I was suggesting they had already re-used the pinion nut, and it loosened up causing the pinion to hit the carrier. You can see how it chewed into the carrier for quite a while, i'm guessing it made a hell of a noise for a few miles before the big bang.

Ahh, I missed that. I've reused pinion nuts, but only after squashing them a little tiny bit in a vise. I"m sure you could play all kinds of games with that poo poo depending on what's the most rusted and/or what you prefer to deal with. But the actual takeaway here is: RUN. loving unload it. They jammed the motor so far into the firewall that it's an unreasonable vehicle to work on. That's a prime candidate for leasing/selling once the factory warranty is up. Except they didn't even last that long because of other stupid design decisions. Especially when you take into consideration other vehicles of similar cost that perform the same job (seriously, just get an LB7 Duramax truck). You need to hate yourself to take one of those on as a project.

Bought a set of tyres and rims purely for the rims (got some BFG AT's to drop onto it to save my poor Toyo MT's from getting destroyed on the daily commute) and the chinese "Sailun Terramax H/T's" lasted less than 24hrs and 15km before getting a fatal puncture... (pliers for scale) In other news, its a pain in the dick to swap a good brand AT onto a steel rim with tyre irons.
