Tbf you don't need the expansion, the base game is now around $20, sometimes as cheap as 10ish depending in platform, and the initial purchase includes a month of free time

I tried all the basic classes and found them all so generic. Maybe the jobs would have been more interesting but since trial characters are limited to 20, I never got to find out. Paying $60 only to realize that it just isn't clicking for me didn't seem appealing.

You should be able to get the base game, like Sentient Data said, for $15-20 in many places at this point. Even as a single-player experience, I think the game is worth that since you'll have the free month. If it still doesn't hook you by, say, the patch content after the Praetorium dungeon, then you'll know it isn't for you, but you'd only be out the equivalent of a few lunches. And if you get on Excalibur, you'll have tons of goons to hang with.

Deffo wouldn't drop dosh on Heavensward until you're certain you like the game, though.

Dungeons for level 15-20 are pretty boring. Sashtasha, Tam-Tara, Copperbell and Halatali don't have exciting mechanics (they shouldn't, since they're newbie dungeons) and one of the issues I have with them is that there's hardly any abilities available for you to use. If you're a tank, your enmity combo isn't even fully unlocked, neither are your stances. Once you get to level 30, you generally have a variety of abilities available to you that make the game more fun, as well as some dungeons that you don't hate to run more than once (Haukke Manor and Brayflox's Longstop are pretty fun, and those are right around 30). Once you can actually start mixing in different combos and consistently making sure your DoTs are applied, the game gets pretty fun.

I would suggest trying a month of the full game to get a class above 30. As others have said, you can get an ARR license for relatively cheap nowadays. Bonus is that you can actually trade with people once you have a full account, and people can gear you up (if you have friends / goons around to do it).

I spam Cure 2 and its equivalents all the time when I'm healing. It might not be efficient, but it's the quickest way to get the tank back up to full health so I can get back to DPSing. I only have MP issues if the tank is poorly geared or isn't popping cooldowns.

So, all the time then? :v:

Even then it's not that bad. If I run out of MP I just let the tank die and then tell him to pop more cooldowns. It's a learning experience!

Yes entice them with the quest wall.

Beastman dailies were 100000 times more fun to do than any of the expansion quests. They had all these different quests that weren't fetch quests and then they totally forgot they can make none lame quests for the expansion.

Expansion quests in order
walk around new town
talk to nobles about how good you can collect bear butts
collect snow bear butts
collect frosty bear butts
save a cat
collect forest bear butts
chocobos
collect hill bear butts
collect sky bear butts
collect mountain bear butts
talk to a dragon about collecting bear butts

A decently geared tank should still be able to do fine even without cooldowns with a regen and forget healer or a faerie, unless they're doing a real big pull. But even then, rampart, shadow skin and foresight are all 90 sec cooldowns so it's not like they won't be refreshed for the next pull, usually.

My one complaint with this game, so far, in terms of questing, is that they've somehow managed to make escort quests worse by making you have to wave at the thing you're escorting every time. I've done two of these and they were both stupid. They weren't hard, just stupid.

These are levequests that you never have to do outside of the rare case where they're the quest required to unlock the region's levequests, thankfully.

Fortunately those are only in leve quests, and you can easily avoid them. Just don't take any with the chocobo cart in the art panel. But yes, they are unbelievably tedious.

Make a keybind for the emote so you can easily do it. I found it helpful to focus target the escortee as well.

The only part of the escort quests that really annoyed me is the range on the /beckon emote.

Sorry, the goblin you're trying to escort can't see you waving at him because he has a rare neurological condition where people waving at him only registers when it's done from within 20 feet exactly. Step closer and try again.

Oh, I did all of those things but it was still the least fun kind of quest. I did the one at Hawthorne Hut with the sylph, and got to the camp I needed to take it to, but then somehow the progress bar went down because I was going to the wrong part of the camp. But yeah, I'm glad to read these just for the leveperson. I figured I may as well open them up while I was there, you know?

I dunno if I'd say they went through any kinda trouble, I mean they just took the first letter from the imperial units and threw a -alm or -ulm after.

Fister Roboto

The funny thing is they actually made escort leves more tedious in a later patch. You used to be able to /beckon while the target was moving, now you can't.

kafziel

It does seem slightly better than the Imperial system - measurements of a type share a suffix, so distances are all -lms and weights are all -nze. Presumably volume has its own suffix too, so you won't have to guess about whether someone means an ounce as in 1/16th of a pound or an ounce as in 1/8th of a cup.

Escorts are much less hassle if you do it in a party so one person can just walk in a straight line clicking their /beckon macro and reading a book while the rest beat up monsters.

Just whatever you do, never take the escort leve from Aleport (aside from the initial one that you have to do to unlock leves there, I think). The repeatable one has you walk the subject all the way to goddamn Swiftperch which is a good three to four times further than any other escort leve. It is hellish.

If it hasn't been used by 5% I'm tank LBing 100% of the time.

There are a few really good spots for an aoe LB to kill various mob packs and always has been. Hardflox had the pack after the first boss. Neverreap has the packs after the second boss that are just ripe for an LB. Same for Fractal.

I'm surprised that there's no term for a base unit of aether, given how often gathering large amounts of aether for stuff comes up in the MSQ.

(It can't be the crystal, because apparently you can shove an awful lot of aether into a single crystal or object. The Eye and a white aetheryte chunk about the size of a volleyball can hold the <very large> amount necessary to kill Nabriales.)
