I guess it is the same motivation that makes people use unwieldy minis in real life rather than more practical cardboard tokens.

That given, I tried TTS for X-Wing and it was fiddly as gently caress and took much longer to play than Vassal. Vassal can be difficult to setup but once you actually get used to it, the game is much simpler to play.

I've never actually used vassal because the tutorial just to set up a list was huge. It looks pretty unwieldy to me.

TTS has been super fun. Joining the SA group asap! I will be out of town for the next 2 days but would love to play more wangs when I return. In regards to TTS once you learn it, the movement becomes pretty simple and games move smoothly. The side by side with up to 8 people in a room just chatting is pretty great too.

I suspect the high latency will be a deal-breaker, whereas Vassal might be more forgiving of high latency. TTS is doing a bunch of stuff like showing where people are currently pointing etc. that might screw up with an extremely high latency connection.

You could always buy TTS, try it and get a refund as long as you refund it in 14 days and don't use TTS for more than 2 hours. Should be plenty of time to test the latency.

You did literally everything I wanted you to do for the first 3-5 turns or so that game. It was beautiful. I've literally never had a plan survive the first engagement so well. YOU ARE CREDIT TO TEAM (my team)

Shame I lost 3 shields of my shuttle to rocks, but it was worth it to further restrict your movements and keep Vader out of the fight for an extra round.

So far I've thought of:

I'm having a real hard time coming up with things that aren't TIE Swarms that can beat those things.

Imperial Aces seem to do pretty well.

Biggs to draw fire isn't a bad idea. I've seen some local players do pretty well with a Ghost/Phantom/Biggs list. (Don't recall the details)

I fly R2, because being able to hard 2 after a k-turn and get an action is incredibly useful.

Also I'm horrible at using repositions. I don't use them much in the first place, and always gently caress it up.

Initiative bid is also nice. What else is on Wedge?

Just Predator and Integrated Astro, my list comes out to 98 points at the moment. The only way I could put a Proton Torpedo on him would be to drop Seismic Charges/Extra Munitions off of Dutch, which is a thing I've considered but as much potential punch as Wedge/Protorp/Predator/Guidance Chips has, I've found the bombs to just be way too useful in the past so I go for Integrated Astromechs on the X-Wings which extends their survivability nicely...before IA I would almost always lose one or both X-Wings before the game was over, now it's not uncommon for me to end games with all three ships still in play.

Well at the moment, the two big meta lists people are running are Palp Aces and triple Jumpmasters. 3xJM5K, initiative is mostly academic, it's "do you want to place the first obstacle y/n," but with Palp Aces it gets a little more important because being able to tell PS9 arc dodgers that they have to lock their post-dial movement in before Wedge goes has been helpful in the past. Your classic Vader Soontir Palpatine list sits at 100 points on the nose, so maybe a 2 point bid is being a bit overcautious, but otoh some people doing the shuttle escorts lists are also starting to experiment with different configurations beyond the default.

Last tournament I went to there were only a couple Palp Aces lists and a single guy running Jumpmasters at all, but now that everyone has had a chance to see how the Hoth Open shook out I'm expecting to see more of both tomorrow. Everything else I'll take it as it comes.

Since you're running Predator, I'd go with R2 Astromech. If you were running PTL, BB-8 all day. Likewise, if you end up running Opportunist (for whatever reason), R2 Astromech. It's such a magnificent one point.

I actually used to use Opportunist on Wedge, and in fact I'm pretty sure it was you that suggested it in the first place, using Wes to set up the shot and all :v: From what I recall the conclusion we agreed on is that Opportunist, if you can set it up, offers greater potential spike damage but that Predator is more consistent and reliable, and also doesn't lock you into a cycle of clearing stress.

Corbeau posted:

I probably should yeah. I think I'll stick with the R2 for now and try to get some practice games in using BB-8/PtL to see how I like it on a T65.

Strobe

GW BRAINWORMS CREW
Indeed. That said, if you're running Dutch in your list Opportunist will also put out more consistent damage at the cost of restricting future moves. Not by maneuver speed, since R2 Astromech will still be helping with that, but with having to stay within a certain range of Dutch.

I don't use it anymore because I fly XXX and not XXY, but I can see how it'd still perform well.

Kai Tave
Jul 2, 2012

Generally I have Dutch hand off TLs to Wes if possible since Wedge has the Predator reroll, so that way I can try and squeeze the most out of both of'em and save the focus for defense.

And anyway, Opportunist is 4 points, so.

There's also an Escalation tournament on the 30th that I've been seriously entertaining the notion of building an XXXXX list for, but I would actually need to buy two more T65s in order to do so.

The last Escalation Tournament I went to I ended up flying Wedge, Luke, Wes, Horton, and Cracken. The starting 60 point round with Luke and then Wedge with Predator is possibly the meanest 60 points in the game.

Wedge plus Luke lets you fit Predator on Wedge in round 1, and it eats everything alive at that level. People running big ships will have a lovely TIE or Z-95 along for the ride and Wedge can just eat it alive to give you a 2v1 with two X-wings against a lightly built large base ship.

Second round I added Horton and gave Luke R2-D2.

Third round I added Cracken, and handed out some upgrades, saved some points for next round.

Fourth round I added Wes with stressbot and VI.

It murdered everything with five ships all PS8+. I ended up coming in second that tournament after a loss in the second round against an Interceptor list where Luke and Soontir spent 45 minutes circling each other without either of them being able to deal and keep up any damage whatsoever on the other party and we went to time. I lost by 3 points. :argh:

Hmm, and this would work with all the models I have too...so something like:

60 points
Wedge Antilles
-Predator

Luke Skywalker

90 points
Wedge Antilles
-Predator
-R2 Astromech
-Integrated Astromech

Luke Skywalker
-Lone Wolf
-R2-D2
-Integrated Astromech

Horton Salm

117 points
Wedge Antilles
-Predator
-R2 Astromech
-Integrated Astromech

Luke Skywalker
-Lone Wolf
-R2-D2
-Integrated Astromech

Horton Salm
-Twin Laser Turret

Airen Cracken

149 points
Wedge Antilles
-Predator
-R2 Astromech
-Integrated Astromech

Luke Skywalker
-Lone Wolf
-R2-D2
-Integrated Astromech

Horton Salm
-Twin Laser Turret

Airen Cracken

Wes Janson
-R3-A2
-Veteran Instincts
-Integrated Astromech

I'd actually like to slap the EPT bot, Deadeye, Chips, and a pair of Protorps on Horton instead of a TLT but I did the math and it's a bit too expensive to do so without giving up the stressbot on Wes, but maybe it would be worthwhile.
