You should definitely not sell X as Y. If there is a new horse meat scandal in the EU I don't know about it, but there's been concerns about the veterinary drugs in Canadian horse meat too - it's something that's been investigated a few times.

As for the stigma, there are a lot of people who will not eat horse even if they eat cow, pig, sheep and chicken, just like many people will not eat dog (me included; I'll eat horse but I'd rather not have dog, though I have had it once).

I go out of my way to eat horse at least once every two weeks or so, because I have reason to believe that it's quite healthy.

Also, I just love the taste. I had horse tacos last week, they were delicious.

Horse sashimi is great.

How can you argue with this:

I had it several times in Switzerland (where it was properly labeled as horse). It's very lean so there's very little leeway in cooking between perfect and "basically leather". Usually it's marinated in something, I've never seen just a plain horse steak for sale. Not my favorite thing but it wasn't bad, and it was like 5 times cheaper than beef there.

So what does horse taste like? I've had antelope which kinda was like a mix of venison and pork taste, and shark which I just being more rubbery than having a particular taste to it.

Soiled Meat
It's relatively unremarkable, lean, slightly sweet, a bit venison like (so better marinated than not), with a vaguely distressing purple hue when the meat is raw.

A lot of people view horses as pets instead of work animals, so they mentally treat them more like cats and dogs than livestock. Which is stupid because horses are skittish morons & take the GDP of an island nation to keep as pets, but hey.

This is the thing. Horsemeat isn't really uncommon as actual meat, but it's labeled as such and the horses are mostly bred for it. The "horsemeat lasagna' scandal was because it was sold as beef, and the horsemeat came from dodgy slaughterhouses and horses.

It's a red meat, kind of fatty, kind of game-y. It's pretty distinctly flavoured (though I'm told that's not always true).

I was willing to try it once, but honestly, I'd rather have lamb or something. It wasn't horrible, just not really to my taste... but given it's dog I've never been in any rush to try it again.

Basashi is pretty unremarkable. I didn't particularly like it since it was too chewy, but A) it was also supermarket raw horse and B) I'm not the biggest fan of sashimi in the first place. If you told me it was like, raw deer or rabbit I probably would have believed you.

I've had horse in Quebec, it's fine. Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

People are funny about meat - when I went to Italy on an exchange program, we were all camped out in this weird euro-hell 80's hotel, and they'd do a big dinner for us. One night they served rabbit (i want to say cacciatore) and people lost their poo poo. I had seconds, it was delicious. We were over for a month, and one poor girl was a vegetarian which... Italy did not really do at that time. She subsisted off a jar of peanut butter she brought from home and I assume some kind of photosynthesis. She bruised very easily.

I moved recently and there's a Caribbean joint next door. I cannot convince anyone I know to try the curried goat, which is excellent. Goat, if you haven't had it, is basically a lot like lamb but far less greasy and fatty, with a bit of a stronger taste. It's delicious, especially when it's in a handmade roti and some nice lady from Trinidad has curried it up for you with some potatoes and rice and peas and whatnot. I meant to go there for dinner tonight but I am lazy and it was raining.

God, people who refuse to try regular rear end food are the worst. I live in shitville bumfuck Mideast-land and there are so few options here. Tons of lovely chains, what feels like hundreds of Chinese and Mexican places (not really a problem but they all serve the same things), thousands of generic pizza places. There's a Mediterranean place that is good but their menu is very limited. The other Mediterranean place is way expensive for what you get.

I had Cuban food last year and I would eat it every week if we had a joint around here. I would kill for some diversity.

Caribou is one of the stranger meats I've tried. We cooked a roast and fresh out of the oven it was like a combination of great venison and bison. The leftovers the next day were like the worst venison I've eaten.

Horse is fine and largely unremarkable. Musk ox makes good jerky. Chipmunk is a lot like rabbit. Snake is ok but the most recent time I had it it was served as a gimmick rather than cooked to taste good.
