Are you me? I have exactly the same one except I've been in this flat for a bit longer. Had its annual service last week and got the usual "we're rapidly running out of replacement parts so if anything breaks you're probably hosed" from the engineer.

They're also horrifically inefficient compared to pretty much anything more modern so I've got a guy/gal coming tomorrow to give an estimate for replacing it. My wallet is already crying...

This has been the case for at least 5 if not 10 years though. Remember disgraced former defence secretary Liam Fox who held several other cabinet positions after his disgrace?

Remember Jeremy Hunt facing precisely zero consequences for the single biggest strike by medical workers in the last at least 50 years, possibly ever?

In fact, Fox was probably, looking back, the trial balloon to an extent. If he coudl get back in to high level positions and nobody would actively give a gently caress, they knew anyone could, so they stopped carig.

It's older than that, I took politics A level at the tail end of new Labour and my teacher was an Italian communist.
Even then he was talking about the death of ministerial responsibility as apparently Michael Horward iirc didn't resign over summat that happened as home sec, either that or he was the last person to.

But yeah the honour system was basically our only real check on MPs and they've ignored it for 20 years at least.

My favourite was the bottom-nibbling curry alien who lived down the bog and attacked your bum if you had had a curry the night before.
I used to buy it as a 'treat' on a Sunday years ago until it turned into more porn and less aliens - Tina Small and her 88" bosom who entered a nunnery or some such.

Then there was this gem which I think was posted ITT at some point in the last couple of years:

Most of our electricity comes from gas. Currently (as of right now) about 41% from CCGT (44% yesterday evening) and a negligible amount from other types such as OCGT and microgeneration.

So when you run your electric heater you're burning about as much gas as running a gas boiler once the plant efficiency and transmission losses are accounted for, but also paying for all the infrastructure in between instead of a big pipe.

We really should have gone nuclear in the 80s/90s instead of gas boom BS.

Yeah we chatted about this during heatpump-chat, I was thinking about it again this morning because I WFH in the top floor room of my house, which is the only room without a feed from the gas-fired hot air heating system. But as the boiler (?) for that is on the landing outside this room, I think it's still cheaper to heat the house with the gas, and just enjoy the spare warmth from the system, rather than burn a couple of kW of electricity all day. Especially as my wife's WFH too, in a room with a hot air feed.

Sorry about your kitten.

I recall attending an important meeting with my boss with another NHS body that was expected to be acrimonious. The Chief Exec of the other body walked in late and had obviously been crying. She apologized as her cat had died that morning. I felt instant rapport and commiserated - the meeting went much better than expected. On the way back to our office my boss said 'if all she's got to worry about is a dead cat... blah blah blah' at which point I stopped listening as how can anyone be so heartless?

I was devastated when my cats of 16 and 17 years passed away. Most of my friends said sad things. One of my friends though who had never owned a cat then got one and when that cat died she contacted me to say she had had no idea what I had gone through until her kitty passed on.

Haha yeah mines needed 2 new thermocouples in the past 10 years, bout a, tenner each time but that's it. Runs fine mostly, central heating is playing up but i expect its the pump, not the actual boiler itself.

I've saved up enough that i could afford to replace it but it would be so dumb to do it after 10 years unless its proper hosed.

Just very weary of back boilers, the only place I've seen them outside my flat is my grandads house in the 90s!

It would be nice to get rid of it and get rid of the cold and hot water tanks too. Maybe one day

We've got one in our flat that we only ever turn on when the boiler's hosed. It smells like poo poo and I'm fairly sure I get a headache from it, but all the detectors are fine and it's been serviced or whatever so... guess it's good.

of note, for those unfamiliar, in Scotland at least anyone "who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission" can vote in both council *AND* Scottish Parliament elections, so if you know someone living in Scotland but who doesn't think they have the vote, tell them they can probably register now and vote in the May Holyrood elections.

This is why cats always tend to go to the person in the room who doesn't like cats, too - they're the one not looking at the cat, which to a cat says "Hey I'm the only one here not challenging you".

Well that and the fact cats are arseholes.

That was my first reaction too, but on reflection I can totally see why it's not enough:

So far, he's only apologised for stuff that he could have done better. What he hasn't done is take full personal responsibility for literally all antisemitism, thereby taking all sins upon himself and absolving all of the right wingers, like an actual, levitican scapegoat.

Not entirely sure it would be a very good idea for him to do that.

It's mind-blowing if you ever wade into the Twitter threads, they literally are full of stuff like people posting pictures of anti-Semitic graffiti and blaming Corbyn.

In the minds of the people melting down about this he has genuinely become the living avatar of all anti-semitism from all sides of the political spectrum.

The English press stirring up antisemitism so they could claim that Corbyn had increased antisemitism might be the worst thing they've done. It's a high bar though.

Also he would lose the financial and administrative backing of the Labour Party. Even though, according to the tabloids, he “lives in a million pound house” it costs quite a bit to run successfully as an independent. Although if anyone could crowd source election funds I suspect he could.
