Now find him a disc with sub-tracks. My dad's first CD player from 1986 is the only one I ever saw that had them on the display

My emotional connection with certain songs is from when I heard them on my staticky mono clock-radio on a distant FM station at 6:00 AM to wake me up for school, and half their appeal was that I couldn't hear more than the vaguest hint of their melody

Getting a pristine recording of it later just made me think "uhh this actually kind of sucks"

Not quite, it's recording, mixing and mastering. Hence why the first two can change on CDs - if the second letter meant mastering, then it'd always be D since CD mastering is digital by nature. I have no idea why I remember this, those codes were long phased out when I started actively listening to music on CDs. Probably saw it on old CD cases and looked it up once.

My mistake and thanks for the correction. I never thought DDA would be a thing but nowadays we have the revival of vinyl and even cassettes but all the recording and mixing is done on a computer, so here we are. Records that have all that 128kbit MP3 warmth.

When I'm testing new speakers or headphones I tend to use stuff I am super familiar with, but I don't have some specific songs I always test. I usually open up my music library and jump around from there, although I'll usually use AC/DC Back in Black as one thing to test. I have not bought any album more times than Back in Black - I've owned it across multiple mediums over the years.

I'm also not an audiophile.

Theres certain albums or songs that where either ripped in the early days of itunes or torrented with odd corruption in the song that sound really bizarre to me if I hear the clean high rate versions these days. System of a Downs Toxicity was given to me by a mate in all of its 64kb/s quality and many of the songs just don't sound right without their highnotes clipped and staticy.

The version of Lights and Sounds I downloaded in 2004 started to loop at the end for some reason (playing the opening riff at the end of the song) and for the longest time I thought that's just how the song went.

Oh wow. I forgot all about the brief era where I had no idea what certain songs actually sounded like as a result of downloading intentionally ruined copies. I do not remember what the song was, but something from that era had like a 30ish-second very slow build to singing a line or so, and then presumably went on to a normal song, but the copy I had just looped that four times. I seriously thought that was just how the song was, and kind of liked it

"Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley also will gently caress up a mediocre sub too - if it plays that bass intro cleanly, it's a keeper.

Back in the day of making a mix tape for the car, it was easy to overestimate how much space was left on a side, causing the song you were recording to be interrupted when the tape ran out. If it was at least most of the way through the song, I'd just say "eh" and leave it like that, instead of going back and recording over it with something shorter.

And so, to this day, there are a few songs that I'm always mildly surprised when they don't cut off at that exact spot.

It sounds like something a label or just a jerk would create in order to pollute file sharing services with songs that looked to to be around the correct file size and length but were just garbage.

I think I remember that being a thing. Along with oddly named files/misspelled band names to defeat filters that Napster added.

My favourite was when Madonna uploaded a bunch of tracks off her new album, but all the mp3s were just her saying "What the gently caress do you think you're doing?"

Then somebody hacked madonna.com and put up clean rips of all the tracks with the title "This is what I think I'm doing"
