School uniforms are necessary for when I see children in a WH Smiths at lunchtime so I can report them to their schools in case they look at me funny.

My school had a uniform and a dress code. The uniform was a navy sweater with the school badge and a white polo with a navy stripe on the collar, both purchased direct from the school office. The dress code was “dark top, dark trousers, no visible branding”, so it wasn’t very much effort at all to pick out a few outfits that fit the bill for the code while letting you wear what you want. There was a fad for school uniforms among the girls when I was in fourth year and my school had to order ties in to meet the fashion demand because nobody had worn one for a decade!

Honestly the only argument I would entertain is trying to stop kids being made fun of for not being able to afford fancy clothes. But I suspect that would be better achived by schools giving a poo poo about kids being twats in general which they didn't when I was at school.

And also uniforms really don't do that, otherwise the least classist schools in the country would be the old money public schools with formal dress codes, and I'm fairly sure that is not the case. Even (especially?) in full tie and blazer and your-trousers-must-be-this-shade-of-charcoal schools rich kids will just use dress shoes or watches or items of jewellery that the staff wouldn't dare complain about like gold crucifixes to show off. Or just their name, proper old school classism.

Man I remember so many arguments about school uniform as a kid and "not the right shade of navy" Seems so weird and petty in retrospect. My sister's school seemed to have a set number of things that they had to have banned. The girls campaigned for ages to be able to wear black tights and it finally got allowed, then next week the school banned black socks for girls.

Theres a school round the corner from me and the blazer has this stupid stripe on the lapel which stops anyone from buying it from George or Matalan.

My school uniform was bottle green and I once got my hair scrunchie confiscated because it was green with black polka dots. I'm willing to bet that the scrunchie didn't interfere with anyone's learning, but me not being able to tie my long hair back during science lessons did. Some parent friends of mine were complaining last year that their kids were only allowed school branded water bottles in class, which cost £5 each.

That's the uniform of the all girls school here. The yellow shirt is only sold by one shop in the whole town. No one sells female shirts of that exact colour. The school tried kicking up stink of wrong shades of yellow when ordering things online became popular, but no one gave a poo poo. There's a mint green shirt and dark navy uniform of a school here too. Fugly as hell.

My school changed uniform soon after I started. They replaced the old black woolen v-neck jumpers with black sweatshirts. There was a grace period during which either uniform could be worn, but the poorer kids who were using hand-me-downs started getting letters after a while. Fortunately, none of the uniform items were particularly expensive (no blazers or similar poo poo), and being black avoided arguments over exactly which shades were permitted. The simplest option would probably be to standardise school uniform nationally. Make it available at pretty much every supermarket and online retailer. For customisation, let schools sell some kind of sew-on badge or logo, with a requirement that it be supplied at cost. If you absolutely need some variation, authorise a short menu of colour schemes schools can choose from. Actually, I hate children, so make it lime green with orange polka-dots.

smellmycheese posted:I mean you definitely don’t have to hand it to Keith but here we see even the most pathetic, milquetoast promise to maybe make school jumpers less expensive branded as “woke insurgency” That's why you definitely don't have to hand it to Keith - if kowtowing to the tabloids and giving endless sloppies to capital got you an easier ride as Labour leader then it would at least be a tactic with some sort of justification. Not very good ones, but some. But. It. Never. Works. As here, even suggesting a zero-cost, zero-change policy to reduce uniform costs to families is a 'woke insurgency'. And it doesn't appeal to anyone in the 'real world' either. You might as well go big and say that you're going to get rid of uniforms for kids altogether. Or introduce standardised jumpsuits with red neckerchiefs or something. The Daily Mail will still have fits, the Telegraph will still call you a nation-hating communist and a Guardian columnist will write 800 words about how wearing their school tie with a larger-than-regulation knot was their first act of anti-establishment anarchism that made them the ardent socialist they are to this day.

The school I teach at has a uniform that involves a variety of items that are specific to the school including the summer socks. That lead to some messages being passed down on high about how we need to have a conversation with our forms about how too many are wearing the wrong socks and instead of being able to wear almost some cheap Primark socks, they have to wear those ones (or the regular long ones / tights) if they didn't want a detention. I really need to get around to talking to the deputy head about why that is such an important thing. Tomorrow's inset day seems like a good way to start the school year by asking!
