I mean, if I were touring say, cathedrals in Europe, I would not expect one of them to be the one that like, is pro-holocaust. I would expect all of them to be "good".

Different cultures though too, apples and oranges.

And even then I wouldn't expect it to be out of the question that some Cathedrals in Europe were built in honor of a Crusade and that might offend some Muslims.

This explanation only works if you assume that Justin Bieber thinks that Pearl Harbor was just a movie*. All shrines dedicated to the memory of Japanese soldiers from WW2 are "bad", because Japan was on the wrong side of the war.

He was actually supposed to know that by being a human being that exists on the earth, no different than the reason you or I know that. That shrine has an attached museum that literally explains what its about, you could step one foot in there and know that you were getting into some poo poo that probably isn't the greatest thing to tweet to millions.

What's the purpose of this shrine, is it actually honouring war criminals or it it like a museum describing the criminal acts they did?

It honours deceased Japanese soldiers, among whom are some prominent war criminals. The Japanese government has repeatedly refused to strike those names from the shrine, justifiably angering nations whose peoples suffered under Japanese occupations.

It also has a museum that argues that the war crimes weren't actually war crimes and a monument to the only member of the war crimes tribunal that voted Not Guilty for every Japanese war criminal.

The Yasukuni Shrine isn't some unknown, obscure thing. I get that not everybody is aware of it in the same way that not everybody is aware of Dachau. And that certain groups of people simultaneously believe that both nothing happened at Dachau and if something were to have happened, it would have been a good thing. That happens because people are ignorant of other cultures and can't be expected to know everything.

However, it is a publicist's job to know those sorts of things. I imagine it was just some Japanese nationalist looking to score some points (and they scored big). But celebrities need to have that sort of poo poo vetted.

This isn't some trivial thing, it's loving deadly serious in that part of the world. Bieber was probably totally ignorant but there is no loving way it was an accident.

My only experience with the Chinese is through working for a company in a another country that exports products to them and hence we have to adhere to their import requirements, but that's enough to have learned that the Chinese government takes EVERYTHING ultra loving serious, and worse than that, they're fickle as all hell, the slightest tiniest thing is enough to set them right off.

If the Chinese government happens to notice this in anyway, he's never going to be welcome there.

I've been to both. I can understand why the Chinese would get upset at the Japanese PM visiting the shrine, as it means they're paying respects to the fallen soldiers (some of whom are considered war criminals, as you stated). A Westerner, however, is basically just sightseeing, which although that generally holds negative connotations, a lot can be learned from visiting sites like the Yasukuni Shrine and Dachau. You get a closer sense of the atrocities of war when visiting such places.

He is a massive John Williams nerd, to the point where he only refers to him as "the maestro" and treats his two encounters with him as religious experiences. Did Williams to the score to one of the other Spider-Man movies? I guess that would explain his hostility, sort of.

Do you not understand the difference between a place which has been turned into a memorial site cataloging the atrocities of Nazi Germany, and a place which explicitly honours war criminals and provides a positive, revisionist history to the acts of Imperial Japan? Dachau and Yasukuni could not be more different in purpose.

Do you not understand that visiting a site and the reasoning behind visiting the site reserve two separate levels of judgment?

Images like this really get to me more than any of the others - you can almost feel the person being so close to coming to a more reasonable conclusion, but for whatever reason they can't quite make it there.

Edit: I've just looked up the numbers, and it looks like the total foreign aid budget of c. $48 billion is around 7% of the defense budget. Yep, problem's sure with the foreign aid there.
