I did the masters international program, not one of the fellowships. But about half of my program were rpcvs and they all got good deals. And the majority of non degree holders in my Benin cohort got into grad school quite easily. So it's great for graduate school. Anyone that's done Macedonia? Any sister has a masters degree in special ed and was thinking about applying to the special education program there.

I had an interview a while ago for Costa Rica and the interviewer basically said that speaking Spanish is one of the biggest things needed for working in Central or South America. I ended up not getting it as I know very little Spanish, but he said it was highly competitive this year and I should try to reapply in the future.

Since you didn't ask a question I'll just  too.Back before the application process got more competitive, in my Panama group of 50, there were only like 4 or 5 people that didn't have at least decent Spanish skills. I'd imagine it'd be even less non Spanish speakers now. You could always try an English speaking country such as Belize or Guyana or take classes at your local community college to boost your language level.

Yeah I initially put that I would want to go anywhere thinking that I would be put into a program that needed more applicants, but that didn't seem to be the case. It also sucks that they can't refer you to other programs or apply to multiple programs at once. I guess that's the reality when there are so many applicants these past few years.

This is the right idea. I served in Mongolia and still live here. Nobody has prior language experience with Mongolian, and there are plenty of countries like that. I didn't realize it had gotten so competitive.

Eh not so much so. You'll probably be operating in Spanish unless you're that one dude in a group of 50 who becomes fluent in the native language. Most volunteers in Panama work with Latinos. In Peru they don't work with indigenous at all.

I'll look for some stuff later, but be SURE to apply to the jobs listed on the PC website. I never heard anything from private sector or USAJOBS applications, but heard back immediately from the direct applications on the PC site, and got 3 offers at the same time.

Well I had the opposite experience as Slaan, I applied to about 11 jobs at once and heard back from none of them, but can attest that the RPCV Links section of the official Peace Corps website is the place to check. Almost of all the jobs looking for an NCE candidate have a special e-mail or something you send directly to the person doing the hiring.

Definitely the PC job board. I managed to get hired for two federal jobs in my one year of NCE (the last one was in the last week of eligibility). Never heard anything from the USAJobs listings I applied to. For the two fed jobs I got, I just emailed my resume directly to the office directors (the top dog and person who makes the hiring decision), and they caled me personally within a week to schedule an interview. It was almost easier than getting hired in the private sector. A couple RPCVs I worked with at my first agency also leveraged their NCE to switch agencies during that year (jumping from an OK job that they could get after getting back to their preferred position). It makes it so much easier for the hiring staff. I'm sure if we had applied a week after NCE expired we would have been screwed, even though we were all obviously qualified either way.

Hope you Peace Corps vets are still around, I have a question! I applied back in April, was given prospective deployment to Ukraine in March with a latest "know by" date of September 1st. So essentially I'll know if I'm being invited or not in two weeks exactly. Unfortunately I've just been offered two great AmeriCorps positions and need to confirm or deny my committment to one of them by then end of the week, and the other by Monday. I've been trying to get a hold of my PC placement officer to get some kind of idea of whether I'll be accepted or not, but she's been basically unreachable. I want to serve with the Peace Corps more than anything, but I also don't want to be stuck with no prospects in two weeks. The last correspondence I've had with anyone at the Peace Corps was back in May when I conducted my interview and last month when I was mailed a fingerprint/criminal background check form, which gets sent out regardless of whether you've been invited or not. What are my options from here?

It's a little lovely, but why don't you accept the AmeriCorps position and then if you hear back from Peace Corps immediately call AmeriCorps and let them know you can't do it? You wouldn't start the posting with them right away or anything would you?

I feel like that would really jeopardize my integrity and leave the organization in a tough spot, perhaps even unable to fill the position for the year. Yeah Americorps and Peace Corps are extremely similar, so they get people applying to both all the time. You are probably not in an uncommon situation. Just ask Americorps for a short extension if possible like the others said.

Welp looks like my fears were unfounded. I just got my invite today, I'll be deployed to Ukraine in March to work as a Community Youth Development Volunteer. This is a pretty incredible feeling I had previously applied in the beginning of 2015 and received a prospective deployment notice to Jordan, but they withdrew all operations from the country following the crisis there and I lost my spot. Needless to say I've spent a lot of time telling people "no I'm not in yet" and "no I haven't received my invite yet" that it's a little hard to believe that that's actually not the case anymore.

The US has a strong interest in maintaining friendly relations with Ukraine, which is the primary mission of the Peace Corps. And there is plenty of space in Ukraine that is far from the Russian border, so any volunteers could be easily extracted if they had to be.

Yeah they're placing volunteers primarily in the western and central areas of the country. Aside from some hot spots, much of the country is relatively stable. Luckily I had a Ukrainian and two Russians on my college swim team that I still keep in touch with and will be giving me some pointers on learning the languages. The Ukrainian happens to speak both languages... and Italian, Spanish and English. He's actually from Donetsk and his whole family fled the country when they were targeted by terrorists after Russia seized the Crimean Peninsula (his father is a well-known physician). He's mentioned to me many times that he'll probably never return to Ukraine.

Has PC returned to any other countries they've evacuated in the recent past? All if the post-Ebola countries, right? I know they make a distinction between temporary withdrawal and shutting down operations entirely. I just always seem to hear "volunteers being evacuated" but when they return it's with less fanfare. Is Myanmar still in the works? Personally, I'd love to see Cuba be brought online, but that's probably not going to happen politically (plus I think the Cubans are much more proud of their development record). I think I initially had the option of Tunisia, but I think that country fizzled out before anything got off the ground due to Arab Spring stuff.

My friend is going to Senegal for agri-forestry post soon. I'm helping him with a few things to get set up. Got him a new (refurbished) laptop. Any specifics software that he might need? I imagine the internet infrastructure is not great in Senegal, so trying to pre load anything he might need. He's also not super computer literate so I'm going to try to set it up as simply as possible

I am in Senegal for peace corps right now, though I am in the ced program. For computer software, I would just make sure he has Microsoft searchlight since that's what the PC vrf program runs off of. The Internet can be spotty but if he gets placed in the southern region it won't be so bad. I am posting from village right now. Otherwise, games, music programs, video players etc. If you have any more questions, let me know.

I'd also suggest making sure his phone is available to work as a hotspot, or to bring enough funds to buy one when he arrives as that's the only real way to internet in some of the farther out villages. 3g was all over Benin, even in rural areas, when I was there a few years back. Cities had 4g, thanks Moov! Kindle for reading with a bunch of pre downloaded books is good. There's a bunch of reports and budgeting to do, so make sure it's got office and he has decent knowledge of excel. GenSpecific posted:PC vrf program Come on guy, put a  trigger warning on that post.
