Oh my goodness. The bird thread is on fire right now. I am new to the Washington DC area. Anyone have any good recommendations for rescues that may have some cockatiels? Looking for some potatoes of my own now that I am settling in. And maybe a silly question: what do you do about birds and fans/air conditioners? Is there even a concern here?

VioletCorsica posted:Oh my goodness. The bird thread is on fire right now. We run the AC 24/7 9-10 months out of the year here in oklahoma, the only problem we have is that it dries us out, and all the birds out, and makes the dander problem a million times worse. I recommend frequent baths and a humidifier. If you're using a fan, make sure it's shrouded , with tight bar spacing and not running when the birds are out of the cage.

Galahs are great. They are dopey as heck in the wild but they love being pets and can learn to speak really well. I grew up in the bush so I knew lots of people who had a pet galah. Find injured galah (it got hit by a slow-moving car... again...), take it in, feed it up while it heals, be sad when it comes time to release dopey bird who has learnt how to say "hello" and "fucken arse m8", decide to keep because it's just so cute If you're lost in the bush it's a good idea to look for groups of galahs as they generally flock around areas with surprise water.

The pair of galahs that live in our suburb were foraging on the front lawn the other morning as I went to work. I'll try and get a photo next time.
