Apparently the mystery contestant they announced for the Masters today is... Amy? That's certainly more boring than some of the suggestions people made.

They're milking the tournaments for all they're worth and yeah, Timby is right: it's boring.

What the gently caress is even the point of these tournaments if they're just gonna constantly ram the same people down our throats regardless of who wins. Enough already.

Why the gently caress do we need to see Holzhauer again, for Christ's sake? That's what really irks me. He already won last year's Jeopardy Masters tournament.

I can see James if he won last year's and is defending his title or whatever. Amy already had two chances to get in via other tournaments and didn't.

I've mentioned this before, but I have friends who went to high school with James (he and I are literally a week apart from each other in our 1984 birthdates) and he was just as much of a cock in the math club back then as he is now and I'm just sick of him and his $2 million rear end continuing to show up to win more money on Jeopardy.

I’m a James fan, I think he plays at a level unmatched by anyone besides Ken and maybe Victoria (way too soon to say.) from that standpoint I’m happy to see Amy because she’s very good and she might challenge James, but I do think it’s weird that she was the invite after losing the last Masters and the JIT—two events that by design populate Masters. Maybe they were banking on Brad and he bailed and they had to scramble, idk. Give Mike Richards the sixth spot or something. I’ll watch whatever, my opinion shouldn’t matter. Go Victoria.

Yeah, Victoria as a new entry is the only reason I'm remotely interested. Might be funny to see Yogesh get dunked on depending on who he's up against.

Oh the bigoted dipshits in the youtube comments will love that. Unrelated, I started watching Jeopardy again a few months ago after several years and noticed they always say the full category title now, sometimes even starting to abbreviate it before catching themselves. Did the producers tell them to do that? Supposed to be easier for viewers to follow I guess?

I agree that James had a strategy that worked well for him (hunting for Daily Doubles early while also going for max-value clues), and he had an exceptional buzzer game ... but it was so, so delicious to see Ken basically say, "Sit down before you fall down, son," in dominating him in the GOAT Tournament a few years back.

I mainly watch Jeopardy! just for the questions because I like yelling at my TV. The contestants don't really matter to me all that much. I really don't understand how everyone else who watches it cares about the contestants. Except Yogesh. gently caress Yogesh. And yes, I fast-forward through the interviews because I'm a monster.

She's won like 90k by being quite good at buzzing and pretty bad at answering questions, playing against some truly bad competition. I respect it

dovetaile posted:Why is Yogesh even in this Jeopardy masters tournament? They need somebody with a shot of challenging James and then, after inviting Victoria, they had another slot open I do like the ToC champion getting a slot in the big primetime tournament, otherwise we’d just be getting Davies playing with his same four favorite toys every year lmao. Also to be fair I think Yogesh is a top ~10 quizzer worldwide and I like watching good players battle. Building on that point I think this is a very interesting tournament because it’s three people who really came from the competitive quizzing world and three who more or less started on Jeopardy—I expect James/Victoria/Yogesh to absolutely eat everyone’s lunch but the rest of the tournament is obviously very competent and am upset wouldn’t shock me. I’m just excited for good games.

I’m ambivalent about Jeopardy’s move toward establishing a stable of headline personalities for what amount to exhibition matches. I’m drawn to Jeopardy for its sedate presentation of polite, awkward people doing a little quiz. Maybe I’m only Mattea Roach fan with the Masters show, but I feel they really bring the awkward standoffishness I like for Jeopardy. Amy was appreciably genuine last night too, even about not really being consistently up to the level she’s being pulled to play at.
