And I guess he is correct? Using 2011 numbers from Wikipedia:

Wisconsin makes 1.3 million tons of cheese a year.

The United States makes 5.2 million metric tons of cheese a year, so after Wisconsin secedes to join the national rankings under President Walker they will still be first with 3.9 million tons.
#2 is Germany with 2.0 million tons a year.
#3 is France with 1.9 million
Then Wisconsin at #4
Then #5 is Italy, with 1.1 million.

Good job Scott?

France is better than Wisconsin.

Kevin Williamson, a writer at National Review, presents the Republican Establishment's view of Mr. Trump

quote:

Witless Ape Rides Escalator.

Donald Trump may be the man America needs. Having been through four bankruptcies, the ridiculous buffoon with the worst taste since Caligula is uniquely positioned to lead the most indebted organization in the history of the human race.

Donald Trump, being Donald Trump, announced his candidacy at Trump Plaza, making a weird grand entrance via escalator — going down, of course, the symbolism of which is lost on that witless ape. But who could witness that scene — the self-made man who started with nothing but a modest portfolio of 27,000 New York City properties acquired by his millionaire slumlord father, barely out of his latest bankruptcy and possibly headed for another one as the casino/jiggle-joint bearing his name sinks into the filthy mire of the one U.S. city that makes Las Vegas look respectable, a reality-television grotesque with his plastic-surgery-disaster wife, grunting like a baboon about our country’s “brand” and his own vast wealth — and not see the peerless sign of our times?
What a great title. Oh, this is going to be a fun next six months

Rand Paul's bold new idea is a totally unworkable tax scheme.

quote:

Sen. Rand Paul is pledging to “blow up the tax code and start over” with a federal flat tax of 14.5%, as he seeks to boost his support among conservatives in the Republican presidential field.

...

The plan would eliminate payroll taxes on workers, as well as gift and estate taxes and all duties and tariffs. His flat tax would apply to all personal income, including wages, salaries, dividends, capital gains, rents and interest. It would exempt the first $50,000 of income for a family of four.

The plan would eliminate many deductions but preserve two widely used ones, for mortgage interest and charitable contributions. One of the few targeted tax breaks it would retain is the earned-income tax credit, a wage supplement for lower-income working families.

For businesses, Mr. Paul would adopt the same 14.5% rate. Corporations currently pay at rates up to 35%, while small-business owners’ profits are taxed at rates as high as 39.6%.

To further accelerate economic growth, Mr. Paul called for allowing the expensing of all capital purchases—deducting the cost from income immediately—and eliminating the current complicated system of depreciation.

...

In an interview, Mr. Paul said the most distinctive element of his plan compared with other flat-tax proposals is the idea of repealing the payroll taxes on workers that are used to fund Social Security and Medicare, leaving more money in workers’ pockets.

“It shows that we have something we can offer to the working class,” he said. “The question we have for Hillary Clinton is: How are you going to help the working class?”

That aspect of the plan could leave the Kentucky senator open to charges of underfunding entitlement programs for seniors that are supported by payroll taxes. Mr. Paul said his plan would “fully fund” Social Security and Medicare because it specifies that incoming business-tax revenues go first to fund those programs.

I don't even have anything snarky to say about this. It's just head-to-toes idiotic.

Shame about underfunding the payroll tax thing, because there's the core of an interesting idea in that: would a high (Definitely higher than 14.5%) flat tax rate, combined with a high standard deduction, work? Would it even be desirable? I've seen the idea floated on the forums before.

You're basically asking would a two-bracket progressive tax work depending on the numbers, and um, yeah it would work. Many states already have this structure for their state income tax. It would basically shift an even larger share of the tax burden onto middle-income earners.

This is actually extremely common to see - it's just that it almost always happens when the fact that it hurts the middle class most is nonobvious. Since most people don't understand what the actual effects of nearly any tax policy would be, this definitely falls under that category.

He's sued people into keeping quiet about it, plus his dad was a legit successful businessman so people keep giving Donald HUGE loans. I think I read somebody gave him a 300 million dollar loan he's never paid back. Plus, there's one thing Trump is very good at: self-promotion. You tell people a lie big enough.....

He, himself, is not a publicly-traded company so he can say whatever he wants about how much money he has. Image is the only thing that matters. He lives a lavish lifestyle so therefore people assume he's successful based on whichever metrics people are using to decide that.

He is a prime example of how hard it is to go from rich to not rich in certain circles. He has everything he has because he's white and his father was rich. He's friends with people who are willing to throw business deals his way in order to support his lifestyle. If he goes bankrupt it doesn't really matter since he can call up some guy he went to a prestigious kindergarten with and get his name put on a building for a fee that allows him to justify being lent more money to continue his lifestyle.

People bitch about Paris Hilton being famous for nothing, but Trump is OG Grand Master at that schtick. He was already rich so he wrote some books about what a great business man he is, and it created an ouroboros of debt that allows him to pay people the exorbitant amount of money it takes to tell him his hair looks good.

He's a ponzi scheme, but the people who are loaning him the money are his friends who want to make use of the brand he's cultivated so they don't care.

The GOP are the ones putting this in the political realm. Every single bit of this sentence is twisted.

If you want to (as a prolife Catholic like Biden might) state that you disagree with the Church about something, say it. I believe that many Catholics would say they would not personally choose abortion but they won't force that belief on others.

It is not okay to say, "My religion informs me morally but I don't believe morals have any place informing my policy. Especially when it comes to how we treat those in poverty, one of the few issues Jesus was unequivocally clear on."

Thank you for this.
