Well, Green Team did approach the Titans with an offer to fund them at the end of that comic. That's definitely an in to get a new young team book in after cancelling the others. Maybe if the title has the word Justice in it, it'll work this time :shrug:

Returning to happier times... I'm in the process of picking up the Morrison Deluxe JLA trades, and despite some weird concessions to editorial policies of the time (Hypolyta as Wonder Woman, the infamous electric Superman) I'm really enjoying them. Two questions I was hoping you guys could help me with:

1) The One Million stories aren't contained in the Deluxe editions. Does the cheap paperback version have what I need (I'd especially like a copy of the secret epilogue to All-Star Superman)? Or is the extra material in the omnibus strong enough additional to justify tracking down a reasonably priced copy?

2) I know Morrison based his roster on the Greek pantheon, and I've been trying to figure out which hero equals which God. Some are easy enough:
Supes = Zeus
Batman = Hades
WW = Hera
Aquaman = Poseidon
Green Lantern = Apollo
Flash = Hermes
Huntress = Artemis
Steel = Hephaestus
Oracle = Athena
Barda = Demeter
Orion = Ares
Plastic Man = Dionysus

...but that leaves me with Martian Manhunter and Zauriel/Hawkman. Any idea who they might be intended to represent? Or do they not fit the pattern?

The paperback has only the spine of the One Million story, which makes it a bit schizophrenic. It's not bad, but the omnibus would be my recommendation.

I'm not sure it was ever officially laid out, but I remember noted Classical scholars Wizard magazine making their best attempt at it back in the day.

You've got the twelve Olympians, i.e., the Dodekatheon, but there are still those two left over, huh? I would said Zauriel is Eros, since he was mainly motivated by love.

Martian Manhunter is harder, because the most significant god not in the Dodekatheon is Hestia/Vesta, and he is DEFINITELY not the goddess of the fireplace. If any of the members were Hestia, I would say Oracle just because she's the stay-in-one-place-hold-down-the-fort role, but Athena makes more sense for her.

Jeez, who else spent time on Olympus? Heracles? Persephone? Ganymede? Hebe? None of those are quite right for J'onn.

Wouldn't J'onn relate more to Wisdom than Oracle? Assuming we're taking wisdom to mean providing counsel and advice, which fits J'onn's role as the league's pseudo-psychiatrist.

I would not recommend the One Million omnibus unless you're really curious about how the writers and artists of the time played with the concept. I didn't read all of em, but I assume most didn't feed into Morrison's story in any meaningful way.
If I recall, all Morrison wrote were the four issues, the JLA one and a Secret Files and Origins epilogue or something like that later.
Does your thing include the Earth Two story with Quitely? Ya need that.

e: According to Wikipedia, the small collection collects 1M 1-4 and the Green Lantern, Resurrection Man, Starman and Superman: The Man of Tomorrow issues. That's weird.

Those are necessary books because a lot of the betrayal and Vandal Savage plots are in side books. Also Man of Tomorrow has Superman call out the Anti-Sun on the future equivalent of live national TV.

I'd buy that. Plus Athena ties into ideas of strategy as well, so that makes sense. So if you swap in J'onn for Athena and make Oracle goddess of the home base Hestia, I think you've got your team.

I can't find any of the interviews online (and it was long enough ago they may have all been print interviews) but from what I recall, Morrison ended up doing (at least) rough plots for nearly every issues of the DC One Million crossover. The one exception was Hitman, which I recall the directive being "just do whatever you think is funny." This makes a certain degree of sense, since the vast majority of DC's other books at the time featured JLA characters who tied into the main storyline, and by giving pretty strict marching orders to the teams writing Superman/Batman/Green Lantern/etc. avoided (to my recollection) any of the sort of dissonant stuff you see in Civil War and other crossovers where someone is an agonized humanist in one issue and basically a Nazi in the next.

Chuck Dixon is the guy I seem to recall grousing about it. I dug up a circa 1999 interview with him in Writers on Comic Scriptwriting where he complains about Morrison letting Batman interact with aliens and allowing Huntress onto the JLA (because he sees her as a fundamentally dangerous and insane person) but he never directly addressed DC1M except to say that "the DC One Million stories became a black hole that swallowed me up for months."

Oh wait, this book also has the interview with Morrison:

"[DC1M] was the biggest work I've ever done, because basically I plotted everything that month, every single comic except for Hitman. With that I just said, "Garth, take the piss," that was my plot. The rest of it was quite detailed. The Batman stuff, the Superman stuff was really detailed. I plotted something like sixty-four comics that month and wrote five of them."

Alternatively, don't bother with DC1M because I read it recently a couple years ago and thought it was largely "eh". It's a huge number of pages to tell a story that isn't particularly interesting and my memories of the art are that of largely quintessential 90s art.

It's really hard to tell if these are supposed to be all new characters or a re-jiggering of the original lineup. The original Forever People were four dudes and a girl, and this new image shows two dudes and two girls, so at least one person is dropped, and at least one dude is a girl now (which is fine).

I mean, none of them look like the originals, but conceivably the guy in the back could be Big Bear and the guy in front could be Vykin, though neither of them is quite like the original design. If you interpret the woman in front as having a hat and bandanna, she could be Serifan, but the woman in back looks more like Mark Moonrider than Beautiful Dreamer, so it's hard to tell what's up.

It will be interesting to see what the actual lineup is.

Mark is in the picture. He's the guy in the right-above-Big-Bear area.

Also, I'm crossing my fingers for something really goofy. There are four students from New Genesis, but the fifth member of the team is a human woman they befriend who is named Sarah Phan.

I'm presuming that's Moonrider behind Big Bear, in green and purple with the yellow thing over his crotch trying not to get sucked into whatever Infinity-Man is doing. He doesn't have the funky headgear but the rest is consistent. Dreamer needs to fire her hair stylist, though.

Girl in front gets Serifan's slot by process of elimination, I guess.

I like how godawful event tie-ins have sullied not one, but two comics I was reading from DC. Supergirl got mauled relentlessly by event tie-ins, and now Forever Evil causes JLA to gently caress up something like Stargirl standing up to Despero, and gaining the upper hand. Always awesome to know this cool thing I'm reading in this comic now suddenly didn't happen.
