yesterday I went back to the synth store to pick up the second hand novation launchpad pro they had for a good price (as an aside, this type of thing is exactly the bit of kit I've been wanting to make Ableton Live more useable. Just having a sequencer finally is amazing. Still learning all the stuff it can do) and to try out the LXR-02 again, this time with the aim of building something from scratch as opposed to just changing up the pattern and tweaking the sounds of what was already on there when I went last time. It... did not go so well. It is actually kind of obtuse for doing that. Good to know and will save me some money. And actually now that I've got the launchpad, I don't really need a drum machine because IT HAS A SEQUENCER! How the hell have I gone this long without having a sequencer of any sort.
If the taxman is good to me I may pick up their floor model Moog Subsequent 25 because it's a good $250 cheaper than even the used models on Reverb. I don't really have anywhere to put it, but I'll cross that bridge if I come to it.

LOL, amazing. Charlie does love his doots. Awesome you've got some sequencing action!
I lean heavily on every crutch or "cheat" I can find. Quantizers, rhythm generators, sequencers, generative patching, whatever can get me past the big frustration roadblocks, and onto making some sounds. Learning to play the keys is still a goal, but one I'm trying to bypass for the short term.

The proposal: I'll try to do some drone music
The spectacular failure of a result: https://soundcloud.com/sperimentaldoots/230416-0243a

Fun to make, but didn't go at all as planned.

i did learn to play keys for a while, but i find myself doing generative stuff more than anything. quantisers are not a cheat, they're great! set them to scales or chords that you like and squirt some random poo poo in there. structure that with generative rhythms. bam!

I learned to play piano as a kid, so that never really left me (though I'm no pianist). Quantization is a very useful tool, but I do like to have at least a couple of non-quantized parts in my tracks to get that loosey goosey feeling.

Yeah! Sam's a real mad lad.

Here's a patch I've been putting together. Still a work in progress. I've got room in the mixers for one more percussive voice, and a channel on grids still empty. I've just been messing around with what kind of sounds I could get with using a second oscillator with a strega. I tuned the Strega a couple octaves higher than the other oscillator, they're both doing some cross-fm, and using another audio source through a VCA as CV for the strega's VCA (It's bipolar, so I can use it as a ring mod)
I was also taking a stab at seeing what I could do to get stereo out of a mono signal, so I took a mult out of the mixer, sending one signal to one of the delay inputs, and the second one went through a pitch shifter with the tiniest amount of shift I could dial in, and a bit of wobble and flutter, then to the other input of the delay, which was set to ping pong mode. I could probably bring the delay times a bit closer together. But I'm happy discovering what I can do with this stuff so far.

ETA: warning I was messing with levels, and there is a sharp, sudden volume increase just after 2 minutes in.

Found some really interesting synth software here https://www.giorgiosancristoforo.net/ I think they all have try before you buy, so you make sure it works on your computer. I gave the bento noise box thingy a whirl, and it gave me a popup and cut off the sound after 10 minutes. Fun stuff. Think I might pick up one of them, but haven't really looked at all of them yet.

More fresh beats, with a drone voice.
If you're looking for a Canadian Eurorack kit maker, check out cctv.fm
I bought a used vco module from cicada sound, and was doing some research while waiting for it to arrive, and discovered it's made by a company on the same island as I live on. I called the shop to ask how low a frequency it could go down to, hoping for a dual vco / lfo, and they put me on the phone with the guy who designed it.
It is the quadtec 101. pretty neat dual digital oscillator module with quad panning outputs. It has an internal lfo for panning the mix of the two oscillators across 4 separate outputs, as well as a noise generator output. Both of the oscillators are digital wavetable based, and you can scan through the waveforms with knobs, but not by cv.
low price for what it offers, for sure.

you thinking of building your own case? Or looking for an affordable starter case? I'd keep an eye on cicada sound for their used gear, have a look at nightlife electronics, reverb maybe? facebook marketplace sometimes has stuff pop up. If you're putting together a case full on diy, you're going to need a power supply too, not just a box and rails. I think I saw a shop in Quebec somewhere sells Doepfer stuff, and they list a build your own case kit on reverb.
yeah, it was these guys https://www.technopolismusicgear.com/ they're a Doepfer partner, and carry a wide selection. Not super clued in on places in BC to find modular stuff, but have had some success looking on reverb and filtering to sellers in Canada. I think a nifty case is probably the easiest, lowest cost way to get a little rack together, once you start looking at the cost of power supplies. It is on the small side though.
I also saw some wood crate storage bins at Canadian tire that look like they might be able to hold 6U of maybe 84hp, maybe a bit wider? for about $50 yesterday.

Yeah I've seen the Niftycases browsing Cicada and Nightlife. I just worry they're too shallow for some of the video stuff I'd want to put in there. I'll double check the modulargrid I had going but I think some Syntonie modules are like over 60 mm deep.

ooh, yeah, I'm not sure exactly how deep they are, but I had to do a bit of tetrising to make sure the cards on 2hp modules didn't land on where the power connector sits. They just barely fit in a nifty case.
