They are removing quirks and modules, refunding you the cbills and xp and work them into a new skill tree that looks to be a horrible grind compared to the current skill tree.

Compared to the current tree its significantly more but you dont have to do it 2 more times on variants you dont like anymore. So you're spending a bit more time and significantly less CB since there are fewer DHS taxes to pay.

Again, I would wait until it gets on PTS before getting too concerned about the cost of the trees. That video had listings for weapon skills for hardpoints the Mech shown didn't have.

Each Mech is supposed to have its own tree too so this looked like a generic version to show what's possible rather than what each Mech will actually have. If it shows up as shown in the video then start up the :pgi: I guess?

Oh, if the trees are unique then I guess it's not that different from quirks other than that you have to buy them.

Oh god why does it burn?!
The idea seems to be quirks you customize and level to fit your playstyle, as filtered through what the mech has available.

lol @ new players that are going to be running up against the grognards that are able to run 30% more mech than them.

I hope they give the mechs just a basic default nonoptimized not-quirk loadout that can make them competitive. Making it suck to be a new player even more would be terrible for any attempt at growing the player base.

This is a problem, but it's not like it doesn't exist already. Any mech with double basics is vastly superior to one that doesn't due to heat alone, and that's before you get into speed tweak.

Yeah, but this widens the gap. Imagine a fresh vindicator with no quirks fighting against one that has the combination soup of quirks + modules + skills that this skill tree system is replacing. Currently a mech loaded out with modules and skills gets 15ish% across the board for things like cooling, heat capacity, speed, acceleration, weapon cooldowns, etc. If those quirk baselines are getting the hatchet then the stat floor is being dropped out from underneath a whole lot of the mechs that have to be heavily quirked to be competitive with their counterparts.

Most of these things I see running around have XL engines which seems completely dumb so this one doesn't and it's still fast with lots of ammo.

Obsolete is a trait that means "any replacement parts have to be custom made at great expense." As a one-off prototype built entirely as a vanity piece, the Nergal was automatically obsolete the moment it was finished.

It appeared during Nergal Reactor where it was revealed on Turn 4. It kicks a Summoner's leg off and spikes another Clanner through the cockpit with its lance.

Sarna.net is blocked at work but you can search for 'quirks' and it should get you the list. I just list hardened armor as a quirk since it effectively doubles a `Mech's armor and hinders piloting tests.

I think the obvious solution to the trial mech problem is to give the trial mechs a 'champion' treatment where they have a set amount of skills that compliment the loadout.

The added bonus is that after playing a trial and accumulating some xp, if you buy the mech (new player point of view) you will have some idea where to level it, and not be totally boned. This keeps that same 'functionality' that exists now when you upgrade from a trial mech.

Think about this: despite the special snowflakes, and uber murdermets, etc. most xp is divided among multiple chassis, due to the old system of having to basic 3.

With the new system, players wanting to achieve the same level of performance that they had pre-patch will have every incentive to spend on premium (and even xp conversion if that still exists, somehow) just to bridge the gap.

Add in a skill reset that either costs MC or re-ups your incentive to buy premium, I think it's possible there is more extraction per customer in this model.

Hah, holy poo poo, get hosed PGI. This just kills any experimentation. There will be zero reason to build anything but the approved known good metamech builds because the cost of fixing your mistakes will be prohibitive.

It's not like I'm totally opposed to spending on this game either. My nostalgia for fake robots has gotten me to get drunk and stupid with my wallet more than once. Paying to re-spec is just loving slimy though.
