Remember, they're politicians. They don't care because of the morals of the situation, they care because they stand to lose politically. Having a pedophile as a senator from your party is going to be politically damaging to Republicans. They're already looking at the potential of a democratic wave election in 2018, if the momentum from 2017 carries over. They'd much rather lose his Senate seat and try to beat it and get it back in 2020 and likely succeed because it's Alabama than deal with a humongous blowout that cost them both houses in veto-proof majorities. There is no doubt in my mind that they polled other races and found this is dragging them down already.

In the early 90s one of Rush Limbaugh's most popular topics was bashing feminism and feminists. I don't remember all the details, but the timing is right for Gloria Allred to be on this list of women he bashed. In the early 90s right wing radio didn't really exist in peoples minds. It was just people talking about the news you heard at the top of the hour from your local station. So a lot of it leaked out. And to be honest, a lot of people agreed with it even if they didn't listen. Years later all people remember is that they don't really like her even if they don't know why, because honestly she isn't in the news often enough to draw this sort of reaction. If nothing else Rush is really good at getting liberals to believe what he says about them.

And changing the culture that causes it requires strategy to impact it. It has a level of seriousness beyond accusations just being a form of public group therapy. Activism requires strategy, and that doesn't cheapen experiences of victims. quote:For what it's worth accusing thread-goers of trying to 'stand in' for these women is a little dog-whistly. Most of the speculation sounds like what you’d get from people spitballing without much understanding or throwing out “what if” hypotheticals. The simplest plan (Strange write in) is by far the most likely. Everything else starts sounding like Hoise of Cards* one wierd trick scenarios. * Topical molestation humor**! **I am going to hell.
