This update closes one of the lingering mysteries -- namely, how some of the Veil/etc equipment can interact on either side of the Scratch. B1 still "exists" in Universe B's Bilious Slick, concurrently with B2. So, the universe frog exists in, like, the 12th dimension. If you believe String Theory, anyways.

Man, Red Miles (the song) reminds me so much of Drakengard, it's frightening. The entire album is fantastic, though.

B1 is the A-side of a record, and B2 is the B-side, and they're different but related songs. Still a single object, and if you snap it in half, both sides break. The A-side was scratched and now the B-side is playing.

This metaphor can extend a surprising distance. It's certainly no coincidence that "scratch" was the precise term used, nor that the symbol of a record was important even from early on. I would go so far as to call the terms "A-side" and "B-side" relevant, if possibly misleading.

Per UU's explanation, it seems it's theoretically possible for there to be more than two iterations of a single universe, comparable to more than two "sides" of a record in higher-dimensional spaces, though we've seen no method whereby such a thing may be attained.

Music boxes, like the ones used as the symbol of time in the troll universe, use cylinders rather than discs, and therefore only have one side; however, they could in theory be the kind that uses paper reels wrapped around a spool, rather than a metal rod with small tines or a wax cylinder with grooves. Only the latter kind can really be scratched in any meaningful sense, however.

It was pretty obvious the other kids didn't have any real-world friends so they didn't really know anyone else to save, and we also happen to know that they didn't have much time to get into the medium either, but if they'd been interested in saving lives John could've tried rounding up some of his own neighbours or Dave could've tried the apartments next door. I know, I know, practically speaking they were unlikely to go with some kid who's convinced they can escape a meteorite, but the option was open and unacknowledged.

The carapace people here feel like they're a Chekhov's gun only retroactively - if we weren't seeing them now and Roxy was just trying to save themselves we'd all dismiss it as just part of her background but now since she's trying to save them it must be that they were introduced in the first place to foreshadow that she'd want to try to rescue them.

Homestuck's full of stuff that may or may not be foreshadowing and we'll only know after the fact. Arguing about what it all means is probably our single favourite pass-time.

Side note: Fifteen carapace people are visible in the shot, although the line appears to trail between two buildings implying more. None of them have unique character models so none of them are explicit individuals. This could be a pretty sizable population. If they're not all killed by red miles in a minute to Roxy's dismay, I sort of wonder how they'll all pack in to her room.

I meant it from a narrative viewpoint. As far as the narrative was concerned, Dave might as well not have had any neighbours, and John rarely ever saw his busy neighbours IIRC, and none of them ever appeared. Same deal with Jane. Whereas the carapaces were shown, and Roxy was seen interacting with them. When you look at it as a world, yeah, John had neighbours, Dave probably too. When you look at it as a story, the carapaces in Roxy's town were infinitely more important than John's and Dave's neighbours because they were actual characters.

With all UU's talk of rules and how she's afraid of breaking them (and the strong hinting that uu admires/is like/will become Lord English), I'm reminded of the apparently brutal way LE treats young girls in his service. It's getting so stark at this point that I'm beginning to think it almost must be a mislead.

But they totally have something to do with Lord English though. Right?

The best part of that whole question-answering session was how many times Hussie took some guy's three paragraph question and said what amounted to: "Yeah that is about right." People are gonna be pissed about that, I bet.

Also: Some guy apparently wrote a 16-page essay about Homestuck?? Or I am reading that wrong and I'm just being dumb.

Oh yeah no doubt, and it's the practical answer, but it's also something no one's ever talked about or considered. John's never stopped to say "If I'd had another minute maybe I could've gotten old man Gregson from next door into the house in time, but he's dead now".

The story's just rarely focused on the idea that whole planets are getting wiped out and everyone on them is killed and how that would affect someone, so seeing one of the players actively try to save others goes beyond "aw that's adorable Roxy's the best." It's pretty significant for the story to even acknowledge the players having attachment to their worlds and the people on them rather than quickly brushing them under the rug for the sake of narrative convenience. Again though, that might be just because the carapace people are sort of substitute-guardians for Roxy.
For the first act or so the "real world" (outside Sburb) of Homestuck was portrayed as strongly gamelike in it's own right - needing to use the captchalogues to do anything, only being named at the "start of the game", etc. In a game, random NPCs being slaughtered en-mass doesn't really matter. The fact that this effect has faded over time (with the real-world now being portrayed in a less game-like fashion) has caused some dissonance.

As for music, my favourite album is Vol 7 - aside from the bonus tracks, it feels the tighest and most coherent of any of the albums. My favourite individual track is probably Black, and my favourite theme to hear used is Beatdown (I love Clockstopper on Universe B).

I honestly think it's plausible that Hussie could land himself a gig on Cartoon Network or whatever. He's been proven to
1. Be able to write for a young age set and attract millions of fans who are like neurotically obsessed with his poo poo
2. Sustain incredibly long narratives without making them stale
3. Collaborate with lots of people simultaneously to make bigger stuff like merch, flashes and albums a reality
4. Avoid burning bridges at pretty much any cost? I love how every time there are a set of questions like these, at least one of them is trying to get Hussie to badmouth the fandom.

We've already had a partial explanation, though. B2 Jade adopted Lord English's name and symbols as her way of putting the Condesce on notice. The references thus far have been largely superficial--what we know about LE's character doesn't really mesh with Jake at all.

There's a good chance that we'll see Lord English's creation/rise and that most or all of the cast (including Jake) will have a hand in it one way or another, but being Lord English seems like a longshot.
