actually in our modern culture the word has multiple definitions, including revealing something that someone is keeping secret
i...i know that, but it doesn't change the fact that, in context, the definition is clear and has no connections to how society treats homosexuals

lol the people spreading that urban legend thing that people would make a day of lynchings, like take the kids down and hang a black guy while they'd just have a bunch of sandwiches and complain about ants

the etymology is fake and I was using it for what I thought was an obvious joke (thx for explaining it tho) but people legit did make a day out of attending lynchings, hangings, tortures and various other executions both in the southern us and in various other places throughout history

i'm certainly aware of execution as spectacle, but i'd be skeptical of that being associated with the common "lay down a blanket, bring a basket of food, and sit on the grass" serene nature-enjoying isn't-this-park-nice type of picnic

not calling you a liar, but do you have any sources on lynching-as-social-event? my main objection is that i understood lynchings to be a more spur-of-the-moment type of deal, rather than "hear ye hear ye there will be a lynching tomorrow at 2PM"

Over 10,000 spectators, including city officials and police, gathered to watch the attack. There was a celebratory atmosphere at the event, and many children attended during their lunch hour.

can't find it now, but I definitely remember reading a letter from a southern lady in the early 1900s talking about how "we had a great time at the lynching the other day, wish you could've been here" but I don't expect you to take my word on it

theres circumstantial evidence in how people liked to hang around and get their picture taken with the dead body and then use the pictures for postcards though that it was kind of a happy atmosphere

welp.

i guess i previously didn't understand the connection between actual trials (although probably not fair ones) and lynchings - i thought they were more of a "the KKK shows up at your house one day and straight murders you" than they were "vigilantes grab you after a mock trial"

I'm gonna dig around in my PM history later so I can find your justification on why shooting an unarmed black teenager is totally cool. It makes for a nice pattern with your other posts on how the uppity darkies are causing problems.
