A garbage can lid with a hole in the center works pretty well for automatic transmission drain pans. It's obviously a bit easier with a lift, but it does work up on ramps, too.

Just got SLO RICE back from the shop. Last week I did new calipers, Hawk rotors and pads. This week the shop did new clutch, chromoly flywheel, trans snout sleeve, and fresh rubber on the powdercoated OEM wheels. The clutch was original with 222k miles so it was time for a new one. Despite the fact that it wasn’t slipping, there was almost zero friction material left on it and the flywheel had big heat marks, which was giving me some chatter. In the past six months this stupid car had also gotten all new rear brakes/calipers, a new OEM turbo, Invidia catless up-pipe, Mishimoto intercooler hoses, Perrin silicon intake, rust repair on the fenders and probably some other odds and ends because I can’t bear to part with it. Just an oil change on my wife's Escape that involved a trip to the store for a filter. I felt the brakes are going on it so I grabbed some fluid as I owe it a brake fluid change too. I pulled the snow tires off and inspected the pads and the passenger side inside pad is down to 3/32. I went ahead and greased up the pins to limp it through while I order new pads. I also noticed the front tires wear more on the inside so I'm suspecting the struts are worn out causing more wear as the car is dropping. This might not be right as it seems to be a common issue with Escapes of this style, but at 100k it's probably due anyway and it'll give me a chance to inspect all the mounts. The real tragedy in all this was I just ordered some small stuff from RockAuto this morning, I could have saved on shipping!

I was at 203k on the original on my old car, but it's probably been recycled into aluminum cans by now. It was chattering pretty bad when cold by that point. KYOON GRIFFEY JR posted:also if ATF gets toasted it is extremely unpleasant too My first car... the first time I checked the transmission fluid, it was black and had the consistency of tar. When I finally dropped the pan... I scraped about 3 inches of sludge and shavings out of the pan. It shifted a lot better after a few changes, but eventually lost reverse, and was trying to lose 3rd when I got rid of it (had to take your foot off the gas for it to upshift into 3rd, otherwise it just acted like it was in neutral). That C6 was a pretty tough bastard though.

The interior still looks new, and the body was really straight except for the creeping front (wtf Subaru) fender rust. I briefly thought about selling it about a year ago but I can’t bear to get rid of it. I’ll never find another one like it in manual.

Being that I’m out of the country for work means two things: one, I make more money and two, I have nothing to spend it on. Except car parts, apparently. I ordered blackout trim for my Chevy SS along with eibach springs and paintable door handles to get rid of the rest of the chrome and a bit of wheel gap. Even though the door handles have a GM part number, GM in the US cannot order them. So I had to resort to eBay and order them from an Australian store. Now I’m stuck, I can either go the NA route and get a mild cam to make ~450whp... OR get a supercharger and make ~650whp with a much higher likelihood of blowing it the gently caress up. Help me be sensible, automotive insanity.

Got my new wheels on, side skirts, front lip, H4 headlight housings, and got it running right so I can break in the new engine. Built 4A-GE, going turbo at some point but keeping it n/a for now. Also picked up my custom 222D-style engine lid made by Woodsport in the UK, looks pretty great. Can't wait to actually get it mounted. Not sure if I want to color match it red, or paint it black to keep with the 2-tone wing. What do you guys think? Also need to figure out how to mount it. Maybe hinge it from the bottom so it swings down? Either that or hinge it on the top so it swings up, and use some gas struts to hold it up. They look OEM, so may be a good idea to pull the entire trim panel and make sure everything is plugged into something back there. Like maybe the HVAC controls. As I recall, there are also several modules under that center stack on Hondas, too.

I attempted to find a coolant leak today. I was unsuccessful. No previous (significant?) coolant leaks. Had the car in the shop for an oil pan gasket and front main seal. They suggested I replace the accessory belt and oil filter/cooler housing gaskets. I deferred to later because the gaskets don't look like a hard job and I just did the belt like 3k miles ago (previous shop has warranty on it). I assume they said to re-do the belt because they had to take it off to do the front main seal and there are probably several one-time-use things on there. Car seemed fine at shop. When I got home 30 miles later belt was lightly chirping. I think not a big deal, I'll do the gaskets in a couple weekends when I have free time, get the belt re-done and be good as new. The next day I drive 6 miles to work and I get a low coolant level warning as I park. I think it's kind of odd, but maybe the shop had to move some lines and didn't top it off when they were done. Get home and the next morning I fill it up. As I pull in to work I've got a low coolant level warning again. When I get to the car in the afternoon to leave there's coolant on the ground, maybe 10oz. Drive home get it up on the blocks, take off the under piece to see if I can see something below. Let it cool down, fill it up again. Nothing on the ground. Warm it up, nothing on the ground, nothing visible. Let it cool down, and still nothing. No visible smoke and the exhausts doesn't smell sweet at all. Now I'm sitting here with no idea what the gently caress to do. How can the leak be serious enough to go from full to the level earning but when I'm looking at it not a single drop? Now I'm doubting myself on stupid things like maybe I didn't tighten the expansion tank cap all the way this morning... E: now that I think about it, I didn't pop the hood when I got to work. So it's possible it was just a loose expansion tank cap... Guess I'll bolt it back up, drive it around with a jug of coolant in the trunk, and hope for the best. E2: search continues but I think I found the answer. I did see coolant on ground after driving in. Popped hood. Steam coming from expansion tank cap, which I'm 99 percent it's supposed to be completely sealed, so that may be the suspect. Also it seemed weird putting it on as it didn't seem like it was going in all the way. Should be a cheap fix, just gotta figure out what exactly is wrong with it The Big Jesus fucked around with this message at 19:14 on Apr 5, 2019 |

Swapped in the last motor mount (gearbox side) and put in new OEM spark plugs. Good news is that the mount needed changing, and changing plugs takes 15min (I timed it lol). Bad news is that I still get stutter and shudders. They mainly come when letting off the gas or when at between 1.5-3k rpms. Getting a bit long in the tooth. Gap after removing last bolt, supported by the jack at the same position it was before I started: Edit: Also clean the throttle body: ..and the old plugs. Posted in the general thread that my wife had been complaining about a front end rattle in her Elantra. I heard it and it sounded like an end link or something so I wasn't too rushed. That was a couple weeks ago. Last week I finally jacked it up and found the bottom coil of one of the front springs rusted through, broken, and dangling (the rattle) while the leftover spring was jammed through the bottom of the strut. Whoops. Also noticed the front right corner was a couple inches lower than the rest of the car. I'm a bad husband. Ordered a couple quick struts and slammed them in today. Super easy job, only took like 15 minutes per corner. Was kind of annoying that I had to take both wiper arms and the cowl cover off to get to the top strut nuts. Also changed the oil since it hadn't been done since last year when it got a new engine under warranty. Rotated the tires too. Noticed the brake pads have almost nothing left so I'll do a front brake job soon too. And Rock Auto did NOT send a magnet with this order. I am displeased. They better send one with the brake parts. opengl fucked around with this message at 21:03 on Apr 7, 2019 |
