what he was trying to do.

Or people use softphones, type in 91 from habit, and then copy past a 1+10 digit number into the dial field. Or their fingers just slip.
