It could be 14-D or even 15-D chess. He's a very clever tactician, quite the Napoleon. This sinister dance Is all too much for my dizzy emotional head.

Just got off the phone with Tom Chivers, who's doing his book on the Rationalists. Spoke for an hour telling him my history with the LessWrong subcultures and what I thought about all this tosh. Turns out we know a pile of people in common, 'cos the world's like that. He realises he's going to have to deal with the subculture's hearty embrace of scientific racism, and is somewhat daunted - I think he was anticipating writing something broadly sympathetic. He's a science writer, but what he's (literally) signed up for is a work of internet anthropology. I've written 0 words of a book about this myself and just mumbled that i should do one, so I'm very happy to send him my research and link piles, 'cos there's nothing better than reading 10k words and writing a sentence, then reading another 10k words and not even writing a sentence ...

Sam Harris isn't the hero we need. He isn't the hero we deserve either. I'm not entirely sure he's even the highly incompetent villain we deserve. Maybe he's that dog they put a cape on in the old Justice League cartoons. I forget what my point was here.

Sam Harris should really not agree to do debates. He sounds so angry anytime people don't agree with him. Ezra really needles him in the middle there, talks to him about how he's attributing biases and fallacies to people he doesn't agree with but ignoring them in himself and in people he does agree with. He hates that. You can see as you scroll down the page that his answers get shorter and shorter, that he interjects and won't let Ezra finish sentences. He's just not prepared for this sort of conversation.

And he even leads by saying that when he decided to publicize their email exchange, that didn't go well for him because other people read him as wildly angry and Ezra as cool and collected and open to debate. The same thing happened here.

He gets owned every time he tries debating anyone with the slightest amount of domain-specific expertise (i.e., anyone with a real academic background in anything), but he's so pig-stubborn that he doesn't accept that he got owned. He always thinks he "won" and the other person exposed how intellectually dishonest or illogical or whatever he says they were. Even his fans (r/samharris) are getting a little bit :yikes: about it.

I'm running a sideblog on Tumblr that regularly gets notes from neoreactionaries. I end up seeing poo poo like this every day now:

The stereotype that far-right Tumblr blogs post tons of anime titties is only half-true, by the way. For the alt-right, definitely. But proper neoreactionaries run ~aesthetic~ blogs. The exact aesthetic depends on the person. Dark, surrealist photography and paintings, with a sprinkling of obscure religious art. Or cars shot at night, alongside knights and guns. It's reached the point where I'm put on edge just from the feel of their image posts.

The giveaway isn't just the random Hitler quotes (though that does happen!), it's the tone of their (and their peers') own text posts: nihilism paired with seething rage. The world is decadent, corrupt, decaying, and ultimately self-destructing, and there's not much you can do but sit back and enjoy the show, but also it's all the fault of those drat blue-tribers, who are all stupid, whiny, vile, and hateful.

The claim is that Leninism split into formal Leninism (ie actual Soviet style stuff) and biological Leninism, and formal Leninism puts a limit on the leftist "ratchet" because it's obviously in power and doesn't need to pander to the lower classes any more, whereas biological Leninism never ends because it can always present itself as counterestablishment and there are always people who are biologically inferior who can be riled up to support the secret leftist power centre

If you can be bothered with this stuff the original, meandering post about it by Spandrell is here: https://bloodyshovel.wordpress.com/2018/01/21/leninism-and-bioleninism/

The Right always kinda trots behind the Left, taking and remodeling culture to their standards. The whole aesthetic\vaporwave\ironic nostalgia movement, regardless of the fact that it started as a leftist critique, makes hay for virulent nihilists, because when stripped of the socialism it's just trapper keeper art, mournful roman busts and dead dreams of middle class prosperity. Super easy to append Manchild Among The Ruins (of his favorite mall) crybaby meanderings to that.

In keeping with the rationalist movement theme of "rediscovering every idea from the last sixty years from first principles", rationalists discover Free Love. Up next: rationalists will discover that relationships are actually really hard, and the movement melts down into five dozen factions over the inevitable who-slept-with-who acrimony.

(That last bit isn't just a cheap joke; I remember divabot saying a while back that the Australian communist factions' splits effectively mirror their leaders' bad breakups with each other.)

My favorite is a debate between Chris Hedges and Sam Harris that was hosted by Truthdig and moderate by Robert Scheer about ten years ago. You can see Scheer become more more horrified at what Harris says. There was something very weak about the intellectual culture (for lack of a better term) during the Bush years. The fact the the New Atheists where had any clout is a strange phenomenon and it feels like it took a solid decade to expose them as intellectual charlatans and neocon windup dolls.

For comedy value nothing beats Harris picking an email fight with Chomsky and loosing badly in it and then asking for Chomsky's permission to make those emails public. Sam's ego something else.

Edit: I am listen to that podcast with Harris and Klien, that fact the Harris makes the conversation about people being mean to him rather than about the scholarship of the Bellcurve is loving hilarious. Harris has spent his whole carrere as a public figure saying he has PHD in neuroscience how can I be wrong. :smug: Klien just dives into the history of America racism and implication of Murray's work and you can hear Harris scrambling to just think of something to say and make drat sure that what he says is about people being mean to him.
