I also personally find the host inconsistency annoying. I feel like I never know who's talking or what their background is, which can be helpful in understanding biases or whatever.

I agree it's pretty hit and miss, so I always read the episode description first to see if it's something I could be interested in, but yeah, that guest on the Elections episode was top notch.

The Dig is in the middle of a 6 ep or so run right now focusing on europe, with one on the EU, one on the UK, one on France, one on Spain, and i think maybe ones on italy and/or germany. the first three of those have been released so far and were great

If any of you liked the Haitian revolution series I urge you to read one of Mike's primary source materials, 'The Black Jacobins' by CLR James. As well as being a structuralist(marxist) accout its a short gripping read that never forgets the humanity of its subjects.

I listened to the Alan moore ep. Remember that Adam Curtis interview where he talked about western leftists retreating to fiction and fantasy and a world view that divorced itself from materialism. this was kind of that thing made flesh lol.

Adam Curtis: Yes, it is deeply conservative—again, individuals lost in a dark world. But there is one writer who I think does transcend that—I mean, I think this is where Alan Moore is a genius, because he actually takes that dystopianism and uses it to create alternative realities, where you do manage to think in a new way.
HUO: Many artists keep telling me how they're very inspired by Alan Moore. He’s a total guru.

Adam Curtis: They’re right. I think he’s a genius. Because he is obviously driven by this idea that you could do really complicated things, both in narrative and in what you’re saying, yet do them in a really entertaining pop way. I would never compare myself to him because he is a sort of god, but I mean it's what I try and do—pop stuff, right? I do jokes. I use silly music. I have dancing animals, anything. But I try not to compromise in what I’m saying. I don’t simplify it. I mean, I simplify it, but I don’t degrade it. But he doesn’t, either. And the way he structures narrative is just incredible.

If you google Alan moore and Adam Curtis, Adam goes on and on about Moore in multiple interviews.

what are you talking about Moore is clearly talking about the way capitalism warps and alienates the mind through propaganda via advertising, Curtis would probably agree with him

"magic only exists within the mind" should have been a giveaway that it's a metaphor for how the world operates and that he doesn't literally believe in magic, if you need to have this spelled out for you idk

It's infuriating how people could seemingly listen to or read Alan Moore and not see how it's almost about the same things in the same manner as Adam Curtis. Or to go back, Guy Debord, et cet.

Wow yeah, I do feel silly now.

quote:

What Knight is describing is close to what Alan Moore writes about in "From Hell". That the human mind has extraordinary powers of imagination when it is free of the limitations of normal perception.

The present day system of power - that has replaced the old patronising authority - is a new kind of limitation. It treats human beings themselves as very simple machines. Instead of telling them what to do, as the old power used to, the new system increasingly uses computers to read data about what human beings want or feel. And then fulfils those needs.

What Stephen Knight and Alan Moore are pointing towards is something different. How the human imagination has the power to conceive of worlds that have never existed before. And if that imagination can be integrated into a new kind of politics - then those worlds could be brought into existence.

It's unquantifiable and untrustworthy. But it's full of potential.

Yeah but when you say or hear that you should be aware of what he means by magic. He means that the complexity of the mind is irreducible and sometimes only accessible in esoteric ways, not that it's possible to levitate or breathe fire
