Yeah actual velociraptors looked like a cross between a lizard and a turkey. Based on the fossil record.

In the JP book Dr. Wu makes the point that they aren't making identical replicas of the real dinosaurs. They have the capability and the early ones were realistic, but they wanted to make the park profitable and give people what they want rather than reality. It's an illusion, if you will.

It's brought up in the rightfully maligned third movie, too, which did have a few good scenes. Doctor Grant keeps telling people who harass him about the Jurassic Park incident that Hammond's monsters were not dinosaurs, dinosaurs have never been resurrected, Hammond just whipped up a bunch of genetic chimera monsters that looked vaguely like dinosaurs and was counting on visitors to not know or care about the difference.

Cute thread, there has been a new addition to my house. Esme needed a new friend to annoy her, so please meet Cyrano de Purrgerac: Looking very handsome at the shelter.  I believe that's one of his siblings behind him.  It took some time for the medical staff to write the paperwork for me to take him home, so he wisely spent the time getting some important napping in. He was very nervous when he first came home, and spent a great deal of time hiding under my nightstand. However, he eventually became brave and ventured out:  He likes the bookshelf across from my bed. It gives him easy access to the bed for snuggling, while also keeping him out of the way of Esme, who is still being hissy.  Kittening is thirsty work!
