Most modern cars these days are pretty reliable The only exception is Fiat and Chrysler, who are laughably terrible in pretty much any study of reliability

my dad taught me to drive by taking me out onto some back roads in his 92 F-150 i'm really not a truck guy by any means, but that was a fun. that was 15 years ago and my cousin has it, and still drives it. when he's finally done with it, i hope the truck works its way to a third-world war zone somewhere so it can get blown up by a russian attack helicopter.

Bum the Sad posted:Bullshit my Cadillac's Northstar V8 was leaking oil like a sieve and had to have all the gaskets replaced. It also had the starter motor between the cylinder banks and was poorly built. The Northstar was GM's attempt to make a V8 using fancy "modern" ideas like overhead cams. The LT/LS V8s use technology that GM has had almost 100 years to unfuck. (Something something pushrod has a good displacement vs. external volume ratio whatever)

People seem to equate reliability with "will technically continue to run and drive" but if the rest of the car falls apart around the drivetrain is it really that reliable? "Hmm yes my 01' Sunfire is very reliable! The windows don't roll up, the interior is in pieces, the A/C quit working sometime around 9/11, but it still hesitantly lurches forward when I step on the gas."

I had a 91 Cavalier when I was driving under my Learner's Permit. The body was immaculate metallic teal and literally hours after it reached 100,000 miles, it burst into flames.

My Man Shran posted:It also had the starter motor between the cylinder banks and was poorly built. The only really bad problem with the Northie is the oil leak issue between the upper and lower block and they fixed that by ~1999 or so. Other than that, they were very solid engines, built by GM's Premium engine division and ran well. They can start to pull the head studs slightly out of the block and lose head gaskets at high mileage(150-180kmiles), but that's about the extent of any issues. GM did a great job overdesigning the valvetrain and timing chain setup, issues with the top end are extremely rare. Every fuckin' online idiot likes to whine about the starter location, but they really don't take a tremendous amount of time to change, don't go bad very often, and guess what other motor has the starter in the same exact spot? The Toyoxus 4.0/4.5 V-8, and nobody bitches about that one. The main hassle with 'em is, like you said, that they're goddamn enormous and were never updated much. They came out in '91 and ran great compared to the existing SBC, but after the much tinier/more powerful LSx arrived, the handwriting was on the wall. Source: I'm a mechanic and serviced about a zillion old people's Caddys, plus owned a couple over the years.
